My mobile mechanic tool set up

This is an overly wordy showing of what I use to do nearly every job. I don't show the torches and slide hammers and other tools that I own. Just the daily carry stuff. This basic set does 98% of every job every time no matter what and where.

I can tell you I ran my mobile service out of the back of my 2001 GMC Jimmy for many years with way more weight and never had issues with my shocks. But then again it wasn't a fancy BMW 😂

@ykmalachi

I could have them on little racks..... but then I'd need a deeper drawer. Which isn't an option given my space. So I accept the chaos. I have about 2-3 of each size also which adds to to mess. I could put in a divider to get the Metric separate.....but it isn't a bother to me.
@ykmalachi

Mine is screwed down. My vehicle has a thick wooden tray that is bolted down and I have no fear of it moving in any way. Even if it did, it would need to break the brackets that the back seat has and go through the seat itself to get into the passenger area. 99% of the time I am the only person riding around. It is far safer than a guy with tools on the floor of his Econoline or Chevy Express style work van. My biggest bit of advise is to answer your phone no matter what. It is a job. Treat it as such and even though you don't want to work, get up and make the money. I have business card and hand them out now and then but they don't really get me money. Word of mouth is the only way I get new customers. Yes the Craigslist ad helped for a year or so..... but after that I can coast easily on referrals and repeat customers.

I watched maybe 20 toolbox tours and this is the first one where I can see the real "working" tools. I mean how your tools can be that fancy, flashy and in perfect order when you use them all day long doing dirty work? When I got my first small tool kit they became ugly on a first day after removing alternator and power steering pump.

Not to sound like a prick but, it's called giving a shit about your tools. When you have over 10's of thousands of dollars in tools. You take care of them, I spray my tools with ether so they don't like nasty. And i'm a HET so they get dirty fast, and if the customer is watching it just looks way more proffesional. Ether is better than brake clean because for whatever reason it doesn't dry rubber and plastic out like brake clean does. Just my 2 cents

Don't listen to the haters. They're commenting from behind the keyboard while in real life you're scratching out a living as your own boss, not having to take orders or deal with the politics of some corporate shop. Nice set-up, especially because it works to your satisfaction, and when it doesn't, you upgrade and improve. I own a car hauling business and there's nothing like working for yourself. When people ask me if money is the best part of owning your own business, I tell them: "no, peace of mind is!"

nick elias I like the idea of a trailer but all too often your in apartments with minimal parking. Towing a trailer gets to be tedious after a short while. especially in traffic. I'd love the volume of tools I could bring and carry though. in the last 10 years of doing this, I've only once or twice had someone want a tire mounted by me.

ykmalachi yeah true. i hate to do it but im going to turn down people who live in apartments and crowded city places if tje lanldlord does not allow me to park their. i have a repair release form for people to sign stating that they understand their are risks invovlved and damage to property or personal injury may occur and i am allowed to work on their property. my target customer base is going to be people who live in suburban house tracks where I can park on the street and use their driveway. i am going to promote changing tires and selling them as well as tpms sensors. i wont be as cheap as walmart or costco with tires but theyll have the comfort of sitting in their hous while i change their tires. i want to avoid bottom feeders who want everything free so im going to have alittle higher prices.
@ykmalachi
@ykmalachi 7 лет назад
You can try. I've preferred that market but found I still end up in lower income locations pretty frequent. I never know what my next job will be. I do see a slow trend of higher income people and millenials wanting the convenience of a service that caters to them. However most of them are not in the new car market and culturally don't plan to buy new cars. I do not turn down any jobs that I can do because they are broke. They will find the money to fix their cars. This is a growing area of service and a lot of money being thrown around. I clear around 50k and work around 25 hours a week. I could easily double that. Tax free. No receipts, no forms to sign or other disclaimers. I also accept that I work at my own risk. I do tell folks in apartments that if management shows up I have to leave. No apartments allow (on paper) working on cars. They all have a clause stating that you cannot. As the saying goes....it's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

Finally someone else who goes out of the way for 6 points ! haha I noticed you don’t have any 6 point wrenches though? Having both, the only time I use a 12 point wrench now is to hammer on to a rounded off bolt. You should check out the tire plug kits. Get the “heavy duty” ones with metal handles and some rubber cement. Should cost you around $30 and will pay for itself after two or so jobs. They will fix any nail/screw type puncture and is a 5 minute job, don’t forget to carry an air compressor if you are going to do it.

