Despite my comments above, I did not dislike this video. But I can totally see how that happens. It's as if this guy assumes his audience are morons. How can you even get close to a cinema camera and not understand that opening up your shutter lets more light in? In photography, information about aperture, shutter and ISO comes right after the first information: "this is the front of the camera". But maybe we live in a world now where you can be a film maker without being a proper photographer first? People come at this from a "I want my face to show up on the internet, how can I make that happen?" Well, you need a camera. "OK, OK, what button do I press??!" Well, honestly, I'm not a hater. Maybe I'm starting to become one of those "grumpy old men". It's not quite the same, there's a fine line in there somewhere....

I would say with film cameras, 180 degrees shutter angle wasn't chosen because of most cinematic motion blur (our days, with digital cameras you may choose it because of that reason). However ... Film cameras with rotary disc shutter might be set to other shutter angles too, and it's done not for motion blur, but for exposure purposes (of course with longer exposure you may have stronger motion blur. But i think way back then people wasn't considering motion blur.) Also film cameras with rotary disc shutter can't be set to shutter angle 360, because they need to have time to switch the film to the next frame (without smearing the frame), and that remaining angle (the whole part of the rotary disc) is used to cover the frame from light while it slides out and a fresh one slides in. 360 degree means exposure during all the time of a one single frame on any particular frame rate. So on frame-rate 24 fps: 360 degrees shutter means 1/24 180 = 1/48 90 = 1/96 On 30 fps: 360 degrees shutter means 1/30 180 = 1/60 90 = 1/120 And you can have 360 degrees shutter speed only with digital cameras. With film cameras you can't dedicate all time of the frame to a frame, because you need to have some time to switch to the next frame (as i explained above)

They went with more open shutter in PE to catch the gun fire. One of the issues they had with Scarface was the shutter speed would blank some of the muzzle flash. With less speed, you are able to make the gun fire look bright and impressive without resorting to CG or dangerous high amounts of slower burning gun powder. Watch the clip you sampled as the man fires the Thompson next to the tree. His hands and the tree glow naturally from the muzzle flash. That is almost never done right with CG.

Hey Josh, absolutely love your content, it's incredible. I was wondering about your input, for the life of me I have been filming at 50hz/30fps, and it's just what I got used to I guess (24 fps felt too jittery for tech shots on broll), and the 50hz is what lights run on here so I don't get flicker, do you think it's odd to use these settings? Or if it works... it just works...?
@DesertCookie
@DesertCookie 3 года назад
If it works for you it's a valid solution. The 180° shutter angle is mostly about feeling and conditioning. For example, I absolutely love shooting at 50Hz with an exposure time of 1/50. This gives me the same motion blur everyone is accustom to but makes viewing so much better. A higher framerate means more information and more fluid movements. At sub-30-fps I often get motion sick when the camera pans, even slowly. That doesn't happen with the lower end of HFR like 50 as my brain has an easier time interpreting what's happening. As such 50Hz at 1/50 is all-around better in my opinion. Especially since you can just export it at 25Hz and it would look identical to as if you filmed at 25Hz from the beginning. To be honest, there's one major downside: Mistakes become a lot more obvious. Just like Hollywood likes to shoot in 2K and then upscale to 4K because true 4K requires a lot more set-prep because error can be spotted much easier, this is a problem with HFR too. I still shoot my short-films in HFR because I can always drop the framerate later ;).

The part about shooting beyond 360 degree is very interesting. I recently shot a sunset video with my Sony A7III, I wanted to shoot a time-lapse video of the sunset and didn't want to shoot hundreds of photos, so I used an ND filter and 4K 24p video mode but at 1/4 second shutter speed. And in post I didn't notice any drop frame, the final video (after sped up) looks perfect, I got smooth cloud and ocean, is it just because the motion is very slow?

ONE MORE NOTE: I am wrong - just tested it. My question is why did it happen to my footage initially? Is it maybe higher ISO’s or too much movement like a dance floor that can cause that? I noticed this shooting wedding dance floor footage and ASSumed it was the shutter angle which my fat fingers used to hit the dial while shooting on the gh4 sometimes. Now I need to know what caused this. Sorry for the bad advice RU-vid but I’m glad I learned!

In the beginning of filming, I shot every video with 1/25, because... 25 FPS. I find it more realistic, because you have in reality no moments where is jumps between a moving object. Today I film all with 1/50 shutter. If 50 FPS or 25 FPS. On 50 FPS you see it not and when you half the speed, it fits perfect on the 25 FPS shots. In the most time my final video play back with 25 FPS and I shot at 50 FPS. That's reason 2 because I ever shot 1/50

I work as an A1st AC with IATSE 667 and are currently using zeiss super speed primes on a feature.. most of the time my we shoot T2 just because the DP knows how its almost impossible to keep 1st team sharp on a 135 from 60ft all the way into 6ft. Your right about the 180 rule however we often go to 144 if there are roll bars in Led's or screens. Most shows we use Cooke S4's T 2. Often a DP will go to 360 usually because the sun is going down and we have no choice but to to get it in the can on time.on the s4's The throw is the same on all primes but these superspeeds the throw is different for each lens. FML. On the big shows I demand a preston light ranger if the DP is a jerk and shoots WFO.. really cool video, I too own a BMPCC and it rocks.. we even used one on star trek discovery for a gymbal shot and it matched the Alexa mini seamlessly...

