Being a 106 man in my youth I can tell you that those inner arch areas are very common to get holes in and they went on cars around 10 years old or less! they're easy enough to plate if you have a welder, I would say other than that it's actually not very bad and that wouldn't put me of driving home in it because having seen enough of these being crashed, that rotten section is the least of your worries. Those rot patches can get missed sometimes because they're under a wheel arch liner if I remember correctly, Being a 60 something thousand mile example I would say it's worth saving as they're starting to become a rare site on the roads.
@cornishhh
@cornishhh Год назад
I had an AX and the arches went the same way on that. I'd have no qualms about driving that either, but in close to 50 years of driving I've never had more than a minor bump. IMO paranoia about serious accidents needs more risk assessing. Risk aversion has become a serious problem in our society.

The inner wings do need welding yes, but me being an MOT tester, can safely say not an MOT fail as that is a bit more then 30cm's away, i would myself put an advise on it though. The area where the rot is, is only a single skin and as such has no strength there, where the shocks tower is, is double skinned so stronger, even in brand new fresh out of the factory they never ever faired well in full frontal impact, cars have moved on greatly since. we can only fail corrosion with in 30cm's of a prescribed area or a load bearing member, so yeah those inner wings on an MOT are advise only.

I had a phase 1 106 - a 1.4 n/a diesel. Good little car, but it rusted behind the headlights too. By the time it was about six years old it desperately needed sorting out, and when a core plug went in an inaccessible part of the engine, the mechanic I used decided it was time to bite the bullet - he took the engine and gearbox out as a unit, and welded the front end up. He generously allowed me access to his garage over a weekend and I ended up rattle canning the engine bay in satin black before the car was put back together. It looked OK, actually - even though the rest of the car was maroon. Another sign of flimsiness was one frosty morning. I moved the car a short distance, and when I pulled the handbrake up the floor cracked where the handle was bolted in. Again, welding needed on a six year old car, with the interior needing stripped so the carpets could come out. A bit of plate went in to strengthen things more than Peugeot had. The remnants of the rattle cans came in again for the paint finish on that repair. Cleverly designed and good to drive a 106 may be, but they’re not exactly robust.

@andrewmalyon5699 Год назад
The 106 is still a lovely little car,2 areas on the inner wings to cut out and do properly, not just plate over,not near any suspension mounts, half a day's work for someone with a welder, throughly waxoyl new metal and whole underneath and you have a car with years left in it,your still make a good bit on your purchase price.

10 years ago I was given a 106 Rallye (pre-facelift) because the owner said it was rusted through. I could not believe it was beyond saving, since it was totally mint on the outside (door, panels, everywhere), as well as driving faultlessly When I got a closer look everything back of the rear axle were rotted through (boot floor, inner wings, body reinforcements etc.) plus some rot in the passenger compartment floor. So much to my chagrin I had to scrap it. Compared to that, your green Pug does not look bad at all (not so much fun as the Rallye, through)

They rarely ever rot at one end alone. You also need to take the back seats out and the plastic cladding and check up inside the structure above the rear wheels . They can disappear altogether and just leave the seats and cladding floating in mid air. Forgot to mention, re clutch: check the cable is free then dip the clutch and spin your foot off it, allowing it to spring upwards of it's own accord. Doing that a few times usually brings back the adjustment and bite point.

Patch in the welds and then decide how you want it finished. I'd just put under seal on it and put it back together. One long day and you'll be sorted.

The current system for VED when buying or selling a car is distinctly iffy. The seller can't reclaim any partial months so at the point where the buyer goes to try to pay a fresh lot of VED the DVLA should date it from when the old one expired. They have all the information they need and it's only a partial month so there's no scope for fraud. 15th April - I ask to pay VED on a vehicle I'm just buying. Two possibilities: 1) It has current valid VED. The existing half month should be transferred to me and my year which I'm paying for should run from 1st May. 2) It doesn't have existing valid VED. I have to pay from 1st April. Perfectly simple to implement. Whether the current system is a result of greed or of couldn't-be-arsed-ness is a matter for speculation.

Those inner wings are not that big of a deal ian. Those are not really a part of the support structure, it probably isn't even a MOT failiure. The supportmembers on this car are lower.. its just a water and debris catch-area so it rusts easily. Especially around the washer bottle. On the other side there is a secondary airpump hanging, wich also really likes to catch a lot of dirt en water and therefor also really likes to trow an engine light at you because it is seized in rust (and those are expensive to replace) Its about an Afternoon of work perhaps?

I’ve got a wee bit of grot on my ZX in similar spots on the inner wing. Passed the MOT with merely an advisory as it’s nowhere near the strut tops and not structural as they begin as holes anyway for trim clips. I’ve treated it with rust converter and chassis paint to stop it in its tracks.

The wear on that front tyre, I'd want to get the tracking done after I'd been round the steering joints first looking for excessive wear

Yeah, that seems to have got worse on the drive home.

Time to pass that onto a pro as that is clearly a safety issue and needs more investigation and a kind owner willing and able to get it sorted

I don't think that rot is enough to fail the MOT. At least it would not fail in Norway, as it's too far from the strut tops. I had a Mercedes C-class with a whole lot more rust in the inner wings, and it did not fail for it. It failed for other rust, but not the inner wings.

Think in the UK, it's an advisory for rust within 30cm of a suspension mounting or a fail if the rust is severe enough.

Pity about the pug. Maybe you should consider welding classes. It would be a handy skill to have due to your elderly fleet.

I am more worried about getting stains on your new trousers than the welding needed at the front of the Peugeot

Sad to see a decent little motor needing the welders skills ... but if someone takes it on and fixes it she will live on ... far more environmentally friendly than being scrapped and another chunk of overweight over priced metal hitting the highways ... good work 👍

All very doable… no need for histrionics about safety… half a day’s welding once you get it stripped down.

Honestly, that’s the easiest place to weld and repair and is very cheap to do. By no means is the whole car “rotten”

I'd recommend getting a ecu cover on there. You can buy one pretty cheap

The corrosion is not on a structural component. they are purely cosmetic. The front chassis legs deform in an accident the inner wing are not part of any structure.

personally I am not sure its an mot failure as its far enough away from the strut (30cm). having had the c15 stablemate, that's nothing, mine had fist sized holes on both sides! you've showed the issues, sell it on and let it live, its a lovely little car, in a stunning green!

If i remember correctly the 106 wasn’t the safest car when new, tho the facelift model maybe slightly better. These were so common back in the day. I remember as they got older, the diesel version (very economical but slow) was hard to start in winter. I’ve seen this on other diesels as well. Fine in warm weather but struggle to start in winter. I don’t know why.
