This makes so much sense. My mother never had trouble with her weight. She eats breakfast, a tiny lunch, and a small dinner and nothing after 6pm. NOTHING. And she never snacks at all, not even gum or candy. She wouldn't even think to do so. She is 94 and still very active and slim.

I fully agree with your observation of obesity being linked to constant food availability. At 72 I think back to growing up in the 50's and 60's. Although one occasionally would see significantly overweight people, it wasn't nearly on the scale that is observed today. But then we didn't eat in cars, there were no cup holders in cars (golly, we didn't even have seat belts!), it was considered gauche to be walking down the street eating, one certainly didn't see children eating in church in order to quiet them. As Americans we've adopted a very bad habit of always putting something in our mouths. Not good for the waistline or our oral health. And closing the kitchen after dinner is excellent. If one is prowling for food 3 hours later, perhaps it's time to go to bed.

I find this fascinating. Growing up, my mom made three meals a day. We ate breakfast before heading out to school, purchased or brought a lunch for school, and then had a very nice dinner around the time my dad got home from work. After that, the kitchen was cleaned up, the lights turned off, and no one went into the kitchen again until morning. I look back on that and am in wonder. We often snack after dinner in our home now and I can't figure out how things changed. Even when I was single and living on my own, I ate dinner and then didn't think about eating again until the morning. Wow! How did I even do that??? I think, for me, the change took place with my first pregnancy when I found myself ravenously hungry 24/7. After my children were born, I just felt hungry constantly and never returned to my old habits. I'm going to try to implement this idea because, clearly, it is possible - I did it the entire time I was growing up and was a young adult. Thanks for the reminder!

Now, the 3 younger kids still live at home and the kitchen always seems to be open. My parents also really wish to lose weight. It’s definitely correlated

As a Mom of 5, my practical reason for closing the kitchen is that I don’t want to follow my kids all day long cleaning up messes in the kitchen. They get an after-school snack and a bedtime snack (teenage boys…). I feel that is reasonable. But no mindless cracker-grabbing at 10am!

IF has really worked me and I've been able to maintain the weight loss. One thing that's helped me when I do occasionally feel hungry outside of my eating window is that I think "oh I'm probably burning stored calories now." That seems to put things in perspective for me. I look forward to the meals in my eating window and really enjoy them.

I used to obsess over food and how much I'd had to eat in a day. It got to the point that I had to see a intuitive eating nutritionist to help me manage my thoughts and relationship around food. The help was okay and the first step for me but it was really intermittent fasting that that got rid of that obsessiveness. I found that I don't have to worry about what I eat anymore and it's such a relief. I'm losing weight, eat better than ever, don't obsess, and developed a much healthier relationship with my body and food. The concept of the kitchen being closed it really smart and something I will use to help me as I continue with my intermittent fasting.

I lost a lot of weight when we moved to France 8 years ago - a combination of not being near town, not eating out, and not snacking between meals. I have managed to keep in a healthy weight range since, partly because I have a health condition that requires me to do so. Unfortunately, fast food has come to France, and with it, less healthy eating habits, and more overweight people.

I am the same way. My blood sugar will crash to dangerous levels overnight if I do not have a substantial snack at bedtime. We figured that out with a glucometer that is worn continuously for two weeks. I eat a fairly healthy and macro-balanced diet throughout the day and generally avoid snacking, but I’m sad that I can’t ‘close the kitchen’ after dinner. Have you tried increasing the amount of protein & fat in your last meal? I do not have diabetes but I am hypoglycemic & had gestational diabetes when pregnant. I used to NEED to snack and NEED to carry food to raise my sugars because I would constantly crash but by cutting carbs and increasing protein & healthy fats I have been able to nearly stop those sugar crashes (I will still get them if I consume carbs and/or sugar without protein). Might be worth trying if you haven’t yet.

