This is the heating solution that I've used in my shop for the last couple winters. It works really well for me. Obviously you have to use common sense and be extra cautious. Space heaters are dangerous, but they offer a very cost effective heating solution for shops without a dedicated heating system in place.

Quick question. I have a Mr. Heater but a lower model without a built in thermostat. I guess this system with the external thermostat won’t work with mine because it requires to push the start button unlike your model with a built in thermostat. My fan will start up but the heater won’t ignite will it? Thoughts?
@InsiderCarpentry
@InsiderCarpentry 3 года назад
That is correct. I wish I had explained that better in the video. That is the reason I had to go with that larger model.

LP puts a lot of moisture in the air. You need good circulation. You can also buy a 3 blade industrial ceiling fan at HD for next to nothing that blows all the rising ceiling heat back down and circulates the shop air better.

When I built by my shop, I had a tankless water heater installed. It also heats the air by circulating hot water on a loop through a radiator with a fan that blows the heat off. Love it. Highly recommended

Awesome. I use a 60k Mr Heater in my 2 car detached totally uninsulated garage. I will manually run it for 15 min every hour or so even in the coldest winter days (around 30˚ here). Makes it totally comfortable to work in. I love your auto set up.

Great solution to make the working environment a little cozier! I use a smaller unit in my garage that is 1/2 the size of yours and when I have a cabinet project and am in the garage longer, I use some electric heaters for steady beat but the electric bill is definitely higher!

I use a small version of this for my garage/shop when I am using it in the winter. I only run it when I am in there working, which is not that often , and I set the tank outside just in case. You have a pretty cost affective heating solution there for the temporary use you have planned. I bet you are excited to have a permanent shop and get the garage back.

18000 btu ductless mini split with heat pump. Inexpensive to run and very easy to install. Cost about 1200 for unit and does heating and cooling. Just put one in a 1000 sq foot shop addition. And just runs on a thermostat with nothing to worry about. Plus you gain your floor space back. We all need more of that haha! Love your work and all the tips!

I'd go that route if I knew I was going to stay in the space longer, but I don't think I will be here long enough to be worth the effort.

I found that propane added moisture into the shop when I shut down for the night room cools down the beds of my equipment, hand planes, squares are warm condensation forms and they rust. I'm looking for dry heat system that will not break the bank like electricity. If I work in the cold all go's well no finishing or glueing, so short work times freezing my butt off.

My attic is well ventilated, so I crack my attic access door in the ceiling while running the heater, and the moisture and excess fumes seem to rise right up out of the room. The moisture level never gets above 35%, even in the coldest of Minnesota winters and needing to heat it up a lot.

Interesting Spencer....Worked on a Self Build of 30 houses many moons ago I was "Head Honcho" at the time. ....What is a Self Build?..... it is the chance to build your own house at a knockdown rate where you the Self builders supply the labour (and it works really well) however you get people from all walks of life mostly building trade but from other areas. You soon get the feel of things of who can do what some persons have more skills than others. Anyway this lad who used to work on "Flat Roofs" had limited skills (very limited god bless him). It was a really cold winters day with snow on the ground there was about 25 Self builders working out side all very cold. to keep sprits up I thought there is lots of off cuts of wood laying around could tidy the -place up and start a fire keep the lads warm while working. So I asked this lad to gather up all the off cuts of wood and start a fire (as you do) explaining why and use the off cut timber only. about 30 mins later one of the guys came in and said have a look out the Window. So clearing the ice of the Window I looked out there was a lovely big Fire going great guns .Just like the 5th November on "Guy Fawkes Night". The Lad had put two brand new timber windows along with other good Lumber /Timber on to the fire and that was not all in the UK they have Wooden Telegraph Poles which are normally dipped in tar to preserve them. This lad had put all the good timber around a Telegraph Pole and that was on Fire as as well... Ye Gods I thought at least the other Self builders where warm.. Such is life if you need help to set up a fire with all that old lumber/Timber in your workshop I have the very Man......Have a Great week Spencer.

I used to have a kerosene blower& I would have to put it in the window with a plwd adapter so it would breathe outside air and not rust my cast iron.. Propane hands down!! Now I have a "Modine hot dog" Ceiling hung but I still use a small propane blower first thing in the morning for the quick heat up

I’ve wanted to heat my work space forever but haven’t. I’ve been scared off by the price or all the manufacture’s CYA. Your system looks great. 2 questions please. How cold are your winters? How long do the tanks last? Your video has been a huge help. Thank you!

Propane heaters, such as that, burn the hell out of available oxygen in the room. From personal experience, make sure you have make-up air from outside.

Another thing that would reduce the cost to run is get a 250 gallon tank. Have a propane truck fill it. Thst way you buy it by the gallon intead of by the pound.

I have worked as an electrician for years now. As I get older I can't be in buildings that are heated by space heaters, I would rather freeze. The fumes from even the propane space heaters make it hard for me to breathe. I put a 30k btu mini-split in my shop. I just can't take that heavy air that come out of those, whether it's the water vapor or combusted propane idk. Make sure you have fresh air coming in. Those little regulators are meant to be outside btw, they vent raw propane. I see you set your temp to 69, nice.

I’d recommend plumbing the propane tanks outside, I’ve personally seen a tank leak then the heater with a thermostat kicked the hearted on. It blew the doors and windows out of the building. About the size of your shop.

Link for propane heater has an error. I did a quick math and on a cold day, you'd use one propane tank per day of heating. As I looked on refill prices, it gives you about $16 per day. Wouldn't it be cheaper and safer to install ductless split air conditioning with heating. You'd need about 7 kW of heating power for your shop area. At electric rates around $0,11/1kWh, a day of AC heating is about $7. AC has it's own fan to distribute the heat, it's quiet and much safer than propane heater. With AC you have moisture control and of course cooling in the summer.

You are probably correct but Spence said he is planning to move to another space soon for his shop and does not want to make the investment into a more efficient system. Good information for his new shop.

I second the ceiling fan idea. Hot air rises and it doesn't help having it all up top.

@@InsiderCarpentry No doubt its well built. Stand on a ladder with your head a ceiling height. You will notice how much heat is wasted up there.
@Quickened1
@Quickened1 3 года назад
that fan is circulating the air more than you think... The draft created draws colder air from below and forces warmer air down by bouncing off the ceiling and surrounding walls...

your already spending more on that setup, than you need to. the best heater i ever had in a garage was out of a mobile home. they are small, hang from the ceiling, and plumbed in to the house gas. i did mine for just about $100 complete up and running.

The best shop heat is radiant floor heat. It’s a tragedy it isn’t more common.
@stevekilbride8494
@stevekilbride8494 3 года назад
Ceiling mounted radiant heaters is definitely the better approach for shops. They don't blow dust around, don't make additional noise (at least the electric ones, anyway). Since radiant heat warms solid objects - including your workpiece, finishes tend to come out better.

@@stevekilbride8494 I meant radiant floor heat.

@@ThisTall It's certainly an option. However radiant floor systems aren't generally going to be practical for an existing shop.
