Wow, you did a great job describing what actuaries do! I’m in P&C pricing in the US, and one thing I do want to note is that pricing isn’t all about number crunching! There is actually quite a bit that goes into pricing, and it’s fun to figure out which rating variables are driving up losses for the insurance company and how to go about fixing these issues. I hope you got comfortable with coding from your uni project since actuaries do a lot of coding (Excel VBA, R, Python, SQL)! 😂

I'm in the process of studying to be an actuary as a career change. I think the thing that most attracted me to the actuarial profession is that it seems to be very meritocratic. For the most part, it really just seems about whether you can prove your ability to do the job by passing the exams. When I went to a career fair for my University, they told me the valedictorian tried to apply and they couldn't even take his resume because he hadn't passed any of the exams yet. Pass the tests, get the job. Pass more tests, get a raise. Once you're an actuarial fellow, you basically have guaranteed employment in your field as long as you want. It seems like a great deal for anyone that's smart, but is stuck getting jerked around at the bottom.

But I also watched your video about the decision and I understand all your reasonings, so I just hope that you're going to enjoy this path, as well and realise all your goals! Really? In Germany that salary would be very low. In my case i got nearly two times more...and I didn't have to pay that much money for uni (just 300€ per semester). So why should I go to these "top unis"? Makes no sense... You can even get a better salary with less effort in time and money...

@@f4game Sadly a lot of graduates don't get anything like that , some won't even earn enough to pay off their student loans , a university education is only good when you have a definite career goal , go to any coffee shop in the UK and you can be pretty sure some of the staff are graduates who can't get a job in their field of learning and sadly most never will .

@@f4game A lot of University courses are very poorly career focused , art history , media studies, archaeology , sports science ? good luck with making a career from subjects like that . @f4game
@f4game 3 года назад
@Nicky L But here it will rise as well. At first you are classified by your level of degree (bachelor, master...). Lets say you start at level 12 and when you have 1-2 years work experience you are level 13. Then you will get more responsibility (level 14) and at some time you are out of any levels. Then you have to hammer out a deal by your own. But your right, it depends on your taking home money. Hows the tax situation for her in UK? In Germany she has to pay round about 40 percent taxes (as a single and health insurance and pension included)

@seonaideadie5049
@seonaideadie5049 3 года назад
That isn’t true for a starting graduate job in the UK. Every graduate scheme has a baseline salary to start with, the only variation is within location (you’re paid more in London than in Manchester for example). After gaining qualifications you can then apply for a more competitive rate taking into consideration your qualifications and contribution to the company. As someone who went to an oxbridge level university in the UK, a lot of the well-paid university graduates go into family businesses or get jobs through family connections. Not many are as well paid as you may think - many are also unemployed. Just because you have oxbridge title doesn’t guarantee anything.
