... i am always the person having the removal spell in my playgroup. I run between 15 and 20 interaction pieces in most of my decks.. which is quite a lot. My friends always answered: I play so much removal but I just don't draw it. When I asked one of them, if I could peak through their decklist I found out that they run: 4 spells in their Bant color deck. Arcane Denial, Beast Within, Generous Gift, and Path to Exile.
It's a case where you need to either "Don't put all your eggs in one basket," or "Put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket." You either have to fully commit to commander protection, or you need to diversify.
I recently returned to commander and I've made a point of leaving infinite combos and seemingly unfair degeneracy out of my decks. I have all the cards on hand to build Memnarch for example, but I know that's probably one of the meanest mono-blue decks I could make. Also, just winning each game the same way over and over is boring.
I think the pod you play with really impacts this decision. Also, I personally don't mind losing to make unique builds or play weaker synergistic decks. No one plays Cedh decks in my pod so it works out. I started to add the classic bnb cards to My decks and the game did start to feel very repetitive.
Really wish I could do something like this, but my preferred LGS closed down and the backup is a commercial gamestore wih no bulk boxes ☹ Enjoyed the Vid tho, got a chance to live vicariously through y'all😀
I like a lot this commander too..I think u are low on protection for Eriette and too manu Auras. All those auras on opponents creatures (to gain the commander´s value) are dangerous without the commander. I think is better to have more protection to the commander. Teferis Pro is good but cuts the triggered efects of auras attached to opponents creatures.
I recently made a bant stompy, which is a new play style for me. I entirely designed it without a commander in mind. It's a totally different vibe than my previous decks. Very fun to make and very fun to play. It now uses Ellie and Alan, Paleontologists just as a backup way to rebuild after board wipes. Definitely recommend taking that approach in a deck, it's a fun way to make a deck.
Quite honestly, I'm more curious how you manage to afford your... life. Homie got an entire hobby room and built 100 100 card MTG decks (and NOT PDH), and looks 27 (+/- 4) yrs old. Silver spoon, Silver tongue, or silver Job?
Self made. Busted my butt in college to get my Masters which I paid for by myself, bought a house in 21 that was a wreck occupied by squatters. Redid the entire thing myself over the past 3 years, I couldn't afford to hire out. I had to shower in a planet fitness for over a year before I finally had good running water and an actual shower. It wasn't until the house was in a good place that I finally started to dip my toes into hobbies like this. Looks can be deceiving for sure, but it took a lot of struggle to get here. And yes, I am 27. I just knew what I wanted and went for it head first, tons of mistakes along the way of course, but I'd say I'm better for it.
I opened this commander randomly and wanted to try it, but all the normal play patterns were annoying and not my playstyle. This, though, might be worth giving a shot.
I decided to pull the trigger on this Commander after trying to rebuild my Yuriko deck to something more fun. Would you be able to recommend higher budget list?
I feel like this deck would be able to benefit from Brudiclad as a finisher to close out games by turning your small 1/1 tokens into larger things like the 8/8s from ominous seas.
There are some commanders that just provide innate value from the command zone and don't require much (or any) investment to enable them which allows you to build the deck in any direction you want. Some examples: Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar or a Breena, the Demagogue will draw you some extra cards from attacking MacCready, Lamplight Mayor will continuously drain your opponents Talion, the Kindly Lord draws you extra cards and drains your opponents Katilda, Dawnhart Prime or Radha, Heir to Keld are guaranteed ramp on 2 Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle is guaranteed ramp on 4 Yasharn, Implacable Earth is a decent stax piece that draws you 2 lands Ertai Resurrected is an on-demand interaction
There are so many baffling design decisions about Nadu, but the part that I find to be uniquely galling is that it doesn't even draw cards. If it did draw cards, then it would actually create much more interesting interactions, because Sheoldred or Bowmasters or Fate Unraveler blank them, a flashed Notion Thief blanks them for a turn. Maybe that's niche but at least there are things to interact with drawing cards. Making it so that you just put the cards into your hand instead for literally no reason other than to make it better is disgusting.
I always cringe when, some of the MTG youtubers who obviously know game very well, focus mostly on what absurd combo deck can deck theoretically execute, while ignoring more mundane issues. As many people mentioned this is monolithic commander with 5 CMC, which unless we have more clash cards in hand, will only trigger in the next turn after being casted. To make this work, a good amount of recursion and counter spells needs to be included, which unfortunately will be very cheap and will hinder decks game plan, even more than they would in any other deck. It would be also good to have more than 15 life once commander is in play, which may be difficult, without cheaper blockers to play. Even though the mechanic is interesting, I'm afraid that this will be another deck which will do nothing for 6-7 turns and either win in explosive way or be eliminated after that.
After some testing, I realized that clash just isn't that good. On paper, our deck is much better than any other in winning the clash, but in reality, still usually half of the deck will consist of lands and low mana value cards, so it's very likely that many swings with commander won't add any value. Also Auton Soldier isn't instant win like almost shown here, as you can just hit land, which will stay on top of the deck for both clashes - still great combo, but it's good to take into account how many clashes will be lost.
I don’t get salty myself when it comes to any TCG. I think part of playing any game is offering a fun experience for all those involved. Part of that is winning humbly and losing gracefully. I don’t think you could be a complete winner by being a great player alone, but by offering your opponent, a good experience. However, I’m glad you shared your story. I’ve played with people like this before and it’s awful. Like imagine playing a game for over an hour and one of the players has a meltdown. I’d never play with that stranger again, and I would definitely cook my friend for acting like that.
Really cool decklist! Brewing a Necrobloom right now and you brought some really unique and fun cards I would never have thought of otherwise. Love your explanations and energy as well
Really great video and discussion! My Xyris deck is my favorite one to run. My flavor/spin on it is that it’s polymorph focused. It’s purposely scaled to that 7-8 range power level, but I always have difficulty in straying the line between casual and cute, and just completely one side dominating.
Absolutely recommended this deck. I have done a lot of updating and still have more to do. Winning a lot of games with this deck. Pyrogoyf is absolutely ridiculous and is a huge threat.
I had a feeling Xyris and Ovika the boatfull of goblins were going straight to the top tier. I swear if Ovika survives a whole rotation, you have about a 80% of winning.
I definitely have been wanting to build this commander. But i've been struggling because it is VERY easy to get distracted by Maskwood Nexus and start thinking too big when instead you focus on recycling the core monsters over and over for repeated value rather than lucky spike turn value. That said, what about Morality Shift as a win con?
I was a little skeptical of the high creature count, but I gotta say it’s is a well constructed deck. I’d work in Teferis Protection if it’s not already there, I can’t remember if it’s there or not. Karametra rewarding you for just playing lands is hard to stop once it gets going lol
