I think the M1 chip is a double edged sword. Apple made it too good. The M1 pro and M1 Max MacBooks are so good that MKBHD didn’t even upgrade.

When Apple was debating moving to Apple silicon I doubt it realized that its biggest competition would be older Apple silicon machines! I mean there’s not anything all that compelling about m2 (pro,max)and m3 (pro,max)to justify the significant additional costs over m1. Which is why I believe Apple should’ve considered a design that allowed interested users to upgrade their logic boards. Keep the same screen, batteries, speakers, keyboard, storage, and swap out the logic board. I believe that would’ve driven revenue. But oh well.
@andyH_England

Yes, Apple realised that and over M2 & M3, they have corrected their mistake by making their PC ecosystem more relative to the old school of base M3, mid-M3 Pro and the powerhouse M3 Max. That has meant a few changes and complaints, but the new business model was the right way, though it needed some fixing (return of two NAND 256GB). They wanted to impress with the M1, but it has been a Catch-22; too good, as you say!

I actually discovered something very interesting with my and my friend's devices. Basically any laptop we bought, generally 2000$+ (mine cost 2000$) hasn't slowed down in past couple of years. I am a power user who has need for 64 gb ram as i use photoshop, premiere pro, illustrator , then games maybe and all that at almost same time. So I am a power user and such and i have noticed my 5-6 year old windows laptop too hasnt slowed down much. Its comforting to know that the times where a device would have been obsolete in like 3-4 years are long gone. and yeah you're correct, people who do 3d modeling, gaming,engineering etc prefer windows (especially just desktops or chonky laptops)
@zeighy
@zeighy 2 месяца назад
This is largely attributing to having SSDs being standard now instead of the slow clunky spinning hard drives. Those drives have a relatively limited life due to wear of spinning mechanical parts.... Only for about 2-3 years before you start noticing a slowdown. At about 5 years, it's pretty much toast and you risk loosing data. I think around 2020 was when most laptops, medium to high end, have started to ship with just SSDs. Only higher end for anything since 2018. So, yeah... Honestly SSDs are basically improving computing experiences across the board.
@shivanshshivi811
@shivanshshivi811 2 месяца назад
@@zeighy yes, SSD's are a good reason. But also that there exactly hasn't been much groundbreaking innovation in the market. A laptop that came out 10 years ago, could also have 8-16gb of ram, and a laptop that comes out now also has 8-16 gb of ram. Processor has gotten fast yes, but Windows hasn't gotten much intensive. Most people with older devices still use windows 7 and 10. And windows 10 isn't outdated for most people. And yes, SSD's.

So on the topic of what people do with their MacBook's. I am a 3d artist professionally, and while I did have a custom system I built with a 4090 for rendering. And that was insanely fast for rendering for sure. But I had to sell my desktop due to a pretty massive life event. But after that I still had a base M1 MacBook Air I was using as a around the house internet browsing machine. And I was forced to try and use it for my 3d modeling and rendering work. And while it cannot compete with the 4090 I had, it genuinely surprised me. It has faster timeline animation playback than my desktop. And while the rendering was no where near as close to my 4090 it was serviceable. So tempting expectations is a must. But once you do you realise just how good it was. Well skip forward a little bit and now I bought a base 14" M3 Pro MacBook Pro, and wow it handles waay more than I would have ever thought. Couple that with that battery life and everything else, I think I am going to be on Mac for a while. Do I miss my massive steam library for the off chance I would actually play a game? Sure. But there are Steam Decks and such for that.

This is your best review to date. I'm a new convert to MacOS after 40 years of DOS/Windows. I stumbled on to a M1 Max 14" (32gb/24c/2tb) on eBay with renewable AppleCare+, and it is the BEST laptop I've owned since the original Toshiba T1100 Plus in the mid 80's (because it was the first full feature DOS laptop). Above all, you are absolutely right about upgrades, and the comparison to a zero time export only saving you 20 minutes per day over this M1 Max. For an "office drone" like myself (productivity without gaming/video processing), I've never felt I'd keep a device for "years" but this one likely outlast my need for a laptop.

My Mid-2010 MacBook pro lasted me for about 10 years, with 2 battery replacements. I got the 16" 2019 MacBook Pro, and continued to use the 2010 model as a second screen for a bit, but my iPad Air 4 has replaced it in that role now. These days for most people, it is going to be like buying a new washing machine. You get one when the old one breaks down. As for what could come in the future, it is mostly going to be new AI features that need a faster neural engine. Subject Lift and Centre Stage for example are AI features. If there was something in a future version of Final Cut that made it quicker for you to select the bits of the video that don't make it here; and that required a faster neural engine; that could maybe significantly reduce your editing time, and make it worthwhile for you to upgrade.

My 14 inch M1 Pro MacBook will be about 2 years old this summer, and I have zero inclination to upgrade. Not only does it have way more power than I can realistically use (not a video content creator, but I do occasionally run some games in a Windows VM with Parallels), but it also still feels brand new to me. There's not a blemish on it, and the battery health is still at 99%. It'll be years before I need to even replace the battery, let alone upgrade.

@@noldaems760 In my case I just use it. Granted most of my workflow isn't very performance intensive, so it doesn't use a ton of power and doesn't drain the battery quickly. My 14" M1 Pro has replaced my PC for all tasks except gaming, and is an amazing piece of kit, especially for the cost £1,450 new in 2022. I will be holding onto it for a long time. I do find it heavy compared to my 2019 HP Envy laptop I had before and a lot more cumbersome to carry around the house etc so I also now have a 2017 MacBook 12" that I use for web browsing, document writing and watching videos on the go. If Apple put the premium displays into the MacBook Air, that would be worth the trade off for a lighter laptop.

