Sometimes, events conspire against me when it comes to creating content for you all. In this case, I drove a 250 mile round trip to review a Nissan 370z... only to find the weather on the day was far from ideal for testing a powerful RWD sports car.
I've pieced together what I can from the review but rather than chuck it in the bin, I thought you might like to see what happens when reviews go wrong. Did I salvage it? You be the judge.

Good wheels really transform these cars. The runout 350S had a lovely set of Rays and then they released the replacement model with these.. They ruin the lines of the car imo

I had an 08 350Z (with the later engine) It was a good car and fun to drive, but it fell short of being a great car as it was too heavy to really handle well yet without being fast enough to make up for it. The suspension was also pretty unforgiving.
@Ripst4rt

I pushed my 06 to the absolute limits and it performed as well as anything. I actually preferred it over the 370 i owned after that. But yea 1600kg is a bit too heavy

This review is far from disaster imho, and hope you can review it again in the next time, like 'revision' review, just like you do in GT-R :D Btw, if your brother-in-law can afford 20k-ish, Porsche 996 should be in his list :D
@JayEmmOnCars

A 996 would be too old for him I think and he would want something new enough for a warranty, although I love the 996 myself too

Recent Nismo prices have crashed unfortunately. Can get a MK2 nismo for high 20ks now despite being relatively new. The MK2 is a much nicer interior IMO, although I am biased. Not the fastest car, but this is much more fun compared to a Golf.

"... it's zero outside" - that means it's 32F/freezing for any Americans still stuck in the 18th century. I wouldn't call the review a disaster by any stretch. I'm pretty certain I've watched people who get paid not inconsiderable salaries review sportscars in bad weather. An Aston Martin in torresntial rain comes to mind. It does tend to help if you have regular access to Southern California though. Or Spain. Britain is for Land Rovers. Another thing! When I was starting out, your "first sportscar" didn't have 330BHP! It was more likely to have 90.

Had a 54 plate 350z...amazing as standard (fully loaded with rays/ nismo exhaust). Loved it. Sold it for a black edition 370z. Awful. Such a disappointment- wouldn’t slide, woolly handling, slow throttle response. Agree on the LSD comments- the one in the 350 as standard is far better.

Fun video that makes me reminiscent of the 370Z owned in Syracuse, NY. Syracuse’s winters, with the lake effect snow off Lake Ontario, frequently earned the city the coveted Golden Snowball award. It was there the 370Z was my daily driver. And like all cars should in Syracuse, mine had a set of snows for winter driving. And this is where the overarching, fully in control traction control system really shined. It basically ensured the car didn’t spin under responsible driving in the snow, but kept it fun none the less. However, this system was also its downfall. In non-extreme weather, it was still fully in control and seemed to steal any sense of feeling from the steering or chassis from the driver. The car fell numb. Comparing that to my current M240i, which really communicates what the car is doing beneath the driver, the 370Z can hardly be considered a sporty car.

Hey stop slagging yourself, that was pretty insightful! And it’s always helpful to really understand a car by putting it in the conditions it was not designed for. For example, the Golf R in that weather, is happier than on a dry pretty day, and for that reason they’re more coveted here in the land of ice and snow. It’s your shirts that you should be slagging I thought? Btw, the GT comparison might also be against the Porschuh 928? Though it’s much older. We in America the North, have GT questions and the Z series here are also nowhere on the sales charts I believe.

The Nissan petrol engines were adopted by the sister company Infiniti - which did come to the UK but still struggle to sell many. Same power plant was used in the FX and QX SUV models and some saloons too. Most of the Z interior is also common in the various Infiniti. You should hunt down a posh Nissan (Infiniti), maybe your the man to break the stigma and get them known to the UK market.

All the 370z GT models have a viscous lsd, the operation of this diff is very temperature dependant and be quite unpredictable, I'm assuming since it was so cold and the oil thick it would have been very slow to lock up. Not a bad review, I'd go along with most of it having owned a 08 350z, a '12 370z gt and a '62 plate supercharged 370z (With an aftermarket Quaife diff) . Cant believe there are only 2000 370z in the UK though

Too bad you guys don't get the Skylines. I've had a Z and currently have a G37 sedan (the Skyline V36)... G37 is a better use of the platform. Z is just a little too heavy and anodyne for a sports car but it works really well as a sedan/GT.

We do get the Infiniti G37/Q60, it's just very uncommon in the UK. I've been watching them recently to see what comes up and there are only 10-12 on sale at any given time, only for £10-15k however so cheaper than a 370Z and much more practical.

