The way you used Youlean is really clever! I had never thought to use loudness to mix and find levels, only to master! It's also really nice that you took the time to make notes for differences in various genres, as well as including that these are never hard and fast rules but rather suggestions that can be adjusted depending on the song - well done Alice! There are so many takeaways in this video, I had to pause so many times. Making room for bands, setting levels, and it's cool to just watch how you personally approach the mixes--I wouldn't have caught the hi-hats taking over the mix at the end, but when you made the adjustment, it added so much drive to the feeling

Cool to hear that. Many engineers I know also use very similar methods to get the mix to a good balance and then make all the extras afterwards. This was more or less my try to consolidation of all the things I have learnt and I use. ✌️

I watched this video two days ago I doubted it would work as i don't a genre thats on the chart but it is similar to deeo house. Yesterday i tried this on one song and it made it song so professional that i couldn't believe that it was a dong i produced. I was smiling for hours realizing how powerful this is anyway i mixed 2 more songs after that. This is a precious video, thanks. there is no certain db points of course but it takes you to really good point and you can adjust some db's by ear. Nobody willing to teach some real mixing tips but you!

Just wanted to say I love your content! There’s no wasted time, just loads of info. I have hearing difficulties and wear hearing aids. I’m not wearing them right now and could still hear the difference between the 2 mixes at the start 😂 I’m not sure how others couldn’t hear the difference!

Love the flowchart! It kindof replaces the "mixing magic" with a tangible approach. I have some sort of similar workflow, but it is in my head only (no flow chart :)) and it starts with a kickdrum at -12 dB. And after that I mix all the other parts in, relative to that kick. As I usually mix psy-trance and uplifting trance, the relationship between the kick and the sub/mid bass is very important. I use different levels as a rule of thumb than you show here, but as you say, many things are depending on genre and style. You have a new follower in me. Thanks for the awesome vid.

I appreciate that you do more than just say "just raise or lower this until it sounds right." As a novice, I need to know what sounds right! Just because I can tell the difference between a pro and amateur track doesn't mean I know how many db should generally be between kicks and hats, for example.

A nicely done video and a clear tutorial and explanation of the process. I appreciate the educative skills, including eloquence. I wish you a lot of lovely moments with music. :) PS. I've been composing hardcore in the late 90's, early 2000's, no DAW, just an advanced tracker. @Alice-Efe I bought your mixing and your mastering courses and I enjoyed them very much. I learned a LOT and I think you are a great teacher Alice. I learn something new every day or I have some huge relevation and I want to incorporate that into my current projects to make them better sounding. But this results keeping them in a development hell. When I go through the past versions there are some obvious bad ones but I can still find good things in the earlier versions. How do you know when is the right time you should stop tweaking the mix or the master?

You reference, with a track in your genere, metric AB from Plugin Works is really helpful, because you can compare Stereo field, and have several tracks to compare to. Use the same bpm and key on the reference track, makes it easier.

I think Marcus has a great point. Reference tracks are good way to compare if it is enough. And also remember the pareto principle. When you feel like the changes you make are really small and doesnt add much, it is a sign that you should consider stopping.

Kick bass ref also depends on genre I feel. In trance I usually mix the kick to -12 db and the sub -15db ish

Where do you find that snares and mid-frequency transient heavy content should work into this flow? I would guess between lows and highs. Any pro-tips for gluing snare with the kick and bass groove in that case?

It really depends a little bit genre. This was a bit more house & techno oriented but I am sure you can update the reference values and it can work on other genres as well.

Exactly! The idea of this method is getting your mix 80% ready by only using EQ and faders. Then last 20% is just fine tuning things around depending on your taste.

This is a great video! Really good guide on how to get a more balanced mix. Personally, I find that doing the fader adjustment phases here is EVEN STRONGER when doing it in MONO. Get that balance in mono, and I promise the switch back to stereo is magical!

Some of the drum samples I use are sitting at -20db or more. Should I turn them down in simpler then add more volume on the channel mixer volume to bring them back up to -6?

I tried to set up the Loudness meter on my kick Chanel and the fader dont Effekt the loudness in the plugin. Can somebody explain how to Show this waveform in the Plugin? Does it only work on Groups?
