I agree with so many of the comments here, I had so many issues with a 'quality' car main dealer that I refuse to go there ever again. Issues like returning my car to me after a service with a cracked windscreen and not saying anything about it. Admittedly the crack had propagated from pre-existing heavy stone impact, but not to say anything, I think was inexcusable. On collection, I was kept waiting until after 6pm (when they close), so that all the service staff rats could escape without having to face me and explain themselves, utterly despicable behaviour.

My 2016 RRS was due a service in September and I just couldn't bear to take it to a main dealer. Last year's service was costed at £900 but luckily I didn't have to pay that as I did a deal when I bought the car for the first service free. The owner of my local garage is a long time Land Rover owner so I got him to do it and it was less than £300. I'm convinced that 2/3 of the main dealer service charge goes to paying for their swanky showrooms and the multitude of staff that appear to aimlessly walk about doing absolutely nothing useful.

I have had the opposite experience in Western Australia. Recently I have started to have my land rovers serviced by a small company called Rovertech and what Kevin does not know about Land Rover faults and problems is not worth knowing. As part of the service his staff will check the whole vehicle out and contact you if any repairs need doing. I have known him for over 30 years and has been helpful to the extent of giving me second hand parts for free just to help out. He is booked up for months in advance.

@Rubber Thingy unfortunately a fully-main-dealer-stamped service book is still seen as essential at trade-in for a lot of cars. I owned one of the original Audi RS4’s for 11 years and used to take a bottle of Mobil1 to the main dealer with an instruction to supply a filter, change the oil and stamp the book. Everything else was either done by me or a model specialist. Maintaining dealer contact also seems to influence how deep the pockets of goodwill gestures go if an out-of-warranty issue arises.

I know it seems counterintuitive but I always take my old Yeti to my local "back street" garage because it suddenly dawned on me, a few years ago, that the main dealers seem to be staffed by young kids who (whilst I'm sure they're perfectly intelligent and hard working) can't possible have the experience of the oil soaked fella that I use who has run his own business for around 30 years and has a loyal customer base! Have a good new year! 😁

Hi Matt, funnily enough I took my Jag F-type to Land Rover Jaguar in Stockport to ask them about sorting the side bolster on my drivers side. After keeping me there for over an hour they came to me and said unfortunately it needed a new seat. I rang the garage that I purchased my car from GC motors in Harrogate and what a completely different attitude. They were professional and got the seat sorted within 3 hours at no charge !! They were superb and I got to have lunch at Betty’s tearoom. I can certainly recommend GC motors for your high quality motor and for the service they provide !!! I had a real sense of deja vu watching this. A few years ago I took my Discovery 3 into the Land Rover main dealer in Southampton for a service. I'd previously spent a fortune on it there. A few days and only about 30 miles later, I checked the oil, and it was filthy black. It clearly hadn't been changed in the service. I pointed this out to the dealer - no big deal; just change it now. But the manager insisted that couldn't possibly have happened and I was making it up. Having worked in a garage myself, I know things get missed, and there was the evidence! But no, what did I know? So I went away pretty cheesed off, and haven't been back there since. So they lost a customer - and I was thinking about buying a new Range Rover too - but they'll never know why. All for a bit of labour and a few litres of oil. Talk about rotten service.

The problem is that too many people don't care at all about the bigger picture. They just want to get one over on someone else all the time. It is a sign of weakness and lack of dignity but people don't seem to realise that or just don't care. Not sure what causes it but maybe just a general decline in trust, morale and self respect.
@doctor8507
@doctor8507 2 года назад
I think personally one of the the things they would do is change the oil and filter and perhaps skirt around the rest of the vehicle, kick the tyres etc... it's common knowledge (on the 3.0L D4's) that with these suction pumps there is bound to be +/-200mls left in the base of the sump plus whatever oil is still lurking around the cooler so with putting in the new oil it is not very uncommon to check the oil after service and find it black, sadly if you want a clean looking oil after a service buy the petrol models. Diesels are dirty running engines with an amazing amount of soot build up especially those over the 50,000 mile mark. Having said this nothing is impossible and maybe the tech had diarrhea on that particular day... sorry about your experience.

Good rant! Good Customer Service is rare these days and it's so frustrating! Garages terrify me, especially when they don't have a clue what they are doing. I have a low mileage year 2000 E38, BMW 740 which blew the radiator back in 2017. I took it to a new garage in the new area where I'd just moved to and they replaced the radiator. A few days later my car started displaying all sorts of confusing messages about coolant level. I took it back to the garage and they told me that the head gasket had gone and it would cost £3,000 to get it done. The AA guy who had rescued me by the roadside had warned me about anyone telling me that the head gasket is dead since the car had not overheated. I decided to take my car home and took it back to my old garage where I used to live. They told me that the problem was that the car had not been bled properly. They charged me £60 for labour. No problems ever since and according to that clueless garage cowboys my car is still running with a bad head gasket. The car has done about 63K miles now and still going strong 😂.

