You're right, in the comics he had only half of the traits i liked and the other half was just this annoying kid who was blessed with arachnid powers and couldn't see the bright side of it or was just a little bland. As a black person myself, I thought that Miles was exactly like me and not just facial features i mean exactly. I'm more relating to the into the spider-verse Miles but some comic material does derive from me too. My dad (was) a police officer and my mom was somewhat of a nurse and although that version is into graffiti art, I was into comic book art. See? A lot of similarities.

Great revisit for a topic still relevant to the comic world. I think what saved Riri and the rest of them moving to their own series with Champions. It gave them more room to breathe while Iron Man, and every other established character replaced by a "hip new and younger" version, got their titles back. There's some genuinely moments in Champions when they're handling smaller scale problems and even some bigger problems like Black Widow having to train Miles to kill in Secret Empire was beautiful. The thing that soured most comic fans (and not just people looking to scream about something on the internet) wasn't who replaced them - it was that they were replaced at all. They felt like we were being hocked off-brand cereal and told it was the definitive and only version of what we loved. They're fine if you like them as their own but they never felt like anything more than a knock-off of what we actually wanted. By shuffling them into a separate storyline away from the established hero, they have time to grow into their own characters while giving the fans back the traditional ones they grew to love over the years. Case in point: Amadeus Cho and Bruce Banner. Banner is one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel universe and it's not an understatement to say he's one of the few characters with a literally infinite powerset, but it takes a heavy toll. The genius yet meek scientist giving into his anger always has a price to pay and it's been a key plot point in many of his stories. Then we got Amadeus Cho. He's always been around and he was an alright character on his own or as a sidekick to Hulk or Hercules. But seemingly out of nowhere he becomes a better version of the Hulk. Super intelligent, super strong, and super young (if you couldn't tell by his soon-to-be outdated lingo.) The Hulk we loved was dead (for a bit) and this was the only version. Hope you enjoy cringey one-liners that are awful by even comic book standards... (Also, is no one going to talk about how an Asian superhero got stronger the more he concentrated, so he did math problems in his head? Because, uh... yeah... I'm only slightly over-exaggerating that...) Then Zub's run of Champions came and I have to say - it really did fix everything. Banner came back and Cho was extremely depowered to a realistic level to put him in line with the rest of the Champions and a fair balance given his other perks. Banner is now the only actual Hulk again and Cho is now known as Brawn. Coincidentally, this is also at the same time with Ironheart's new unique suit, Sam Alexander being stripped of his Nova status, and they're now grounded with their narrative focus being on stopping smaller crimes and personal growth. And just like that they aren't the dollar store cereal pretending to be name brand ones... they became their own separate heroes. The Champions aren't the new Avengers (or new New Avengers) and they never would at the pace they were going. Now they are what they should have been in the first place - a bunch of teenagers learning to be superheroes. Those little changes made them so much better and something that I actually enjoy reading.

Perhaps certain people were thinking of the wrong trope when they criticized Riri as a Mary Sue when maybe she was more of a Creators Pet (AKA The Wesley.) However, she ceased to be that once Bendis left the title and other creators like Jim Zub took over. Frankly, I just find Riri too boring to even give a second thought. Additionally, there are HUNDREDS of characters that Marvel created in decades past that now languish in obscurity (like the New Warriors, Power Pack, Slingers, Darkhawk, etc.) that may make an appearance once in a blue moon. There is really no real need to emotionally invest in her when she will likely fade away. And then there is the fact that RiRi came hot off the heels of "Captain Falcon" and Jane Foster Thor, which were controversial in themselves so she caught some heat from there.
@Nerwrax15
@Nerwrax15 5 лет назад
I doubt shes just gonna disappear even if she doesn't work out, she'll just remain on the Champions or even get shuffled back into the Iron Man series as a supporting character. Marvel has been pretty committed to keeping most of this current generation of young heroes around one way or another. Regardless of how people feel about Riri or the other young heroes, at least Marvel isn't completely giving up on em after some backlash, and still trying to make something work. Except Alpha, he was horrible.
@JunAoi

@Snoi Med replacing a long-time fan favorite/iconic character is always controversial. Falcon just happened to be the logical, obvious choice, but I am an old fart and I promise you back in the day, replacing Tony with Rhodey was not well taken either. Even though today the natural replacement to Tony is Rhodey (since he's done it a few times) and everyone is pretty much down with that. You could replace Wolverine with Wolverine (Jimmy) or Wolverine (Laura) or Superman with Superboy (his in-universe successor) or Jon (his actual son) or Chris (his adopted son) and people would find it controversial. This is one of those things that doesn't usually go over well except with B-List supervillains in general. Falcon just was a much easier pill to swallow, but it was still a pill to swallow (replacing Cap) for a lot of fans. Let's not forget the absolute hatred for Captain Hydra, even though it was plainly obvious that this was a storyline thing. Messing with Cap's presence in any way makes people iffy.