All food items are behind a closed pantry door. I so wish I’d understood the benefits of IF years ago. In the past 2+ years I’ve lost 50 lbs, began daily exercise, and enjoy many benefits of this lifestyle. I do not subscribe to any extreme methods, it’s just 3 meals per day on a 16-8 plan. Hi Jennifer, I have struggled on and off with always wanting some cereal about 9-10pm. I am really trying to stop this now and having a big glass of sparkling water at hand while watching tv really helps. I also clean my teeth and take my make up off before sitting down as this ritual also confirms that my eating window is done and it is time to switch off before bed time. My youngest son who is 15 is constantly hungry and has cereal every night before bed but he is still growing and is using so much energy. I know that I have fed him a decent dinner so I don`t stress if he wants to eat again. I have to remind myself that I am 56 and not 15 and I am not using anywhere near the energy he is using!!!

I do intermittent fasting and I am meeting my health , weight loss and fitness goals. If I ever feel that I need something to eat between meals, I eat a very small handful of macadamia nuts. If I want something sweet, I’ll have a few macadamia nuts with some grapes. I think the high quality fat in the nuts keeps me feeling satiated. However I generally do not snack. I try to eat 30 grams of high quality protein at each meal and the protein fills me up so much that I am not hungry between meals. I am no longer hungry after my dinner. Intermittent fasting controls my food cravings about 95% of the time. Thank you for keeping this topic of personal health alive Jennifer.

Once I learned how to balance my meals (aka Abbey Sharp's Hunger Crushing Combo - protein, fiber, healthy fats) I stopped feeling hungry between meals and was able to stop snacking. I was snacking because I was always hungry since I didn't know how to feed myself properly. As a side note, my younger two kids love to come into the kitchen while I'm cleaning up after dinner to beg for more food. My rule is that they can have an apple or a banana, and if they don't want that, then they're not actually hungry!

This was very interesting to me. I am an American living in Greece and my kitchen is just like you described Madame Chics kitchen. A tiny room way in the back of the house that even has a sliding door to close. Seemingly, most Americans consider the Kitchen the heart of the home, In my opinion leads to disordered thinking and eating. The kitchen is where most people congregate and it is the room that typically faces the living room with the TV. Most people have been conditioned to eat whilst watching TV, and are used to the food in close proximity for easy access for mindless eating. The design of homes enable consumerist eating habits. Driveeating, talkeating, workingeating, playeating, studyeating, celebrateeating, rewardeating, sadeating, these all should be one word words because this is what is happening. People do just about every thing in the kitchen, like sit on the kitchen counters, do their hair there, homework, etc. Its not just for cooking or food storage or meal prep. I wouldn't be surprised if people started sleeping in the kitchen. It might be because of food insecurities and/or its a coping mechanism. People seems to be addicted to the dopamine they get from the kinds of consumables they eat. Just food for thought.

I would be very curious to see what the eating habits of traditional French women are during pregnancy! I was doing intermittent fasting for a good year before expecting my third. I practice eating mostly protein, then fat, and fiber per meal. I don’t snack now even at 32 weeks pregnant. We don’t store food on our counter. It all gets put away in the pantry/fridge. My kitchen closes, even though it’s an open floor home. I turn the light off over the sink and all things get put away. Kids know what when the sink light is on, I’m intending to make our meal. A bit part of this too is that I have OTHER THINGS TO DO than constantly cook/eat/prepare food for myself or others.

Coming from Europe, I have found once living here that I was so surprised at snacking all the time, with children as well! I am not taking about an apple or munching a carrot… but the snack supplies all the mums carry around! I think there is an element of it being demonstrated to the young generation. And restraint, or a glass of water, is a good thing to get into the habit of. Saying that, when they are in extreme growth spurts, they sometimes need a bit more but then they actually go back to regular eating windows.

It is so funny you brought this up today ❤ I have a long haired chihuahua who really likes to eat and after he is fed for the night. I always say “ Chip Carlos the kitchen is now closed” . It’s great advice for staying healthy for human and beast. I also lived in South America , 🇵🇾 where restaurants were closed from 12-3.

Great point! When I was growing up in UK I had to ask permission to eat from the kitchin. Of course we were naughty sometimes but it set a discipline which helps to not snack.

