My sound system consists of 4 SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers (2 for the mains and 2 for the side channels), an SVS Ultra Center speaker, 6 SVS Prime Elevation speakers (4 ceiling mounted for Dolby Atmos and 2 mounted on the back wall for the rear channels) and 2 SVS SB-3000 Subwoofers. The system is powered by a Yamaha Aventage RX-A8A 11 channel AVR connected to a Panamax M5400-PM Power Conditioner.

Halfway through the video, I was already thinking, phase cancellation issues running duals. But you made the right choice going with compact sealed subs. With some of the ported subs, placement flexibility isn't an option. Placement and time alignment is key. I appreciate you sharing some of the frustrations, and challenges one typically encounters installing and setting up new subs. It's unfortunately not plug and play, unless you're really lucky and your sub locations are almost perfect. It's clear you enjoy the process, and tinkering with settings. Are you considering getting a Umik-1 so you can run REW (room EQ wizard)? After that, consider getting a MiniDSP 2x4HD, for more precision time alignment and adjusting for a house curve. That opens the door for BEQ as well, where it gets really fun! Lastly, I'm not a firm believer of "break-in." I think your ears are just getting used to tight, accurate bass, and not the boomy, loud bass that comes with lesser subs. It takes time getting used to. And you can't go back once you do.
@RandomDistractionsYT
@RandomDistractionsYT 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback and yes it was eye opening to see that you can't just get better sound by buying something bigger or more powerful. It was enjoyable tinkering and a little more satisfying I think when it worked out. Not immediately but definitely may look into the Umik-1 and other things in the future as it is fun to get the most out of what you got. Whether it's break-in or my ears, you are correct I am enjoying the bass out of those sealed subs more and more for sure.

@@RandomDistractionsYT imo the mini dsp HD is a must to achieve great bass in your room. Well worth the investment. I am running dual pb16s with a denon 8500. No getting around the fact that Audyssey and Arc just don't do a great job integrating multiple subs.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have seen some videos on that and it does look like a good option and would provide more adjustability than what the SVS app can provide. Will put that on my wish list. Dual PB16s?! Can't imagine what those monsters sound like.

Interesting comment about your initial reaction to the SB3000s. I just got a single SB3000 and had a similar reaction: quite underwhelmed at first. But, like you, I literally connected it without touching a setting on the sub or my AVR or any different sub placements just to give it a listen "right out of the box". And, like you, I expected to get "blown away", especially given the reputation of SVS and this sub specifically. However, I wasn't. My first thought was to run it "hot" by cranking up the dBs and that helped a bit. Once I switched its location (right of centre speaker instead of left) and did some proper calibration and EQing through the AVR and SVS app, I did definitely get blown away. The SB3000 was replacing my 1200 watt Paradigm Seismic 12 so I was accustomed to earthquake-like sub performance. They are clear, well-behaved but not shy about thumping the listener hard with some serious sound pressure. Two-channel music performance is as important as 5.1 home theatre for me and the SB3000 excels in both areas. Simply an amazing sub. Thinking about going dual, which I suspect you would recommend. Great video and channel -- liked and subscribed!

That’s awesome! Congratulations on your dual SVS SB3000’s. Hopefully after some tweaking those subs will shake the house. I’m still moving my PB-2000 Pro around after a couple of months. Len, I had to add a second sub in all of my setups except my office. I added a second one there recently because I am a bass head (didn’t really need it for this small room). In a regular sized room, with the nulls, it’s virtually impossible to get an even flow of bass without a second sub. I had dual PB-2000s before. I had one initially and couldn’t get that consistent bass throughout the room. A second one smoothed it all out. Even after using Audyssey with two subs there are still nulls but they are minimal.

I also have dual Hsu ULS-MK2s which push a lot more air than the SB-3000s and go deeper. However, I have a soft spot the SB-3000s because they really rock for the size and hit hard but can play soft. I’m so close to pulling the trigger on the anthem 1140 but with all the issues and bugs I’m still considering going with the Denon 8500. By the way I have a pair of the ported pb4000s. They are so big that I am limited to placement. I haven’t play with the eq on the app simply out of fear of screwing something up. Plus I’m just not sure where to start. Any assistance would be very helpful. Keep up the great work.

While I am bummed about the bugs, the sound that is coming out of that receiver is still worth it. However, I have heard good things about Denon and the 8500 is a top of the line one so it sounds like a good option too. Yeah, those ported subs are big but I've heard that they can produce some great sound so always a compromise. As for the EQ, having a mic and some sort of software to show you what it's doing, is what really helps. Someone made a suggestion to try on the subs so I'll make a follow up video about that and will show how I used the EQ. Thanks for the comment!

No, please don't worry about it. My issue was placement so even though ARC improved it, it was having do deal with a really huge null because of my original placement. Arter moving them, ARC did a perfect job on them. This is an older video but in some of the newer ones I have I mention how well it does. Bass is integrated so well and you still have the ability to adjust to taste. There is actually also a beta release that everyone is saying does an even better job. I'm a little worried about trying a beta but it seems more people have good luck with it than those that don't. So don't worry, I'm really happy with what ARC is doing in my system.

