So... I screwed up... I was working on my helmet but I rushed it and my Plastidip bubbled and ruined it... But, Clint (a follower of the channel) jumped in with this "Rapid Fill For EVA Foam" product saying that it may help me. So, let's see if it works!
Big thanks to Clint

You fixed it, hence why we make mistakes. We can learn to fix them.

I hate the white plastidip. It bubbles almost every time I use it. I think it's the area I live in but never have an issue with black plastidip.

People have been saying that, I usually use black plastidip and don't have many problems so I'm glad to hear that it may have just been the white plastidip. :)

This happened to me a lot in the beginning of my foam cosplay work. And to fill it in I just sanded the area down and then put in some regular glue, and then sanded it again until it was smooth

Nice! Yeah, I haven't had this happen to me before with plastidip, but I just rushed it this time and didn't give enough time between coats. :)

@@CosplayApprentice Yeah that was the mistakes I made early on in my cosplay career of only a few months ago. Granted I don't have the best sense of patience

I’ve heard about those Prop Monkey products. I wanted to try some out on a helmet I was building. But I’ve never had my Plastidip bubble! I have spray paint wrinkle tho :(

Yeah, it's pretty cool stuff :). I'm glad you haven't dealt with the bubling plastidip before. I've never had it happen before now, I just rushed it :/

So we are attempting our first armor piece for our niece (very simple design) with 5mm EVA foam as the base with trim and decorative scales using 2mm EVA to emulate Hiccup and Astrids dragonrider armor from How to Train Your Dragon. We were using the white plastidip When we used Plastidip the surface ended up very bubbly and pock-marked. We had sprayed in our garage (with proper ventilation) to avoid the outdoor moisture and humidity as I've had issues with this on plastic miniatures and acrylic primer, however, the surface quality still ended up being very poor. We had also heat-sealed the foam with a heat gun a few days prior to applying the plastidip. In addition, we have some layers of the 2mm trim foam glued along the edges of the armor plate scales peeled back and many of the scales glued on the armor surface peeled up along the scale edges. We are assuming that as the plastidip dried, it contracted and the "shrinking" cause the foam underneath to warp and peel up. We did try to use a heat gun to reshape some of the scales and trim and then re-glued these, but the plastidip did actually start bubbing and did not look very good at all. In the mean time since we don't have time to rebuild the armor before the holidays we are trying to fix the pockmarked surface by using a thinned gesso to try and even the surface so it doesn't look as bad. We're not quite sure what we are doing wrong, do you have idea what might have caused this and how we can avoid it in the future?

I have heard from lots of people that have had similar problems when using the white Plastidip. I will stick with black Plastidip for my future projects as a result, so I think that could be part of the problem. As for the 2mm foam changing shape. Sometimes regular 2mm craft foam will soak up a lot of what you put on it to begin with and can curl up as you said if it's not glued down completely. Using a denser 2mm foam helps, but also gluing them down completely if you are able or just doing your Plastidip in lighter coats/passes.

I learned the hard way that you don't use chrome made by Krylon! It never would get solid and dry, even after DAYS...IN GA! So i used Dupli-color from the auto store...dried in mins. !!!

I've never had much luck with Krylon either :) Dupli-Color is great! :)

What I do is use paint thinner and smooth the bubbles and texture out wearing a nitrile glove.

Any idea as to what went wrong and why it bubbled? Otherwise, good to know it can be fixed!

Yes, I have a video on getting a smooth plastidip coat but I didn't follow my own instructions. What happened was I rushed the process, it was warm out and I usually give the plastidip at least 15 mins between coats, but it seemed to be drying really quick so I would spray a section, then move on and then notice that the spot I just sprayed looked dry so I thought I could get a second coat in faster but then without giving it enough time there were still fumes or something escaping the first layer and pushed up through the second causing it to bubble. :/

idk What it is, but light colored plasti dip has NEVER come out nice for me at all. No matter what I tried, Id ALWAYS get those kind of results you got. I stick with black or grey. sure I might have to mask more when I paint but, better to have a tried and tested product vs the one that can't decide if its gonna cure nicely, or tries to skin its own surface before it degasses. Love Pdip but seriously the colors are a pain.

I'm glad you said that, I didn't want to blame the Plastidip but I was wondering if that had something to do with it because I did something else in black that same day and it was fine. :)

Also, Olivia just said she remembers that used white plastidip on some shields for the kids and she said that it had those same problems but she just thought it was her doing it wrong.

@@CosplayApprentice I'm glad that helped and I didnt look like another nutty prop maker comment ahaha!! Yeah I gave their colors so many tries and almost every time I had one type of poor result that doesnt happen with the black cans. I think the propellant and the pigment fight each other, pigment so thick with the rubber binding causing the gas to get trapped. I'm currently looking into spray systems for plasti dip and self mixing for colors. The pro grade color selection is choice, and seem to have better results than the cans overall. gotta test flexibility though, that's what has me worried.

Haha, right!?! It could be some acid spray from some creature or something that melted bubbles in my helmet or something :)