I would recommend using shutter speed over shutter angle. just so if you're in a 50hz powergrid pal country you can keep your shutter at 1/25th or 1/50th. and if you are in ntsc 60hz powergrid you can keep it at 1/30th or 1/60th............to avoid light flicker/rolling when shooting 24fps (as 1/48th can produce some subtle flicker/rolling under certain lighting circumstances). as youi want your shutter speed to be divisible by your countries power-grid to avoid rolling/flicker (many older hollywood films actually used lights that oscillated at 48hz frequency to match film)
@antoine3220
@antoine3220 5 лет назад
Hey, another really cool video ! But in my opinion, I think you should have precise something more about the shutter speed, and the rule of 180°. Because if you want to avoid flick from some light light you're gonna need to put you're shutter speed on 1/50 in some cases (or 1/60, depending of your country). To know how to convert in circular shutter, one simple rule: frame rate x shutter speed x 360. For exemple : 24x (1/50) x 360 = 172,8° If you're recording on high speed frame rate, you're gonna need to put a 1/100 (or even more) shutter speed, to avoid exeed 360°. Hope it will help ! (oh and please forgive me for my bad english)

Yeah it would be 4 photos a second to be exact when shooting 1/4 shutter speed. So yeah. That's why I don't recommend it. But in the example I showed, it was fine for that shot when the light changed it caught it. But when the cars came, it was a give away.

Good camera, but not so much for low light-- you literally have to hope the moon and the planets line up just right to pull this one off (oh, and use a $12,000 lens too!). Night shooting with the stars and minimal ambient glow looks about the same with a f/1.4 50mm $350 lens, and if you have a full moon, you can pretty much do what looks like daylight. It helps that the SONY A7M3 is a next gen full frame sensor, it downsamples from 6K to 4K, has a fairly sophisticated in camera noise redux for just that kind of shooting, and has dramatically increased dynamic range at that ISO range, with great color science. I love the BMPCC4K, and it is great for most things, but definitely not low-light-- making what you did even more impressive.

If you wanted the best low light video, would you use the Leica F0.95 with a speed booster on a crop sensor like the a6500 for example? Or just the F0.95 on the A7sii? Is the ISO performance of the A7sii a Stop better than the a6500s? And if money wasn't an issue what combo would you use for the best low light video? Infrared doesn't count btw hahah

i break the shutter angle rule mainly for when i have issues with different refresh rates on electronics that cause flicker(Lights, monitors, cell phones, TV's that actually work in 50hz but marketted as 60hz) I'll move from 180 to 210 all the time, it's a life saver. I will definitely give this a try in super low light, I'm in dire need because I use a GH5 and it's terrible beyond 2500 iso.

Actually with 60fps I get a better result with 1/160th of a second. Makes senses on some math I can’t figure out of 10 lol. It was on a t5i though. It was my own trick to get the best looking slow motion. I’ve done 1/320 for 120p but I can’t remembered it looks better. It just removes the blur and makes it perfectly smooth. 180 rule can get bent with slow motion.

Mind blown! Sooo, if I chose to shoot 24fps at 1/12 of a second would that be a 720 degree shutter? like snowboard tricks! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

LOL, I constantly break the 180 degree rule but I kept it quiet. Now I don't have to feel guilty about it. There are dozens of us, DOZENS!

What's the highest ISO you can use for decent footage? The moonlit shots look totally usable. Was that maybe ISO 25,000 with an f/1.4 lens and 1/25 shutter?

Never ever ever break the shutter rule? That is bullshit.Shutter angle is nothing covered by law and all those shutter speeds have their use. If you shoot green screen, you cannot afford to have motion blur, because it will screw up the keying process = that's where fast (blurless) shutter speed comes to play. You can always add shutter speed in post, by the way. If you want to make something faster, slow shutter speed of 1/12 for example will make nice blur, all you need to do is fasten the footage and voilà! Let's not be influenced by rules, they exist for a good thing and I respect them, but that doesn't mean that we are not allowed to experiment a little and discover things. Filmmaking is art, not a fucking school.

Josh for a night club video do you suggest to use this technique with gimble? Shoot at 120 fps with 360 technique?

I enjoyed the video a ton. Just to clarify an otherwise humorous approach that you took to describing flying at night with a drone, you can actually fly at night (after civil twilight has ended) if you have the appropriate waiver from the FAA. Cheers! :)

I usually shoot 1/40 at night because it reduces flicker substantially, but now I know the trade offs are negligible I’m happy ,

I'm quite curious if you can use this technique, and then add motion blur in post like Timewarp in After Effects to make it seem like it's shutter speed is 1/48.

This is a game changing. I've been doing it sometimes without being conscious and now I know the possibilities. Once again hands down man

One-stop of light, actually means the sensor is getting twice more (or less) light than the previous stop. So, that's a LOT of light

A movie that goes beyond 360 degrees is Requiem for a Dream. There are shots of the diet pill addicted mother walking on the street at what seems like 1/12" and it gives a very surreal effect. They call this technique Snorricam and it's used in other scenes of the film near the end.