As a Miles Morales fan I love the exposure that Into the Spider-Verse is giving him. As someone who neither loves nor hates Riri Williams, I don’t get the extreme hate that was thrown at her when she had her introduction. I guess a lot of it comes down to them thinking that she was here to replace a popular character like Tony Stark, but this is comics outside of a few people death is never permanent and even then Bucky Barnes and Jason Todd came back after years of people saying that they were not going to. As for my favorites on the newer diverse characters they would have to be Miles Morales as Spider-Man, Jane Foster as Thor, and Khamala Khan as Ms Marvel, I don’t know if Gwenpool counts, but I love her too. I am also willing to give Riri Williams a chance in her new solo series since I hear good things about it too.
@katherinereed

I'm glad that you've explained more about Riri in this video since it helps me to understand who she is. I still think that the timing of the release, the pacing of the writing, or the way she was written is likely what hasn't helped people adjust to her yet. I haven't read the comics, but I do agree that it should either have been Rhodey's niece or someone Tony had significant interactions with who would have been taking over as Iron Man since Iron Man uses Tony's tech while Spiderman works with the powers from the bite. Rhodey's niece who didn't know Tony well makes as much Riri since depending on how close Tony and Rhodey were, Tony would have known about Rhodey's niece and may have trusted her to take over (this depends on how much time passed between Rhodey's death, the Civil War events, and Tony falling into a coma since I picture this as a backup protocol in case anything happens and could have changed with Rhodey's death). Even if Tony only knew about Rhodey's niece, Rhodey (if he was alive) could have still helped his niece depending on how similar the suits are. Although it seems like Riri's debut was poorly handled, it has the framework for a good story and character if handled carefully. My other point is that the clip you used to show why you were confused about people thinking that you thought Riri was really good was not the best way to show (at least without any additional context). I believe that you may have meant it in a way that showed that she was not all that great as a character, but it good still seem like you think that she is a really good character, but other additions were better or more enjoyable for you. It's DC comics rather than Marvel, but since I'm coming with mostly fan canon versions of the Robins(Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian), I would say that Tim Drake is my least favorite since he's the one I know the least about. Tim could be a really great character, but I haven't gotten enough information about him beyond the fanfiction ideas that he is extremely dependent on coffee, is the most detective like of the four, was the Robin who reminds Batman of who Batman was(based on the Batman is more violent after Jason's death), and is the co-CEO of Wayne Enterprises. That's based on fanfiction and not the actual comics/shows/movies, but is what I know of Tim. I feel like the other three seem distinct to me while Tim is just there. He's important and at least okay, but just there. However, I couldn't imagine him not being included in the stories I've read. Right now I feel similar about Riri, she's just there but could have been replaced with someone else who was already established (mostly because I haven't read the comics). I will say that since I'm getting the quick runs I won't try to say much about her Mary Sue-ness, but it seems like it comes from her not struggling because of her attitude and behaviors which is why she needed to be established as a person before or while becoming a major character. We've seen that Iron Man's flaws come back to hurt him in the end. He's arrogant/impulsive and reveals his address in Iron Man 3 (MCU), his house ends up blown up by the bad guys. He's bad at interacting with people, that's how his house ended up blown up. With Riri, it sounds like she has flaws and people don't address them in the stories. If they won't address the flaws, then it could make her feel like a Mary Sue. It would be like if there's a character who lies, who confessed that she may have lied about something, and everyone acts like the character who calls her out is the one who's in the wrong. (This seems to be happening in a show (or maybe fanfiction/both) that I've been watching. The person calling out the lies has other issues, but she's only called out when she's trying to prove that the liar is a liar and not when she's doing the concerning things. I wouldn't call the person a Mary Sue, but it could seem like she is one.)

I heavily support Riri and the Ironheart series mainly because Marvel gave her to an author who can actually represent her, a black woman from Chicago. I think it's the perfect fit to give Riri the best solo introduction and I love Ewing's work outside of comics as well. Of course I'm not saying a white person could never write Riri but if we want to get a true representation of Riri's life growing up and her academic life, it's best for now to turn to a black academic professor.

The push to put more diversity into the media, particularly with old properties like Star Wars, Marvel/DC, and many more, has been... at the very least interesting to watch unfold, for better and for worst. Personally, I think that quality needs to come before diversity. By that I mean that a story should be made with quality as the fore front. If the story is good, and has diverse characters, those diverse characters will be a plus, because having diversity in your cast could be a good way to make everyone distinct. Granted you need to make sure that they are more than JUST Black/Gay/Trans. If your diverse characters use the fact that they are diverse to improve the story, for commentary, for a character arc, or just being memorable, then the diversity is a asset to your story. To simplify, you should aim for a good story that happens to be diverse, than a diverse story above all else.

