Janet’s ‘Control’ album had a lot of feminist undertones that had influence on the kids of the time and female empowerment. You should check out You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrisette. Dave Navarro from the Red Hot Chili Peppers plays guitar on the track. I used to practice this routine back when this video was out. I was about 13-14 at the time. To answer you’re question, Janet was about 20-21 when this video came out. And she moved from Gary to Los Angeles when she was VERY young (Like about 5 or 6). So she actually grew up more so in Cali.
