Yes,a few of my mango 🥭 plants which I grew from seed about 2 1/2 years ago are pushing out panicles or shoots. Mine survive uncovered even when we're getting light frosts overnight since the temperature has been dropping down to 4°C inland from Newcastle in New South Wales (I am closer to Maitland) although there's been reports that the temperature has dropped down to 2°C as well !
Hi Russell Booth You doing well with mango seedlings 👍 Amazing. My big trees but always die back 🥹 We get similar temperature. Good luck with all your trees . Thanks so much for watching 🙏
Beautiful and healthy looking trees, I’m in South Africa and my mangoes started flowering about two weeks ago as well. It’s kind of strange even though I’m in a frost free area, they usually flower around spring time which is September
Hi there 👋 Thank you for watching 🙏 It’s first time this year they flowers early . You are right normally they flower around September. Big deferent, you too. Amazing. Hello everyone from Australia 🇦🇺👋
The flowers are induced by cold weather Alyssa. In North Queensland in the dry tropics near Bowen where commercial crops of KP are grown, it’s the lower temperatures that provide a check to the growth then initiating flowering. When you see leaves and flowers on a panicle, I believe that’s due to a combination of variable temperatures. Warm weather then cold. The tree doesn’t know whether to grow or flower! I would leave the flower panicles on as it provides protection for the underlying growth in case of frost or very low temps. Be worthwhile having a min max thermometer in each enclosure. Temps should reach 20C in the outer one on sunny days if it is airtight though it is a much larger to warm up. Be very surprised if wasn’t the case in the green igloo. All depends how long the sun is out too. All of the mangoes are looking so healthy. Removing the wind chill will definitely help them survive winter without dieback. The outside mangoes in plastic enclosures will lap up the winter sun. Raising the inside temperature by 5C will help no end for protection. Be like South Queensland where it will be 20C during the day and 5C to 10C at night. It’s not ideal having growth in winter but shows it’s appreciating the warmth. Trees in dormancy remain more resistant to cold. Should be proud of successes Alyssa. Keep up the great work.