One Dixie Cup Just For You you just said that it’s a subjective opinion. Then stated that people can be wrong with a subjective opinion. If I like a character then to me they’re a ‘good’ character even if someone else doesn’t and vice-versa. The overall ‘good’ or ‘bad’ comes from the general consensus about the character. I’m positive someone somewhere thinks Rose from TLJ is a good character but the general consensus says otherwise thus she is a bad character. The same goes for literally everything people assign the labels of good/bad/evil to. Thus TL;DR people typically don’t rag on a good character they dislike because they wouldn’t dislike them as a character if they were a good character.

@@cratwinterz200 People can have wrong opinions. Your opinion is what you enjoy. Not what's good and what isn't. I can hate something that's incredibly popular and genuinely good, but that's because I don't enjoy it. Not because it's quality is actually lessened by my dislike for it. Having an opinion doesn't make something's quality subjective at all. It makes what you like and dislike subjective. That's what opinions are meant to be.

Hi Drake, Thank you for the follow-up; your first video was good and I'm grateful for the further detail. I can't imagine you've had a great online discussion regarding these two, so I can understand your trepidations. I just felt like mentioning that a lot of those "armchair critics" you mentioned who you correctly pointed out have themselves singled out character flaws within RiRi would readily agree with you that those parts of her could paint a more human picture for readers to grasp on to, but where I suspect you differ with them is that they have high doubt in that those chips will ever get cashed in by the current Marvel writing staff (based on recent writing trends at least). While you are correct that time will play a factor in her legacy, the doubters will maintain she is a Mary Sue because nothing about her less savoury side ever seems to receive a response/reflection within the world (or from her writer), as if, "Oh, that's just RiRi, you'll get used to her." The doubters doubt whether or not a writer will come along who can impart a self-awareness to her whole scenario. This is just my best faith interpretation of what people may have taken as empty gripes from the internet. I'm glad you still keep the door open to talk, Drake. Kind regards.

I don't hate Riri but there are some issues with her arc as a character. Personally I would have set the story in a future where Tony has been dead for several years. This would allow both the readers and the fictional characters to see a world with out Iron Man, then cheer as Rere chooses to take up then mantle on her own volition. Without the help of other heroes, allowing Rere to stand on her own as Tony's successor.

The issue is she's just a younger, black, smarter Tony Stark. There is nothing different about her other than her race, age, and intelligence. Miles has his OWN suit, his OWN powers, and his universe is filled with different villains. (yes they're the same villain, but they're VERY different not only gender wise, but also their backstories, and suits) RiRi Williams doesn't do anything new, she doesn't change her armor to be her own version, she doesn't have different suit purposes, hell pretty sure TonyStark is ALIVE in her comics, but just in a coma. Like...her story makes absolutely no sense. Tony Stark was able to build a small stark reactor in a cave, and is the worlds smartest man, saving earth from intergalactic threats, and yet there's a girl who...is randomly able to reverse engineer his latest tech at like half his age? It makes absolutely zero sense. If she did manage to reverse engineer that, okay cool, maybe she IS a kid genius but the blatant copy paste here you go, is what makes me mad personally. She doesn't do anything different, the suit design is basically the same thing. At least with Miles, sure the suit still has the core 'spiderman' look. But that shit WORKS because it's different while keeping to core values, along with adapting to the in universe changes. Shit, Wakanda had made different black panther suits, all slightly different, and at the time of two black panthers you could CLEARLY tell which was which based on very basic minute color changes. One was black with gold accents the other Black with silver/ purple accents. Miles is Black/Red, with different pants, a hoodie, and just a more modern flair. While Peter Parker is red/white in a body suit. Each Spiderman suit while it had core similarities, stayed different based on small changes. RiRi Williams is just female ironman. Peppers suit was uniquely Pepper, instead of Red/Gold it was Blue/White with a different shape (she's a woman) and had different attachments. It was a bad move to try to make a different tony stark, and not make any of it unique other than a gender twist, and a race twist.

This was great Drake. This video was way more put together than your last one. I like that you listed the flaws and some of the good of the characters in a more constructed way. I haven't read the new stuff of the new heroes there launcher but I think the writers or whoever incharge were impatient, if characters like riri were written better or even introduced as a sidekick before, people could develop an attachment to them. But they tried to force them right into the main hero role with little respect to the predecessor which would naturally make fans upset. Or they can just make brand new diverse hero and give them there own lines instead of replacing other established ones so easily or like you said use pre-existing diverse characters more.

