After more than a few international moves, I've come up with a moving abroad checklist that works for me and my needs to help make the transition into a new life abroad just that little bit easier. Living abroad come with many challenges, so why not try to remove some of them and help things to go more smoothly? In my most recent international move I used all of what I talked about in this episode and more to help make my life that little bit easier.... not to say there weren't a few bumps in the road or that everything was perfect. However, living abroad will be a life-changing experience that you want to make sure you can enjoy as much as possible. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, I'll be sharing part of my checklist for moving abroad to live in another country as well as share with you all where I have moved.
1:31 - Part 1: Making sure you understand everything and that you are understood as well
3:19 - Part 2: Can you actually stay?
5:36 - Part 3: What you take and how you take it
12:43 - Part 4: Connection
19:06 - Part 5: Transportation
The app I mentioned in this episode where you can buy an ESIM online is called Airalo and the referral code to save $3 is RAFAEL837 and here's the referral link I mentioned ref.airalo.com/dhht

WOW WOW WOW, FUN FUN FUN, I had No idea that you are so cute and handsome, my gosh Rafi, your entire personality has changed, like you came out of a shell, you speak more decisively, more targeted, so refreshing, not at all like your usual skirting around or skimming an issue like you are afraid to say anything about it. Oh WOW, you've taken off in your rocket and flying high and happy, thanks for taking us along for the ride, this is going to be a BLAST!

Wow, Portugal! I’ve always been intrigued about that country. Look forward to hearing comparisons between Italy and Portugal like healthcare. Talk about that when you get a chance. Best wishes to you and your new home!

We guessed Portugal based on some things you mentioned in previous videos. So glad that your move was successful and that you and your family are well. Best of luck in your new home and we are looking forward to hearing more about it. And, yes, we would definitely be interested in seeing more content on moving to another country, what you've learned and experienced and your pointers for a smooth transition. Alla prossima, Buon Natale a te e tu familia. Buona fortuna! 🎄🍾

Congratulations on a successful relocation. I was just searching apartments online in Braga when I opened your video. My request would be an episode on the best ways to search apartments in that area. I know you are going to love your new home. Have a lovely holiday season and best wishes also to your family, and a very prosperous 2022 to you!

Love Portugal! I’ve all over it from sea to cork farms and obviously wineries. Belém ,Évora, Coimbra and Porto being some of my favorites. They are struggling financially with one of the highest rates of unemployed young folk. I have friends there that live near the Galician border and lament that many young people are fleeing the country to find work. One of the highest retired populations and they need the taxes to fuel the pensions, healthcare etc. Hopefully they will turn things around by making things easier for entrepreneurs etc and bring back the young. Spain is in the same boat but not as bad since they are bigger with more industries. LOVE ❤️ Portugal!! Boa viagem Rafael!

I just received a quote a few weeks ago for shipping a small one room unit from California to Honolulu, Hawaii and it was over FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. However shipping my car is only roughly $1500. So for my move, it’s more cost effective for me to just sell everything and mail a few odds and ends via USPS. (Because even if I spend $500 in shipping items via USPS it’s definitely cheaper than the $5000 unit)

YEEEES…I knew it! Portugal! It only made sense…EU citizenship, Brazilian background, “lower” taxes, and digital nomad (sorry) friendly gov’t! Your out-of-focus scenes w/the colcada (I think they’re called) and overhead lights were a dead giveaway..for me. 😜 Well done and parabens! I’m of Italian descent, live in SF Bay Area, have US & Italian passports (whohoo), love and always will love Italy 🇮🇹, love my family there…but you know…there are few personal family issues that may make Italy difficult for us. So, yeah, we visited PT from Braga to Algarve in late Oct/mid Nov 2021 to check out PT. We visited Braga for only a day (easy trip from Porto). While highly rated, I don’t feel we got a good sense of the city-like Coimbra for that matter. So my wish list of future videos (totally selfish perspective here 😁) are: ANY comparison you can make IT vs PT would be greatly appreciated, logistics of “arriving” in PT (as touched upon) for a EU citizen would be a big thumbs up as most YT videos are focused on D7 visa, anything about Braga would be VERY helpful (especially w/the winter weather upon us), in particular why Braga vs. Porto vs. Lisbon vs. Tomar vs Algarve. What lead you to that decision? I’ve heard a lot about “nice” people so as time goes on would like your thoughts. And…what is there to do there? We hope to relocate/retire in about 2 years (realistically) and still have to decide where to land in PT would be greatly appreciated as you bring a perspective that I’ll absolutely appreciate! BTW-you didn’t have to cram in that panettone in your suitcase 😂, we saw them in the supermarkets way back in late Oct…much to our surprise! Who knew? Auguri, parabens, and all the best to you Rafael-our man in PT! 👍🏻

Ha Ha. I guessed right. I remembered that you said your family wanted to move someplace where it was easier for them with the language and you mentioned several times about your ethnic background in the past so I thought perhaps Spain or Portugal. Well good luck. You really should show us more of Portugal. I do watch other shows about Portugal but I doubt that you are going to be renovating a farm so no competition there. Really good luck. @@RafaelDiFuria To be hones throw everything you've got in your videos, we will be watching every single one, and if questions will arise, we will comment for sure with requests. We listened to your advice from an old video and did applied the long stay to Italy this summer in Florence for a month. Not that convinced yet so pass, we actually loved Verona more, but 5 years ago we tried for a brief time Tarragona in Spain, and we loved it, but decided in the end to move to Vienna. We got bored of this place so we are on the lookout for a hot country. Now we will try again for these two countries and if they don't win, Italy it is. All the best Rafael. Stay safe there.

My husband's pure Portuguese - his grandparents came on a boat to the U.S. Northeast so technically he can be a citizen of Portugal. My question (it'll never happen): If my husband and I moved to Portugal and he became a citizen, will I be able to become a citizen by marriage? If he passes on (heaven forbid!) would I have to leave the country? Would I be able to stay in any of the other Schengen countries? Congratulations on a wonderful move. I was thinking you'd be in Spain but Portugal is definitely one place I want to visit - if I can ever pull myself away from traveling to Italy - it's so hard! Happy Holidays to you and your family. I know you'll take great care of them. Give them my fondest Aloha. Boa noite!

@Rafael , how is the working situation there, I am living in italy currently near Brescia i am 25 years old, I have a job but the work situation is not good in italy, low wages, work just as hard as in the USA and it seems like most businesses jobs have a leveled salary range with very minimal opertunity to change or grow. ( it still seems like a live to work , not a work to live mentality over here. Sorry to be blunt, not exactly dolce vita I expected ). If I may ask what did you do to support yourself during your time in italy ? Thanks for the support, Marco Gaetano
