When I think of minimalist paintings the iconic example that comes to mind is a yellow and black seascape I once saw - done by - er - Syndia. Your problem with some of these paintings is your prejudice because you know you painted them. Some of the painting you show at about 12 mins are as good as your idolised reference artist. Down with prejudice ! -including yours. For landscapes without green look for the work of english watercolourist Edward Wesson (1910-1983). For textureless areas in landscapes and how to make it work look for British "Railway Poster" art. If the white spatters in your foreground aren't immediately read as flowers (what else could they be?) that's because its Minimalism - perhaps it does succeed. Believe in yourself.❤.

Well, Rik, you superstar you, firstly thank you 💙💙💙💙💙! David agrees with everything you wrote. And I'm always very interested and thankful for your insightful thoughts and your artist recommendations. I will look them up this weekend for sure. Hope you are well and inspired :o) And again, thanks for your kind words. I'll try to look at my own work with all that in mind ⭐

I could show them in a video, yeah. Just for your information these we all created in a series of video where I painted abstract landscapes from imagination. HI Syndia! ❤ I have a book called Color and Light by James Gurney. He says green has presented a perennial challenge to artists and and many have banished it from the palette. He has a few suggestions to solve the problem of green: Mix green from various blues and yellows to get what you want; Vary your mixtures of greens at the small scale (leaf to leaf) and large scale (tree to tree); Weave pink or reddish gray into your greens; and Prime the canvas with pinks or reds so they show through here and there to enliven the greens. Another thing I was thinking is that if you aren't in the mood to mix colors and would be open to another medium, I think soft pastels would lend themselves to minimalistic landscapes, and you can choose exactly the shade you want if you have a larger set of colors. Your videos are ALWAYS inspiring.

Hi Michele! Very very interesting, thanks so much for your advice. I like the idea if adding reddish grey to some greens as well as the pink underpainting which I have never tried. Thanks for being here 💛💛💛💛💛 Have a great week!

I think the secret of Igor paintings are in the values he chooses. I dont know if you've tried this before, but try to put on a black and white filter on his paintings and notice how the values works, it's very interesting.

How about using cell shading with just 2 flat colours in each area, or bring the 2 colours together with a stylistic dithering pattern. For example a dithering pattern in a tree would have literal (not realistic) leaves creating the gradient, rather than blending. Or for sea water, literal simplistic wave lines to bring the 2 colours together. Dithering creates the illusion of more colours being there than what there actually is. I personally feel that blended gradients lean closer to realism. But dithering would also make it more interesting. I use an online colour mixer to get close to the colour I need. Not a fan of the process either. You'll never get the exact same colour again.
@SyndiaArt

Hi David, I never explored dithering patterns in my work, something to look into for sure 👍 Have a good week

Keep going you will get there for sure ! I'm an Acrylic Artist & absolutely love working with them . My advice is choose 4 Colours like for instance 3 greens - DARK GREEN - MEDIUM TONE GREEN & a LIGHT GREEN and ADD WHITE when need be to TONE down serton areas of Colour. This way your not using Super dark colours by using black ...Instead of using black just use your darkest GREEN as your Darkest colour and work from THAT colour to TONE down using WHITE to tone colour down ....Also have you ever tried using GOLDEN HIGH FLOW acrylic paint? Really nice to work with nice flat finish with them . Another trick is Find a picture you like on your phone & change the Picture contrast in phone gallery app on your phone to mute down colours and try different settings to mute picture down ...I find this sometimes helps when you struggle with colour mixing . Any how's keep up your great work I super Enjoy your Channel and look forward to watching your Art journey & also not to forget Seeing David and your Adorable Dogs 😊 Keep safe & keep creating 🙏 🖌🎨

Hey arty sistah! I really enjoyed this video.Those photos/videos are so lovely…oodles of paintings in there. Oh and your birds painting is awesome…seems like you got there when you relaxed. Yay for getting to a good place w/paint mixing 💪 I was going to suggest Flashe paint by Lefranc Bourgeois. They have some very lovely muted, desaturated colors you may like, Blick has them if you wanna look. But I highly endorse your own mixing, for color harmony. I’m on a parallel journey [in my head at least] trying to find that sweet spot on the abstract to realism scale. I like your journal…great tool. As a scientist in my previous life, I tend to approach even my art process in a very analytical way. I liked how you made several paintings to work on at once. I think I’m gonna get out the scissors & hack mine into painting elements so I can switch them out to see what I like & don’t like. Sky, horizon, middle ground & foreground. A painting puzzle? May be a mess 😛but sounds fun. I would be sure to take notes of the things out like & don’t like & why. You may be able to see a trend. Hang in there, I have faith in you…just take your time. Think of it as a long term project. Evolution doesn’t happen overnight. 💜💜💜

Hi Syndia ... singing David ... Lake and LENNOX... ❤ I absolutely loved watching your process - through all of it. I have to disagree with you on some of the ones you called a previous "fail"... They may not have been what you wanted or what you were aiming for, but some of them came out really nice. Take a look at some of them again later - and maybe think about cropping some - and maybe adding just one or two details or focus points to the others and they may turn into something you're more satisfied with. The one based on a scaled up oil pastel -- that one seemed to me to have the wrong proportions when you scaled it. The sky grew larger, but the bottom did not. If you take a pic on your phone of the both of them and set them at the same scale, you might see what I'm talking about. Anyway, I just wanted to say I really enjoyed the video and and being able to see into your process.

Hi there, so nice to read you again! You are SO right about the proportions of the square painting and the sky. I had not seen it and scaling it down to compare it to the small one is genius! It never crossed my mind, haha, thank you! 💛💛💛💛💛 Thanks for being here, have a lovely week ahead :o)

As always love your stuff! ❤ The painting at abt the 5 min mark, There’s a big difference between your sketches and the large one at the point where the sky’s saturation begins. It’s more saturated closer to the ground in more of a line kind of 2/3rds of the sky while in the larger one it’s a very smooth even gradient from the ground to the top of the canvas. It looses the proportions that draws your eye to the lovely minimalistic ground you have going. Try bringing the saturation of the sky about halfway down the painting. Just my quick take maybe it can help.

😊😊😊❤️❤️ loved watching this and seeing you r process and trying variations. My fav has to be the one with white splatters on the bottom. The strokes of different shades of green are just enough to show difference but not changing the field colour too much. I think that painting has life, interest, and it is light handed to feel minimal. Have fun on your journey to master minimalism.

I have watched soooo many of your videos... Like A LOT, and this one is my favorite. So heartfelt, so genuine, I found myself feeling very relax while listening to your thought process. And I was pleasantly surprised cause I suffer from an anxiety disorder and panic attacks, and most of the time I just can't finish a video if the person is speaking for too long, but somehow you managed to calm me down. Weird. 😅 Best of luck on your quest!!! 🥰 And btw, the ones that I liked the most are the one with the cream/yellow specs and the one with the white flowers.

❤Fascinated to hear your process! I’ve been working on abstract landscapes and trying to keep the compositions simplified. So much harder than it might seem. Have found that painting a base layer, an under painting (burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw sienna) gives a simple piece a lot more depth. Also, loved the pieces you flipped through at around 12 min mark. Striking!
