My Response to Commander's Quarters "Worst Magic News Ever?" 

You’re quickly ascending the ranks of MTG creators for me. I went from indifferent about the UB stuff to genuinely being stoked for them. I’m not into Fallout but I’m most curious with what they do with that set. Hell. The Doctor Who stuff straight up got me watching doctor who again ahah.

I'm with you. In fact, I'll take it one step further and say that I like the UB stuff more than the regular Magic universe. I've been way more excited about Warhammer, LotR and Fallout than any other products they have done while I've been playing. I think two full UB sets a year is pretty ridiculous, though. I'd prefer to see commander sets like 40k and fallout every other year and a set like lotr in-between those years. I don't endorse big corporations and profits above all, but what is Hasbro supposed to do? Mitch even says that Hasbro has all of these failing entities and everyone on youtube seems to revel in their failings... but the game all of these creators purport to love and hold in such high regard, is attached to that "sinking ship." So, what's the alternative? Hasbro fails and drags down MTG and it dies? They sell it off to some benevolent company that prioritizes the things these creators want? Yeah, well, that will never happen. Hey Mitch, strap in and enjoy your new viewers, you know, the viewers these IPs pull into the community that you will benefit from.

Hard agree with this video🤙 I have a hard time understanding the argument that an increase in commanders being printed is a bad thing. EDH is all about personal expression and creativity, so the more options I have, the better. We used to see the same top 20 'best' commanders ALL the time and it got stale. I LOVE that I often sit down at a table against 3 commanders I've never seen in play before. I also think it's absolutely wild to be upset about a game that exists in a *magical multiverse* branching into other IPs that don't "feel like Magic". Like. That's the strongest thing Magic has going for it. Every year we explore a new wacky wild world!! This game is more positioned for crossover potential than pretty much any other game ever. One thing I disagree with you on, however, is that powercreep at the level we're seeing is unavoidable. Obviously a little bit here and there is unavoidable, but holy moly Ragavan has come a long way from Jackal Pup. We don't need grossly powercrept cards to keep players interested and buying cards, creative and unique new designs do that. I've always found Mitch to be exhaustingly pessimistic and I love seeing you call him out in such a well thought out manner

Really like these reaction videos. Plenty of content creators sometimes get ahead of themselves with certain topics and opinions. Totally fine since you discuss it on your own platform, but other creators breaking down these points in a respectful way is healthy for the community overall.

I will be the first to admit I am not a Mitch fan, I may have biases against him. With that being said I hate that he kept on pointing to Lord of the Rings as a problem, it sounds like he missed the point that Lord of the Rings was supposed to be a Modern Horizons like set, did he complain about the bull that was the crap in those sets. I have a lot of thoughts about magic, but most of my thoughts about universes beyond can be narrowed down to wait and see, if the cards do the IP justice and are not a super limited I.e. Walking Dead secret lair I have absolutely no problem with any of it, even the product fatigue.

None of universes beyond funds Wizards of the Coast. It just goes towards the rotting corpse, that is Hasbros' failing departments.

A much better alternative to voting with your wallet would be to make a new format that just like Commander but bans all Universes Beyond cards. We could call it Captain or something.....

I personally hate UB stuff but dont mind if there is in universe versions, issue is hasbro has been awful at making those happen. so its def a shame...

Also, do you work in healthcare? I never hear “Statistical and clinical significance” used by anyone outside of healthcare…I’m a pharmacist 😂

I've not watched the video yet but... Have you all taken into consideration the fact that Mitch is no longer a content creator but a click bait machine?

Whats interesting for me is the discourse surroundong the dislike of UB is almost exclusively complaints about LTR, a set that is just Modern Horizons 2.5. It was released within the normal window for draft innovation sets in the past, and has a pile of mechanically unique cards that are as good as something like Archon of Cruelty and Fury, just a tenth of a step up from those cards. The 'problem' (if we can even call it that) is that the power creep that ruins lesser games is just... visible now. The fact that magic is decades old now means that anyone who lost to the one ring last week can point to staff of nin and say "man, remember when magic was just magic?" And i dont think theres any point in giving those kinds of discussions more space than they've already carved out for themselves. On a more general note, remember when you were a kid and you mixed your toys together? 20 years ago if you told me a game like Fortnite would exist i would be bouncing around the room like a toddler on meth. Now that we're adults, we have more context surrounding what it takes to make those crossovers happen, and we're poisoning the well for people by complaining that the mega corporations that exist to make a profitable enterprise are doing the thing. Magic has always been whatever its players make it. I can sympathise with the tournament grinder who's format has been rocked by a premium set, or the content creator who has to juggle 10+ content releases a year. But at the same time, I empathise with the person who has walked by Magic at a department store and been intrigued, but it wasnt until they saw a familiar IP on a commander deck that they finally pull the trigger, get introduced to the game and the concept of local game stores, and finds a niche and a social life within a weekly commander pod. If we focus on the Gathering, the Magic will literally be the memories we make along the way. Let people enjoy things.

It is hard to vote with your wallet when your play group all now has a new powered up UB deck. I don't think it is wrong to have a "pure" game. I think the main argument Mitch is trying to put out is that he loves the MTG universe. A limited amount of UB is fine. A few alt cards or a limited promo release is fine. The issue is when you have more UB content than original content. You can call it product fatigue but we all love new content. New shiny pretty cards make us happy. I think this is just the most visible issue with MTG right now. Can we get new universes in MTG? We love the story. We love the worlds and characters that have come to life.

People still follow/watch Mitch’s stuff? Yikes.

Mitch lost all creditability a few years ago when he went on his baby rant over the walking dead.

I'm leaning more towards Mitch on this one. The saturation of busted cards and ridiculously out of place UB sets is getting to be a bit much. The One Ring was the last straw for me. That card is absolutely busted and the fact it exists is a total money grab from WotC. I'm not saying the sky is falling and I'm not against UB on principle, I just think it's got to be a bit much. In a format that already has so much stuff to keep track of, printing one-off mechanics like Ring Tempting and Venturing Into the Dungeon is a bit annoying. Not to mention printing a literal lottery ticket into the LotR set, meaning that every single casual table now has to deal with The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters warping the format.

I really tried to give this video a fair shake, Ironically coming into it with an 'open mind'. Your point about Mitch coming into the discussion with a negative mindset, not being open-minded, and not allowing more time to elapse is absurd. We live in a world where I can use my Fortnite land to pay for a 40k space marine to shoot Merry and Pippin to death, and I dont like it. But something like this happens in 90% of my games. Magic used to have a cohesive narrative, which we explored through deckbuilding and gameplay as well as stories. Just wanted you to know this wasn't a reflexive dislike for the video. I genuinely dislike this.
