I am from Iraq .. and I do not understand much of what you say because my English is not strong .. but I admire your style .. (I used the translator to write)
I completely understand your point about enjoying the hobby as a minimalist. I personally have been in the hobby both SWL and ham for about 50 years and can say my happiest days were running very simple stations and seeing the best I could do with them. I have accumulated TONS of equipment through the years including some of the best general coverage receivers and ham transceivers and can tell you I probably enjoy running extreme low power QRP under 100mw more than just about anything. It doesn't get any more minimal than that for ham radio. I personally like your little set up completely understand your way of operation! All the best my friend.
@ 00:51 : It does not take very long to get it that way! Believe me! That is the only problem with that type of hobby! lol! Otherwise, it is great fun! ……..I had a friend a few years ago that had a two (2) story house completely full of that type of stuff! ( 6 rooms on each floor). His home was at another place! 😊
Perfect pandemic lock down hobby - love the style of the old radios - in a digital world, i find myself increasingly drawn to the analog stuff. Thx for the high quality content - keep up the good work
LOL Tom ... my favorite part of the video was what you said at 6:08 and how you said it ... and the way you gently leaned into the camera. Well done my friend. Greg KJ6ER
Collecting radios is certainly a much cheaper hobby than collecting cars or women. I have every thing from Kenwood R-5000 to a GE Superadio (like yours) that I paid $10 for at a flea market 25 years ago. The Superadio is one of my favorites. Also have a Grundig YB-400 and a Sony ICF-2010, among others. And believe it or not my daily driver is a little Sony ICF-M350V - it's a great little digital that has great reception and surprisingly good sound quality from the 2 1/2 inch speaker. (I actually own two!) $20 each on Ebay. I agree on your philosophy - keep your wife close, but your electronic equipment closer.
Hi Tom, I don't know about you, but I have a few radios which all cover the same short wave frequencies but some work better at lower bands and some better at higher, and some work better in bad weather... love the channel by the way, cheers
@ 01:44 That would last that way for me until about midnight the first day! lol! ….. You should have seen mine when I still had my stand alone building for a radio cave! lol! Unfortunately, the building got destroyed and I am having to start again with my hobby! When it gets interesting, I might show it off! 😊

Hi Ron...thanks for the invite. I'd love to stop by and check out your stuff. Unfortunately, I'm not in your neck of the woods too often...but I'll keep that in mind. You never know...
One day when I finally own a modest fixer upper I plan on making an outdoor one man chill shack six feet off the ground with a skylight and a simple extension cord to the main house. I will fill it with a few good radios, books, guitar, some cheap but good whisky like teachers brand, with just enough insulation to drown out my bad attempts at singing.
I think all the radios that appear on the shelf put me back less than $200, over a 20 year period. As far as hobbies go, that's pretty cheap! Thanks for the comment!
I’ve been dropping in on you for a couple of months now and I can completely identify with you on how you feel about the experience... I too am very nostalgic about my childhood listening... underneath the bedclothes tuning into foreign language stations I couldn’t understand... so thank you for bringing some of those happy memories back 😊 If you or any of your followers could recommend a not too expensive radio that I could buy for AM and shortwave, I would be most grateful.
Tom, Love your videos. I tend to share many of your same feelings on practicality, simplicity and subtle enjoyment of the listening hobby, to which I am a newbie..... Keep them coming and Thx.
Beautiful setup, Tom. I’m envious. I have a similar preference for a certain type of radio-room ambience that has its roots in my earliest experiences making DX discoveries in my dimly lit room as a kid. I suspect that, like me, you feel the allure of the hobby strongest during the holiday season. Looking forward to more great videos.
Minimalism and mood lighting is good in this hobby. I have only four main radios but I find that I will concentrate on one of them for a week and move on to the next one. It keeps you sharp on the various functions and settings of each radio.