At 16:40, you discuss your levels on both subs and you mention that they sounded better when dialed down to -9 and -13 db. I'm just wondering why cooling them down sounded better? Was the drop in those levels in conjunction with other adjustments like changing the DSPs I think that you had mentioned?
@RandomDistractionsYT
@RandomDistractionsYT Год назад
Thanks for checking out the video, I had to look back as it's been a little while and my settings have changed since then but back then the biggest difference was the placement of the subs. Were I originally had them I had them turned up a lot and was not feeling or hearing much bass but after moving them to different locations (in this case the corners of the room) they were sounding louder and actually as of today they are even lower while still producing great amounts of bass. One is at -24 and the other is at -26. ARC Genesis also plays a part in that in helping it to sound good in my room.
@MindTravelsChannel
@MindTravelsChannel Год назад
@@RandomDistractionsYT Thanks for that response. I just got my second SB 3000 so I'm fine tuning everything. After some initial frustration, I got them working together beautifully. Fortunately, in my room, I have lots of flexibility for placement of both subs (i.e., front, rear, side, diagonal arrangement) while still keeping some sense of decor and hiding all cables (I want a killer home theatre but not if it makes my family room look like a frat house). Ultimately, both at front on the outside of the front left and right speakers worked best. I have both set at -10 (-5 on the AVR). The big difference maker came when I adjusted various frequencies on the app quite aggressively. The subs and thus my whole system came alive even more and I got a new level of SPL and room shaking. FYI: I'm also using Auralex SubDude-II isolated pads to decouple the subs from my hardwood floor. Looking forward to more of your videos!

@@RandomDistractionsYT Just one other quick question: with the subs lined up essentially flush (i.e., in a straight line) with the front speakers (L, C, R), would you recommend setting the phase on 0 (zero) for both subs? That's what I kept them at and they sound fine. I tried other numbers and, although I didn't notice much difference, 0 seemed to work best.
@RandomDistractionsYT
@RandomDistractionsYT Год назад
Unfortunately for that you do need to be able to take measurements. My Anthem MRX1140 does it automatically but what it does is do a sweep to take a measurement at different phases and then which ever provides the most output will be what it sticks to but even though it's doing them one after the other, to me they all sounded the same, but I could see from the output that some were 1-3db higher overall so could see that there was a better setting even though I couldn't hear it. If you don't have the ability to measure I probably wouldn't worry to much about it since you like the way it sounds now. It very well may be that 0 is the best setting for your system.

So, for Home theater ported are always better so I am curious why did you go se3akled? Also going from a klipsch to an svs is a huge upgrade But why didn tyou just go to the PB-1000 Pro 12" ? Cost is less and they are far superior to the Klipsch yet perfect for home theaters, the 3000 is a little bit of over kill. Anyway I was just curious, to each his own obviously. I went with dual pb-1000 Pros and couldnt be happier with them and I am so glad I saved the money from the 2000 , 3000 or 16's I paid 1100.00 shipped for my two SVS subs direct from SVS with port plugs. there fantastic!1
@RandomDistractionsYT
@RandomDistractionsYT 2 года назад
Lots of good questions. In my high school years I had an 18" sealed sub in my car and loved the way that sounded and even though I watch more movies than listen to music I still wanted that tight bass sound. However, with sealed they do tend to need more power than the ported versions so was worried that I wouldn't have enough so for the price of dual PB2000 pros (the ones I almost went with) I instead went with the open box SB3000s. I don't regret it one bit, they have been great and because of my Anthem receiver and what it does with music I'm actually listening to more music than I have in the past. Since they are only sealed they are also about the same size as my old Klipsch so had better wife approval (not complete approval by any means though). To your point though, I've heard lots of great things about the pb1000 pros and 2000 pros and that because they offer the port plugs you can get the best of both worlds. So I probably would have been happy with them as well. Glad you are enjoying yours as well!

