My Medical Rural Placement in Benalla, Its Health and Tourism - Victoria, Australia.

During the second year of my MBBS degree, I had to complete my 1-month placement in a rural town and had the choice to pick either mid-year or at the end of the year. I decided to go midyear to a small quaint city called Benalla in Victoria.
I decided to record and make a little video of what it felt like to go to Benalla City and speak about my placement, its health and what to do as a tourist.
All in all, I had a really good time, became more independent and confident on how I practised medicine, and was happy to have seen a little snippet of what Victoria had to offer.

This was super helpful, as well as your notes. We are a young family looking to move to the area and I'm a midwife. Any other feedback on the hospital (e.g. how busy, acuity, etc), and any specific tips for moving here (e.g. making friends in the community, how easy would it be to become part of the community, is it clicky)? Thank you for this video :)

Hi Kelly thanks for your comment :) it is a bit hard for me to tell if it is clicky as I was there only for 1-month, but I was always welcomed by locals as well as staff. Tough to say about the hospital. The urgent care was mostly calm and an easy place to learn, I am not too sure how busy the midwives were on their ward. The theatre is popular and busy, and if I remember correctly the acute ward was almost full of patients (mainly it was elderly patients). I would suggest being active in the community, meeting people or going to the town social events would be a good start :) (there might be clubs like a cycling club if you are into cycling). I was with a young doctor who wanted to settle as he really enjoyed the area.

Hope you enjoyed Melbourne. How come the degree does have longer placements compared to other degrees?

As in it is 6 years compared to usually 5 year

Hi Ash, I only stayed about 7 hours in Melbourne as it was a transition but looked like a cool city! James Cook medical school is an undergrad Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, hence only 6 years in total compared to other post-grad medical schools, which are 4 years. Still, you have to have a previous 3-4 year degree as an undergrad (at least in Australia). JCU does put a lot of effort into students getting exposed to placements (by the end of 3 years there are 4 placements in total + our clinical year where year 4-6 is entirely at the hospital).

You are indeed correct, although I tricked you as I learnt English in SA but I am French.

@@andreasastier Oh haha. That's okay. I was born in SA but grew up in Australia and I still have a bit of an accent just because of my family. Thanks so much for your video, I head to Benalla for my nursing placement Sunday and it was just what I was looking for to get some more insight. All the best with the rest of your studies.

@@misspst9585 oh that's awesome! I had so much fun and grew a lot more confident on doing the basics right. On weekends the town offers many things to do, which is awesome.