Amazing...I'm watching this in Kenya, and have worked as GM for Mercedes Benz and Subaru, i would have thought things would be vastly different in your neck of woods. But, i agree with you, we don't train "mechanics" anymore, what we train are "techies" who can't think further than tying their own shoelaces if the diagnostic machine doesn't tell them EXACTLY what the issue is. That bit about formal dealerships giving you back a dirty car would however entail a firing of someone in this part of the world. How i overcame this issue was by spending a little extra money to beef up the admin and appointing quality controllers, who follow the car's progress from the time it's received to the time of delivery and who stand separate from the service advisors.

As far as “independents are better..” it doesn’t quite work out. Main dealers will always be the first and sometimes only source of up to date software updates, patches etc, as well as the fact that most will offer a good will contribution even when the vehicle is out of warranty. Find a good main dealer, don’t just assume because its franchised it’ll be top notch. 👍🏻

They do stuff like free diagnostics (when they should be charging me 50 quid), and they have wavered other charges a penny pinching branch manager might lighten my wallet for. I worked at BMW in Oxford for a while, it seems to me that the issue is the owners/service managers just wanna squeeze in as many cars as possible per day to maximise profits so anything that is not straightforward just becomes an inconvenience to them, which is not how the customer should be seen

Been using a local garage of experienced mechanics who work on everything, for years. They are an MOT garage so standards are high. Totally reliable friendly and trustworthy. They order in service packs or any other parts when required and often will say, that doesn’t need doing for another 3000 miles or so or some such observation. Never trying to inflate the bill, to the contrary. They have a lot of regular repeat customers. Great vid Matt.

Morning Matt, fully agree. I've found a great little garage that goes above what is expected of them. Only been to collect a part from my closest land rover dealer, hated the experience, I felt like a piece of dirt that they wanted to get rid of quickly. Can I just ask while I'm writing please over the pressure of your wheels. Mine are the same ones as yours, but they don't look as full as yours on the photo. Many thanks.

One and only time I contact a Jag dealership was so they could work out what locking wheelnut key I needed for my S-Type, since I lost mine.... "It'll cost you £150 to come down and get the locking nuts off if we have the key, but we don't have a full set of keys. If we haven't got the right one it'll cost you £400". I'd even taken a mould of my locking nut with plastecine in a johnny and drew up the pattern, but they couldn't handle the drawing! So I lucked it on a random one on eBay for £15 and got the dremmel out.

You are totally correct - we all feel that you should get superior service at a LR dealer, but I had the same thing last month with a coolant level warning in my 2010 RR Sport - paid over £200 for investigation which found nothing after a pressure test - the light came back on within about 10 minutes of driving away - I did some YT research myself, learnt about the issue with the level sensor on the exp tank, booked it in to be done, and issue now solved. So like your experience, it seems we now have to diagnose our own solutions and tell them what to do at vast expense.

Years ago we had mechanics - now we have parts replacers, who do not know about cars. A few years back I had an on and off issue with the diesel pump and the car went into default mode after a mile or two. I figured out the issue was there in wet weather -so moisture must be shortcutting somewhere. I looked at the pluck to the diesel pump and saw that it maybe could be the connection between the wire and the pluck. I put a small dot of silicone on there and I haven't had the issue since. I guess I saved myself for thousands of pounds.

My friends RR SVR went in to service in a London branch, but before he left it he made a video of the condition of the car as it was literally still showroom condition. He had the SVR steering wheel with l.e.d flashing stuffs on it and brand vortex alloys over 2k on it. When he picked it up he found the alloy chunk missing and the steering led cracked and a ting on the door. They didn't even say anything to him, but he noticed it went straight over to the manager and show his video, the manager obviously had no choice but to accept liability, had it wasn't for the evidence they would have denied it, it's shocking. But the alloy they can only refurb but by doing so they'll get rid of the tiny vortex writing on the rim. So my mate is demanding a new alloy.

Main stealers (sic) not just High end ones described but, like you mentioned, good service is the exception and leaves one surprised. I had a Renault dealer, Shelbourne look at spongy brakes after a rear caliper change by an independent garage. I was told it'd be put on the Renault clip to run ABS bleeding (brake fluid reservoir had let air in I told them). I said pedal method was done several times to no avail and for them to apply constant brake fluid under 20psi to the reservoir which I also was told would be the case if they couldn't solve this. Collected car and two technicians just did pedal method and said it was fine Not happy I took it for a run then and said it's not fixed. A message was sent to the technician who I spoke to before I took it out for teat run. He sent a message that several hours diags and brake pipes would need replacing!! Took to local garage, the pads and rear discs were shot and a brake specialist he uses bled the whole system. Issue sorted. The advent of electric cars will mean more bull from disinterested, overpriced chancers as inde garages will not have software or licence to work on these cars. The winner will be main dealers selling and repairing these cars. Rant over 😁