I don’t think I will last in the shop. Just makes for a long day. Thinking about becoming self employed with focus on hyd hose R&R. I guess I never thought about how different shop maintenance is. For starters, walking on concrete is horrible compared to rock sand and grass. Really tuff on your feet . Getting old I guess. I have not been involved with the automotive biz ever. So that’s out. You should get your self a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel truck with a 11' service body bed. Then you would have room and not just throw all your wenches in the draw

Question for you sir , I’ve been working on cars my whole life . I’m very confident with the work I do , I’ve been a hoist technician for most of my working career but I’m thinking of switching paths and want to be a mobile mechanic.... my question is , is I’m not ticketed . Does it matter ??? Do you get a lot of people asking for your credentials??
@ykmalachi
@ykmalachi 5 лет назад
I've had about 5 people ever want to know. I've maybe lost 1-2 jobs due to that. Others were due to them buying a rebuilt engine or transmission that required shop credentials for honoring warranty. Otherwise it isn't a factor. I tell them honestly that I used to have some of the ASE certs years ago but let them lapse as they did not effect my income and only cost money. I say this next part, not to belittle the guys with them....... but the ability to pass a test on a computer screen is not reflective of the ability to do repair.

Cool video. One thing you could think about upgrading is your 3/8 universal. Ive had a few cheap ones, 3 times on an impact and theyre looser than a grandmas vagina. Snap-on ones are like $50 a pop which is a lot for a tiny hunk of metal, but its worth it. Ive used mine for about a year now, almost always on an impact and its still good and stiff. Just my 2 cents. Also, is there any particular reason you work out of an X5 or is it just what you had starting out?
@ykmalachi

I started out with a 1992 GEO Storm.... I've used my full size 1967 pick-up with tool boxes and it works great, I just preferred this as it has AC. It has a V8 in case I need to tow, it is "classy" enough to go into any neighborhood or location and not get funny looks. Plus is was virtually free. I could go and get a van or other truck if I wanted, but I need to pick up my kid from time to time. She is only 5. Need a back seat. I do need to upgrade the other universals. Recently spent $50 on a nice pinless style from Craftsman in my 1/2 drive. It is great but has a huge profile.

Do you have insurance ? Are you full time or part time ? And do you have to pay taxes on the work you do ?
@ykmalachi
@ykmalachi 7 лет назад
I am full time. As all my work is word of mouth with no receipts I don't really sweat taxes. I've never done the LLC thing so don't worry about insurance. I mean if I burnt a car down or something I'd buy the person a replacement. I am honorable like that. However, worst risk you face is spilled gas in on an asphalt parking lot. Thus "damaging" property.

They would need a complaint to get that ball rolling. There is not laws requiring licensing here. They would need proof of what I actually made. Checks and credit card payments each year only amount to a small number each year. For the amount of time it would take and hassle to pursue me for small change, there is no real concern on my part. There is also an aspect of American culture I am exploiting doing this that many Americans like....A certain folk hero to the people by sticking it to the man. Fringe of the law.
@jmahtab

Actually the biggest risk you face is a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit. If one of your customers were involved in an accident even if they were at fault first thing they'd blame would be mechanical failure. Right or wrong it's the world we live in. It happened to a co-worker of mine. He did a rear brake job, lady hit a pedestrian because she was most likely distracted. Her defense was that the brakes didn't work. Cost him a ton of money in legal fees. Liability insurance is expensive so I understand why you don't carry it.

Which size aluminum floor jack did you get from HF? I want to use the $59 coupon (you can't use a 20% for floor jacks at HF, have to use a tool-specific, "special" coupon) for the 1.5 ton aluminum jack. My KIA is only 3200lbs, maybe 3300 so I know the 1.5 is enough. Just curious, which size did you get for all the daily work you do? I like to keep a floor jack (wheeljack?) in my trunk, so I figured aluminum would be easier to lift and use. Thanks in advance. I know I've asked questions in several of your videos, so triple-thanks.
@ykmalachi
@ykmalachi 6 лет назад
mrfrankcastle083 I bought the bigger 3 ton size. The lifting capacity of the jack isn't as important as the foot print. I wanted the widest jack possible. I often have to jack a car on soft ground or not level ground. The wider the jack (and longer) the more stable and safe it is. It also cannot sink into the mud as easy. This jack is rather heavy, but a 3 ton steel jack weighs much more. This one weighs about the same as the steel 2 ton jack.