I have a SB2000 and i don't like it, its the old version not the Pro one. When you do a subwoofer crawl you are generating certain frequencies to run on the sub or what do you run?
@RandomDistractionsYT
@RandomDistractionsYT Год назад
There are different suggestions on the crawl so it may depend on what you have and are able to do. You can play a song that you are familiar with and see where it sounds the loudest or best to you or what I did was run frequency sweeps but instead of depending on my ears I used a calibration microphone to visually see where it sounded the best. With the SB2000s you could also do a reverse crawl so instead of putting the sub in the listening position. Move the sub around and listen from the main listening position to see what sounds best. It's a bit of a pain to go through but for my system it did help for sure.
@AexoeroV
@AexoeroV Год назад
@@RandomDistractionsYT thanks for your reply, i think your choice of using a mic is better than relying just on your ears. Can you tell me what software have you used to see the graph of the frequency sweep? And what i need to look after in the graph, for nuls ? Can you give me a link so that i can see how a bad graph and good graph looks like? Im not into this kind of stuff but i think a good graph for a 20hz-80hz sweep should show a rising line as straight as possible from 20 to 80, right?
@RandomDistractionsYT
@RandomDistractionsYT Год назад
Sure thing, the software that I used and is really popular is REW. It's free and works well. It gives you the ability to run sweeps and capture the data. I don't have a link but it will be very noticeable if you have a null. Based on what your subwoofer is capable of what I have heard is you would want to stay within 3-5db higher or lower from your target volume (for ex: 75dB). If you see a dip below 5dB and in some cases more than that then you have a null. You could use what Audioholics showed for the SB2000 as reference (www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-reviews/sv-sound-svs-sb-pb-2000). Looks like the SB2000 should maintain it's level from 30-140hz. In room the graph will look different because you have room gain and it won't be as smooth but you are just trying to get it as smooth as possible.
@AexoeroV
@AexoeroV Год назад
@@RandomDistractionsYT thanks a lot for helping!! I will get a calibration mic, is the UMIK-1 good enough? I know about REW, i don't have it yet but as far as i know you cant see in real time the measurements like lets say an audio spectrum analyzer app like Spectroid.
@RandomDistractionsYT
@RandomDistractionsYT Год назад
Yeah the UMIK-1 is actually the more recommended one, I used a cheaper one the UMM-6 by Dayton Audio as another option. It does have an RTA function so you can have that running and either use an audio track or use the built in generator to output noise or certain frequencies at the same time to get real time measurements. That is what I used in some of my Spotify playlist demo videos.

You know what they say, it depends on other factors that would be specific to your situation (room, acoustics, etc). However, based on the research that I did and the advice that I heard if you are only watching movies you would probably want to consider the PB3000s. They seem to provide that low impact for movies (which specs do seem to agree) were as the SB3000s are more accurate for music. I will say that I've watched quite a few movies with my SBs and I don't feel like I'm missing much. Best of luck with whatever you choose though!

@@RandomDistractionsYT thank you so much buddy but i heard you to video you say its not so good the sb3000😥 so you believe maybe and the pb3000 will not so good subwoofers i have prime towers and i want something very good you believe other subwoofer with same money or less to be bêtter from pb3000😥🙏😌 thank you again waiting answer 😁

At first the SB3000s didn't sound good but after I moved them around and tweaked the EQ they sounded really good. In fact I'm having to turn them down because otherwise they overpower everything else. I love how they sound now. I think the PB3000s would be good and if you buy them direct from SVS I believe you have some time to try them out and can return or upgrade to their bigger subs. As for other manufacturers I've heard good things about HSU research, that was another one I was considering. There are a lot out there though so my best suggestion is to do some research and maybe watch some other videos to see what others think.

@@RandomDistractionsYT im from Greece buddy i cant take svs product and ruturn them because svs in Greece dont do that😔 also svs from my home is 500km so i cant go to their shop listen speaker's fuckkkkk 😢 do you have facebook to talk each other bêtter ? 😁 And analysing some stuff ?🙏🙏🙏

I see, sorry to hear that they don't do that in Greece. Well I don't know if you knew but the SVS website has a subwoofer matching tool and when I put in the SVS prime towers the suggested subwoofers were the 3000 and 4000 series. Since you listen to movies I would say you may still want to go with the ported versions of either of those. Also would suggest to go dual, that also makes a big difference.

Subwoofer crawl...lol..no..outdated method. You need Room Eq Wizard and the Mini DSP 2×4 HD.

As I continue to learn more and more about home theater stuff I do keep hearing about Room EQ Wizard and the MiniDSP. I may eventually get there although right now I don't feel like I know enough about it to even try it.

@@RandomDistractionsYT strangely enough your skill set that you just demonstrated with the use of a measurement mic and the subs software shows you already know the process 😉!!!! It is remarkably similar 😀! REW software is just more detailed, and the Mini DSP 2×4 HD Is just more powerful EQ.

@@RandomDistractionsYT look at Home Theater Gamers’ miniDSP tutorials here in YT where he summarizes Home Theater Guru’s very detailed primer on sub optimization with REW and miniDSP. The guru even has a method to replace the crawl with a phone app. If you’ve learned the SVS app tools as well as Room Gain, Deep Bass, and Tilt in ARC Genesis, you’ll take to REW and miniDSP just fine. The REW sweeps will help you dial in the Anthem and the SB3000s which will really open up the sound stage with the new phase tool in ARC Genesis and your 1140. It’s a small investment with massive rewards for the great equipment you acquired. Looking into adding 2 SB3000s to my 2 ML Depth i subs as they are only 300 watts and just will not pressurize the room. They sound great for 10 year old subs, I just need more power lol.

@@bigdogaxis Thanks, I'll check those videos out as I do still have the thought of looking into that. I've heard some good things about the phase update but just waiting for it to come out of beta before trying it out. Happy so far with the sound so don't mind waiting. Can't recommend SVS enough, I've loved the SB3000s since I've had them and always put a smile on my face but like yourself was doing pretty good with the previous system. Best of luck with whatever you decide though.

LOL, yeah I did have a lot of info on this video. The short version is I got a great deal on the subs and after some initial trouble setting them up I got them sounding great and to this day love them and totally recommend them!