Very, very excellent video. Thanks for the reminder about not snacking. Always struggling with my weight I remember my mom putting me on my first “diet”. It was unhealthy but she always said stop snacking. She put me in 900 calories a day as a 12 year old. I dropped the weight. She eventually allowed me to have citrus between meals. But that “no snacking in between meals” mantra was always present. BTW I’m 68. 😊

One must remember that everytime you eat that insulin is stimulated and thus fat may be stored and so eating as few times a day as possible is best. I have progressed to a narrow window for eating these days so I eat breakfast at 7 with a softboiled or poached egg, plain 1/2 C, full fat Siggis Yogurt topped with 1.2 C of frozen or fresh blue berries and topped with ground cinnamon. Lunch is a salad of organic spring mix lettuce topped wth an avacado and tuna salad, or perhaps a piece of cooked fish. I also try to do low carb. After 2 PM I do not eat any food at all, I do however drink iced tea that I make from scratch, or sparkling soda maybe a cup of espresso or coffee black and often over ice. I am never hungry and I really feel full enough not to eat. If I have an evening where I must eat later becuase I am dining with friends, then I adjust the schedule.

I don't exactly do intermittent fasting but I eat an early dinner and then I don't eat after that. I have found that brushing my teeth helps and also I unplug and start getting ready for bed at 9 p.m. Watching tv or a movie can often make me want a snack so turning the screens off is helpful. I sometimes feel a little hungry but I just read my book and turn out the light and I know I will be healthier than if I ate a snack.

Since I started going to the gym in the morning I generally don’t eat breakfast until between 10 and 11 am. Sometimes I just eat two meals, brunch and dinner. So I fast from about 6;30 pm to 10:30 am on average most days and feel great.

Thank you for this video. I always appreciate your wonderful content! I’ve been fasting since March 2019 and love this lifestyle. I would never go back to my old way of eating. I completely agree that fasting makes one feel healthier. Thank you for your tips to get through those early days. Completely off topic, but also appreciated the visual beauty of this because of how well your blouse coordinated with your kitchen. Made the whole experience even more serene, which is something that tends to stand out in your posts.

Agree that F is possible. After doing this for a few years as well it just seems natural. I still sometimes need a snack between meals but try to make it healthy and so have been able to maintain proper weight. If you are thinking about it give it a try. Other benefits are better sleep , better digestion , and less aches and pains.

I grew up in Germany and it was the same, not much snacking and 3 mostly home cooked meals a day. The main meal was lunch time and a lighter meal at 6 or 7 pm. Maybe a fruit lateron if one felt like having something. As a child we weren’t even allowed to have a snack if it was to close to meal time. So yes it’s quite different in US

I enjoy watching Edukale and watching what Lucie’s mother eats for her 3 meals a day. Fasting occasionally is a good thing to do along with prayer to Jesus. I've recently gone back to it again. I had an interesting experience with my mother in law who berated me for not eating breakfast.

I agree, kitchen should be closed after dinner, and snacking in between meals should be reduced or avoided for most of us. I would just say that if anyone feels "ravenous" two-three hours after dinner it might be because they didn't have enough food during the day. Perhaps they had three meals but these weren't enough to fulfil nutrient and calories requirement. They could have a lighter snack, and slightly increase quantities the next day. It wouldn't be fasting, but going to bed hungry doesn't help with sleep quality. Also, dinner times in America are much earlier than in countries like Portugal. I normally have dinner at 7:30, f I had dinner at 5:30, I'd surely need something before bed at 10pm.

This may have been said, but the “great room” open concept has incorporated the kitchen into the living area. Our first home had more traditional “separate” room setup. I couldn’t see the kitchen when in the family room. I think that helps. The kitchen in our current house is practically in the kitchen. That makes it more tempting to grab food at any time. I’ve been 16:8 for about 15 months and lost 40 pounds. I love the IF lifestyle but it takes some willpower to stay out of the kitchen😊

I started doing the 16:8 method. It’s a bit tuff in evenings I will admit lol. At 41 I’m seeing that honestly we all just need to eat less:). I have always eaten very healthy my entire life but I gained an extra 12/15 pounds of “ healthy” eating from I believe snacking and eating a bowl of cereal before bed or even to much fruit. I wasn’t eating chips and fish crackers, so it was hard for me to understand why I had this extra weight hanging around. Thanks for the advice of having tea at night to work through it!
