@burntheboxes Hey brother! Thank you for replying. The hens were purchased at POL (point of lay). They are around 17 weeks old, and they should hopefully be laying within the next couple of weeks or so. I'd love to raise them from the ground up one day, though! I'm going to need to check out your community posts because I didn't see them yet. I might have been that I just missed them. But thank you for bringing it to my attention!! :)

It was definitely a little daunting at first, as there's not that much on the subject, but when I discovered and tried that recipe, and found that they not only survived, but flourished on it, it gave me hope that it is possible in 2024 to raise chickens without having to resort to expensive, unhealthy commercial feed and instead rely on the LORD's provisions. They are around 6 or 7 weeks now, and so much more energetic and healthy than my last batch, and, believe it or not, a lot less hungry. I have been playing around with a few recipes that I've found to see which one works the best for my flock, but the one I've kinda landed on for right now is a dry feed consisting of rolled oats, pumpkin seeds, basil, flax, grit, and crushed cashews. I also give them a can of sardines as a treat every 2 days which boosts their protein intake (which I might replace or alternate with scrambled eggs, because organic sardines are a little expensive). And then the rest of their diet is just scraps, grass, and bugs they find. I've also tried rice and beans, which is great, and they love it. I've even seen people even ferment it to give it probiotic properties. I just didn't have a good system to be able to cook it every day which is why I landed on my homemade dry mix. So, long story short haha, there are so many ways to do it, and I've found that everyone who makes their own kind of has there own thing going depending on what their budget and goals are. And, to me, that's the fun of it! P.S. I haven't even let my subscribers know about this yet, but I will soon be launching another channel dedicated solely to homesteading and raising chickens, where I will go over all of these things and so much more! I'll be posting a video about it this week here. ;) Would love to see you over there!
