HIVE lighting has been using similar technology for years now. instead of 6 color RGBCAL they used 5 color on lower end models and 7 color on higher end models. Chauvet also uses RGBCAL and is quite affordable but targets DJ and Theater markets rather than Photo and Video. Chauvet even has models that mix visible light colors with ultraviolet for various theater and DJ applications.

If you’re on a budget (only three filmmakers are and I’m one of them) an Arri tungsten fresnel gelled correctly for heat dissipation can give you hard shadows on a budget (e.g. bluish moonlight). However, Tommy’s policy on tungsten HOT lights is that you use them only if you live within line of sight of a fire station, otherwise you must go with LED. Naturally Tommy never made this fire station joke, but tungsten lights are very hot so be careful. Driving a car is dangerous as well, so be careful when driving and when working with gelled tungsten fresnels. Thanks for reviewing this LED light Tommy. 👍
