My work/company car is a 2017 MQ Triton with 45,000kms and it's covered in rust just like yours, underneath and engine bay. No water crossings but lives in a very coastal area and never gets washed. I thought these seem to rust quickly so when I bought my own brand new MR I sprayed underneath with Lanotec Steel Seal from day 2 and have given it a good rinse underneath every now and then. 12 months later still looks perfect. Tritons are built to a price so I don't expect too much in any area including rust proofing, plus my old Prado was an absolute shocker for rust underneath so not just a Triton issue. Good reminder for me to reapply the Steel Seal though so thanks for the Vid!

Hi JB, does the Lanotec eventually dry or does it stay sticky?
@86jesseb
@86jesseb 2 года назад
@@bugsy1254 it does dry and becomes no stickier than WD-40 which i still use for some areas. dust will stick to it but not sand for example.

We have a GLS Premium and go off road - bush and beach - regularly. We don't have any rust at all. I do give it a good wash after the beach especially.

Hello from Costa Rica! Mine is a 2020 MR Triton just like yours with almost 40,000km and it doesn't have corrosion like yours. Is expected that with just one salty water crossing this type of corrotion will start to appear but that is normal to almost any ute built these days. Taking good care of your vehicle and just spraying the underneath with water after muddy or sandy conditions will make the difference! Cheers mate!

I clean the underbody with a sprayer made for it. I connect the soap mixer and add wash and wax to it. I dont get much rust beside the exhaust that get hot and cold very quicly. This is something we do a lot in europe because we salt the roads to melt the ice away and the cars dont like that at all.

I still love the footage of you hitting that water too fast 😉 I’ve had my triton 11 months nearly got 18000 on it drove to Darwin for Christmas burnt some fuel at the 130 km speed limit in the NT 😂😂😂

Thanks for the video. For underbody protection, John Rooth ("Roothy"), has a great video on Lanotech which is quite inexpensive and easy to do yourself. I reckon doing that once a year would make quite a big difference. For body protection, Bushwrapz is reasonably priced, and I reckon would stop most of those dints and scratches.

I've 15k km on my MR. Its got surface rust in a lot of the same spots you have it but it's not as bad as I haven't gone off road like you have. I think to save money they only put one coat of paint on these things. Great rigs but the paints a bit thin

I’ve got a mr triton glx+ 19 model, live right next to the beach and vehicle is often on the beach and i’ve not had any issues like yours . I had the tub spray linned and rust proof with annual top up and nil issue , my previous mn triton however ended up a rust bucket 😂😂

I spray under my wrangler once a year with Penetrol it’s for wood but it soaks into steel and creates a barrier no rust after 5 years of regular beach driving

Mq triton with 90k and plenty of beach, mud and water. I just spray regularly now with wd40. Fairly cheap and seams to do the trick. On a side note. Look at upgrading those bash plates soon. All it took was one knock to the stock plate and it busted my diff pumpkin and put a crack in the sump. Wish I had done the bashplate before I went offroad. Now I have 3mm stainless steel (no rust) and upgraded mounts and held up well. Enjoy watching your videos and if WA ever opens up head on over and Ill show your some great spots 👌

All Japanese brands rust and rot far quicker than American and European brands. American and European vehicles are properly prepared to drive on salt covered roads in winter. Hence their greater tolerance to rusting and rot. Japan to my knowledge doesn't have a great deal of snow so their vehicles are not properly prepared for snow driving and everything else that comes with it. Some dude from the UK who owns a used car business and reviews vehicles for a living said that Japanese vehicles no matter what type rust much faster than the European vehicles. He said happens with pajero, prado, pajero sport etc.

Hey mate, some of those areas are just accepted by Mitsubishi. 9000km's on a GSR and my tailshaft spacer and rear muffler hanger is coated like yours. The service dept, noted it when raised and said all tritons and pajeros have this and as it's surface rust they just note it but don't treat it etc. Just to let you know!

Years ago they used to use a tar like spray on undersides. Now with cost savings and "efficiencies" to be had, the need to future proof cars has been lost to a large degree. Unfortunately the trade off of a lower cost car/manufacturing process is a loss of longevity .

I have a MR Triton GLS Premium with 80k on it and I take it on the beach semi-regular and I have no rust at all. I am extremely thorough with clean it afterwards though which may make all the difference.

I have a 2020 Mr with 45,000ks on it and I take it to the beach and off road all the time and I have nowhere near as much rust... But then again I'm pretty particular in the way I clean it after each trip.
@garysheppard4028

I don't think they'd do things like coating the underbody etc because that costs $$$. They want to get a vehicle that looks good and goes reasonably well onto the showroom floor for the lowest price possible. The market is super competitive and anything you add to a car that costs money raises your price in comparison to your competitors. So with things like rust proofing that are not immediately obvious and will only have an effect down the track? Hmmm, maybe not do it and shave some bucks off so that you can make your price sharper and gain that tad more market share.

mate my nissan with similar kays and only a few off road trips is getting rusty as well . In fact it had factory rust from new on welds. Ive never been in salt water but been on the beach. Ive done alot more off road in a Toyota including a salt water crossing at fraser and it was like new after 100 thousand kays . After every trip on all 4wds I own I always hose it down as a minimum then wash it not long after. I polish the paint twice a year as well. The nissan looks like its been sand blasted in places like yours. Its a pricing thing mate and your mitsubishi seems a a bit worse than my np300. You have done more off road though. Ive been looking at other brands made in thailand like ranger and hilux and they seem to hold up much better. Im unsure of using the lanolin but am considering it but may just let it all go and restore the undercarriage with proper por 15 that restoration guys use. its all just cosmetic at this stage. Just enjoy it for a few more years and at least you paid almost half of what a luxy costs now during covid and chip shortages . You can afford a 30k resto with all your savings or just trade it in for another one.

I’ve got a 2021 mr gls with 20k km. I don’t have much rust at all man. I spend spend 2-3 hours hosing everything down that may be why but not sure. I’m really anal when it comes to cleaning it. Even my cvs and everything still look pretty good and I’ve done some off roading and beach driving

@@mrtriton5405 my engine bay is pretty much the same as yours but I haven't done any crossings of salt water only fresh. I just noticed the other day my paint was becoming chalky so have had to do a cut and polish all over. Bit annoying with the paint it must be thin!

Your not meant to go through salt water or drive on beaches with vehicles !!!! You will never get all the salt out of the seams, asking for big trouble!
@Istoleurpancake

Driving through saltwater like that what did you expect to happen? I had a 30 year old hilux with no treatments and it had less rust. she spent countless hours doing beach work but I never drove her through saltwater like that for that very reason. If you have to go through saltwater like that go as slow as possible so U don't flick it up everywhere