Spider-Verse solidified Miles' place as a "Spider-Man." If Riri got similar treatment (like if they bring Riri in the MCU if Tony dies in Endgame) I think that might be one way to help her character out. Of course, if they bring Riri in the MCU, they need to do it the right way that respects the original but also distinguishes the character from her predecessor, aside from gender and race. They need to make Riri an actual character. While it'd be challenging, I think with the right writers and casting, they could essentially repeat the success of 2008's Iron Man

You make a valid point. There are no such things as bad characters, just bad writers. I can probably see many characters that may be considered bad to be reborn by a really good writer. Heck, Calender Man was not well liked when he came out. But now he's a creepy phycopath. And I also agree that diversity can be portrayed within stories, but attempting to replace characters that people already like is not a good idea. (Especially considering that there are characters you could use already.) And it's true that not all people like the same thing. So it's a good idea to have diversity at multiple angles. Not just one.

Genuine question here, as I've not read any comics in years, but does Riri have any serious consequences as a result of her flaws and mistakes? I'm in the camp where, it's not a basic "lack of flaw" that makes a character a MS, but it's much more about them getting away with things with nothing negative happening as a result. I've read a little of Mile's comics here and there, so I already know that he has that happen, as does Peter (AKA, the entire Uncle Ben thing), hence me only asking about her. Also side note, but I feel like part of why Mile's is more accepted has to do with him actually having some differences from Peter, including having unique powers.

I do agree Bendis did a few things wrong with Riri. I have enjoyed her charecter growth & knew she would never replace Tony. That she would be the one to find Tony. I did see her as sociopathic but instead someone who had autism. I have autism & have a hard time reading people's emotions as well as expressing them. I felt that connection to Riri. I loved when Riri joined the champions becuase it felt like she was finally growing. That Riri learned what types of threats face her if she stays a hero. But she moved forward with that. The special friendship she forms with Brawn (former totally awesome Hulk) and romantic sub plot with Viv. It's interesting to see how Riri handles interactions with other teen as friends. Like their school shooting special & you see how indifferent as well as angry she can be. Having lost so many people infront of her. But as the champions relaunched with a bigger team it starts to feel like they are a young justice clone & tackling bigger topics. One of them being how Riri feels about Viv. Riri seemed more mad Viv kissed her & is acting like it's normal. I'm guessing Riri isn't used LGBTQ charecters. That she might be interested in Viv or she doesn't know how to handle her friend who likes girls. It seems like Marvel is doing their famous not talking to each other about what's going on in other books. For instance Riri starts showing romantic interest in a boy she only has had a few interactions with. If you read the champions to it feels like she is running away from her gay thoughts or is trying remind herself she is straight. But reading them both it feels like they just don't talk to each other. Sorry for rambling

I liked Riri Williams, though it really seemed like Bendis timed her arrival bad. The first few appearances, the build-up was good, but then the Event happened, and the swap came so suddenly.Then again, that was part of the Theme. Riris story was one of "How the hell did I get here?" Tony was impressed by her reverse engineering his suit, and basically decided to tutor her, and...suddenly he's gone and she inherited the title of Iron Man, which she never wanted. And yet she had to DEFEND it against Doctor Doom!Her backstory was good, and I liked her tenure in the Iron Man comics, but it seemed too much like the new one having to fill shoes way too big for her. So once Tony was back, and she could join the Champions, her character had a way better chance to shine. That said, she's one of the few "Main Guy Replacements" I don't wish they had kept. Though I'm not really a fan of current Iron Man, the Character of Tony Stark is a bit too unique to replace. And if anything, Doom-Stark would have been better. No, if I could choose replacements to stay, I would have chosen Wolverine (Laura Kinney >>> Logan, and we would have kept Old Man Logan anyway), Thor (Jane Foster was an outstanding Thor! And we still had the Odinson) and maybe Sam Wilson as a second Cap (I loved his run. And his reappearance in Secret Empire was so satisfying!). The only returning character, who so far convinced me, his return was a good idea, was Bruce Banner.

If Brian Michael Bendis ever read this comment (fat chance XD), it would make my day: -Make you comic books bi-weekly or weekly (cause pacing for the trade can be tiresome and a pain in the ass of a wait if you do it monthly or , dare I say, bi-monthly). -Make your stories as ambitious as you can, but remember to respect continuity. -Don't be shy on asking people on how to improve your writing (especially your editors). IMHO, you can keep writing like this, I'm not against it, but these tips could improve it.

A lot of things you say show how Iron Heart is just another Iron Man. And that's my problem with Riri. She's just another Iron Man without as many flaws who didn't have to put in as much work, and was still great. One thing I like about her is how she's the reason Iron Man's Model Prime armor was created. Tony wanted to one up her because she was trying too hard to be like him so he stepped it up and made such a great suit.

I’m really glad we have a good movie that not only brings more attention to Miles but also it introduced a lot of people to him and more of established him as the new ultimate Spider-Man (aka the black Spider-Man). Honestly I didn’t even know there was a black Spider-Man until I heard of the movie. Now I freaking LOVE Miles Morales

Riri isn't my favorite, but I have grown to respect her more ever since she joined the Champions