Review it in the dry next time lol and 350 luke warm review? It got a great reception when it came out...it was the 370 that didn't have the same appeal. Some items being the shorter rear, the crap stock sound, steering not as good as the 350, engine didn't have the same pizaz...as the HR 350' despite being related, there was just some...excitement missing. Fixed later on though in later models to an extent.

What is it like compared to the evora? I know it’s a heavy muscle car type drive whereas the evora is a light nimble fly. Correct assumption? Is the evora noticeably faster?
@JayEmmOnCars
@JayEmmOnCars 6 лет назад
My Evora is certainly quicker. This feels like it would be between an NA and S Evora. The Evora feels more bespoke and expensive, and rides much better but I never got to really test the 370's handling
@DauntingGecko
@DauntingGecko 6 лет назад
falchulk - it’s not exactly a light nimble thing. It’s a rear wheel bulking hulk of a thing at times.
@another3997
@another3997 6 лет назад
falchulk If you had bothered to read what was said, you would have noticed the word "drive". At no point did he refer to power, just the way the car drives. That might be too subtle a distinction for you, but nevertheless, for anybody with a brain, it's quite significant. It's a relatively heavy, front engined, rwd car with relatively little handling fineness. Classic muscle car traits.
@darrenaitken2383
@darrenaitken2383 6 лет назад
Actually I used to own a 350Z so I know what I meant and also what I am talking about. It didn't feel nimble like a lotus due to it's weight - at times it felt like it had a big fat arse on it rather than being able to dart in and out of corners. The drive was very linear and smooth as you worked your way through the gears - not like an S2000 where you had to rag it in every gear. It felt like a mini muscle car than a sports car. This is why I wanted to know what the 370Z felt like because I'd assume it's much like the 350Z. I am aiming to get an evora one day I thought I'd ask a sensible question. I don't need some jumped up person picking silly details from what I said. I wanted James to answer and he did - you on the other hand, butted in and rudely wanted to look clever. You're a plonker to put it politely.
@DauntingGecko

for the same money you can buy a cayman s, i just cannot see why you would choose one over a cayman s
@JayEmmOnCars
@JayEmmOnCars 6 лет назад
Some people, for whatever reason, just don't want a Porsche. And that's fine. This is a different car with a different character - better compared with a Z4 or even an MX5 type car
@1183newman
@1183newman 6 лет назад
True but comparing a 370z to a z4 or mx5 is a little harsh, the 370z is closer in spec to a cayman. It does make a valid alternative to a cayman however. I think the main argument for owning the 370z over the cayman s was the price. 370Z was cheaper. However toady you can buy both for a similar price and for that reason i think most would buy the cayman s over the 370.
@JayEmmOnCars
@JayEmmOnCars 6 лет назад
The Caymans are cheap principally because they have the engine issues of the time hanging over them. Otherwise they are great cars
@1183newman
@1183newman 6 лет назад
I think the engine issues are blown out of proportion quite abit. after 2006 they essentially fixed the issue which is when the cayman s entered production. The bearing used in 2006 is far better than previous to the point where cars produced in 2006 onwards im unaware of any failures. Those between 2002 and 2005 are the problem cars.
@rbentley1010
@rbentley1010 6 лет назад
Comparing a Cayman S to a 370z is an odd comparison... Cayman S is at least 2x the retail price of the Z. 370z is the best $/bhp in the car world. Yes I own a Z 😎.

i had the nismo 370z in storm white in 2015 and I can see how you would say its a sports car because looks and how you sit low in seats" but how many people wont to thrash a car to feel like your going fast" really wonts more torq and I found there was a good size gap betwean the power coming on after pushing pedal down" also the fuel it takes is Bad" and that's a guy who has had c63amg/rs focus/bmw m4 and audi rs5 so yes id take the golf r any day over this

jonny jones fuel is not the best, I get 20mpg, drive 6/7 days a week, spend about £35, £45 a week. Cover 120 miles per week...my civic cost me £25 30 a week........so you guy can moan to high heaven it is what it is. 350z was slightly better at 23 mpg.....golf r good car but boring and playing it safe. Glad I got the Z instead. Jap cars got more personality got everyone at work talking even non car ppl. They cant hate on it its that striking. That lag is ecu, why ppl get remapped. Older na cars cope with that better. Its all electric now
@another3997
@another3997 6 лет назад
jonny jones Lots of people like to "thrash" their cars to feel like you're going fast. That is generally the appeal of a 'sports car'. Feeling as though you're involved in the process, having to work to get the best from a car. Effortless power and huge torque do not a sports car make.