I bought the exact MacBook Pro you have at release (just with 2TB storage) and I’m pretty sure it’s gonna go the same way as my 2018 12.9-inch iPad Pro in terms of just keeping it for years and years because of how well it’s aging. The one downside of it 2.5 years later is I have quite a few cycles on the battery and it doesn’t last as near as long (understandably), but even that is nowhere near as bad as the intel days with the 15-inch 2019 MBP battery life 😂

M1 Macbook Pro’s was a statement by Apple why they’re still the best at what they do. Apple didn’t hold back and created the best laptop ever. Many professionals switched instantly to this M1 chip. Once these laptops are written off in the accounting books, they’ll purchase new ones. Mostly that’s every 4 years.

I had the worst issue with web pages using too much memory on a 16GB M1 Pro. Having to repeatedly input my login credentials while doing research because the webpage just continued increasing RAM usage until the page was forced to close and reopen while I was researching effectively was hardening my vibes. I upgraded and have never reencountered it. Also, when the effort is put into porting a game for it, they run like a dream. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Death Stranding run well in low-power mode on an M3 Max, which I could never imagine happening on a Windows gaming laptop.

I have an M2 Mac, very much spec'd out. And despite how good the M3 Macs are and how much I love raytracing, it is far from a reason for me to upgrade. Plus, when you have 96 GB of RAM and 12 cores, it's much harder to see issues years down the line. This is how you keep people into the Apple ecosystem, design a device that is so good that people may just buy a new one when they don't even need it because their older laptop is predicted to last 20+ years.

I think the biggest upgrade we could see for the MacBook is Face ID because I'm not exactly sure what else it really needs, like yes new chips will come but the big jump from intel to apple silicon isn't really going to happen again; at least for a good while. Hot swappable batteries and upgradable storage would be nice but not exactly something I'd expect from current day apple. At this point it seems more likely that for the average consumer the system will lose software support before they actually need to upgrade. Also note that after 7 years of a product no longer being on sale(directly from apple) repair technicians can have greater difficulty sourcing parts from apple and after 9 years it becomes basically impossible with I think escalations to higher management being required to even get the part and the request can be denied for any reason including they don't want to provide the part. From what I understand after 7 years all manufacturing of replacement parts is ended and its based on the remaining supplies so if you need a logic board replaced but they don't have the 512gb logic board they may give you a 1TB logic board instead but they won't give you a 256GB logic board as from what I've learned it can't be a downgrade for the customer(based on the serial number specs, if you got a 1TB board for your 512gb model and you need another logic board replaced you could get a 512gb board if one is found) and if they've run out of the part like say the I/O board your repair may be denied unless required by an applicable law in which case they either need to manufacture a new part or find a working part. Also to my understanding after 9 years the warehouse space is cleared out to make room for more parts so Apple literally does not have the parts to supply to technicians anymore except maybe in extremely limited quantities for extreme outlier cases or for their internal engineers to be able to reference the manufactured part if needs be.

I think they're definitely going to make the new MacBook's thinner with M4 & an OLED screen. They'll probably trim down the size of the battery but it'll still have the same rated battery life as the M1 because of the efficiency of M4. It's the only direction I see them going, even though I would prefer them just keep the same form factor and improve the battery life even more.

I've been using an M1 Macbook Air for 3 years during university and no, my usage hasn't been just internet browsing and reading emails, quite the opposite. I study visual and product design, so the range of use is from graphic design content to 3d modelling in Rhinoceros and it did not give me any real problem. I chose to buy the 16gb of ram version and thank god I made that decision, one of my classmates bought the base M1 Macbook Pro 13 and now has big problems because of the lack of that extra ram. Apart from that the only reason I could have to upgrade wouldn't be a real upgrade, because i'd just buy a 14" base Macbook Pro with tha M1 Pro to have a boost in performance for 3D modelling anything other than that would be useless for me since I have a built PC for harder work like 3D Renderings. AND even with that "upgrade" I would have to turn down one real good pro of the Air, and it's the portability.

I bought the M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 at launch and still love it. I would have liked a USB-A port but I'm almost completely migrated to USBC and I just need to replace one more device and then it's not an issue. The newer MacBook Pros have somewhat more efficiency but, at this point, battery is probably more dependent on display brightness. What would get me to upgrade is a 17.3 inch 4k display as my setup works better with 4k than the funny resolution that Apple uses. I think that I could use a 17.3 inch Air as well as I actually don't need the CPU/GPU in the MacBook Pro. Oh - they could probably get a bunch of people to upgrade by getting rid of the notch.

In December 2023 I upgraded from a M1 13in mbp to a 16in m2 pro with 1tb. The m1 Mac was fine for my needs but 8gb ram weren’t enough since I‘m making music and doing a lot of real time audio stuff and because I’ve improved my production a lot since i got the m1 in 2021. the upgrade was definitely worth it. But if I had the M1 Pro 16in I probably wouldn’t have upgraded. And i could have gotten the m3 pro instead of the m2 pro but 1st it was cheaper and 2nd has worse multicore performance because a lot of DAWs can’t fully utilize all cores. The performance cores yes but not the efficiency cores and since the m3 has 50/50 of those i felt like I was at a loss and went for the m2. I‘m very happy with it and it basically handles everything that I throw at it. Even playing some games via whisky is great :)
