What I love about Wiard is how some pronounce it as "weird" and some as "wired". In my head, it's "wizard" but the Z is silent.
@intrinsnik
@intrinsnik 3 года назад
It's "wizard" to me, too
@jonautry
@jonautry 3 года назад
Grant originally intended it to be pronounced as ‘weird’ but a family with that name (who also pronounced it that way) wrote him a letter saying they objected to him using their name. He couldn’t really rename things at that point, but decided if he pronounced it ‘wired’ from that point on that it would be a good compromise. So it’s kind of both of the first two. Would be interested to know where wizards stand on all of this.

I just love everything about modular synthesizers. I started my musical journey as a vocalist, then turned into samples and then began inching my way towards synthesizers, because I finally had the slightest bit of disposable income when I got my student loans. Even though I love traditional keyboard synthesizers a lot, there's just nothing that really unlocks my creativity like a modular system. I'm only at the beginning of my journey (completed my first row yesterday!) but it just feels *right* for me. Thank you for telling your story and explaining your current system, it was a really nice and inspiring experience as these always are. One thing that I want to address that's a bit unrelated is that there's a visual element of modular that's underrated in my opinion. That's for a reason of course, sound should come before visuals, but every time I look at a modular system I find it to be a beautiful object. The modules form a beautiful bricolage and when I see a module like Coherence, it just piques my interest as a visual piece of art as well. There's also the blissful nature of the playing. I don't remember who did the piece, but there was an article about how modular videos might be a new thing to relax to after work, just like ASMR is.

Despite using and programming synths since 1979 I have never ventured into modular synthesis. Until now. My journey has just begun. I am going to be mixing purchased modules alongside self built ones. I've already built a mixer unit.

the boogie filter is awesome, one of my most loved filters my favorite two tricks about it are mixing different outputs for various bandpass responses (and even highpass when mixed with the original signal) and feeding the 6db output back into one of the inputs while listening to the 18db output for the fattest sound this filter can make

It's nice to see some love for Wiard modules on RU-vid! I also have the Osc II + Anti-Osc combo, and it's a great alternative to any single complex oscillator. Rediscovering interesting timbres everytime I experiment with them.

i am still unsure about getting a hermod, while on the onse side it seems like exactly what i am looking for, i fear on the other hand, that it is not really something for on the fly modular sessions. what is your experience since you have that module? i fear a bit, that it will degrade to a midi->cv/gate in collaboration with my octatrack

I’ve always thought about getting a second anti oscillator. Have you cross modulated them? Any interesting results?
@Hainbach
@Hainbach 5 лет назад
The best is to run both into a borg and let them play either the same notes or harmonies. Modulate the wave in. It's brutal and beautiful, all kinds of sounds in there. My second one is broken and drifts, needs repairs though, so that trick does not work right now.
@modularfoundations8552
@modularfoundations8552 5 лет назад
I don’t have a borg but I think I’m sold on a second one. I had a wiard anti osc but had the same problem as you with the drifting pitch. Got a new version but it’s definitely tamer than the wiard

Hey Stefan, super Video!

As a beginner (3 days modular synthesis, 6 months Mother-32) I really love the small details the hermod can add to the sound, like adding an LFO vibrato and being able to set the % or have the arpeggio with a lot of settings .... the only thing that sucks for me is that the start of the recording is always empty because I have to reach for the keyboard and I'm not that good with piano keys (yet) ... maybe there is a trigger setting somewhere for the recording ... looking forward to a review ;)

i really can't stand it when someone calls something sounding "musical". a module is not more or less musical than any another. likewise a 50.000$ speaker is not more or less musical than any 5$ speaker. more accurate, louder, finer resolution, better quality yes, yes, yes and yes but there's no such thing as "musical" sounding. it is a bit like trying to find a superlative to "best" which there is none. or describing one circle as "rounder" as another. or saying that an oak tree is much more of a tree than a pine. they're both 100% trees. what would be the textbook definition of "musical"? more like bach or more like stockhausen?
@Hainbach
@Hainbach 4 года назад
I beg to differ. The Wiard is in texture, in envelope behavior and in the way the LPGs work remindful of acoustic instruments, hence it has musical quality because I hear plucked upright and oboes when playing with it. Doepfer in comparison has different envelope shapes which lead to a more technical, analytical sound. Now that can be musical too (if you watch my channel you might have heard a few test equipment pieces) but it does not grab my inspiration as an arranger as the Wiard does. I am a composer also of acoustic music and have written for orchestra, so I that is what I am talking about when I talk about musical qualities of instruments.
