I like a quick solution so a tarp is a natural. There must be 100+ ways to use a tarp. Like Blackie says "it always come along."

i find that with really 4 or 5 tarp set will cover 99% of what i need for camping in my woods..

I had two of these that over the years deteriorated and the brown side would stick to itself. So, what I did was took both and snaped them together, brown side in, towards each other. Now it rolls up without sticking together, it's twice as heavy but works fine for the canoe or truck. I didn't have to throw it out.

I agree the Tarp is one of the most versatile of pieces of gear a person can have, and not just for shelter.

I saw one of those multi configuration tarp shelter diagrams at one point also. I believe it was part of a survival book that was government issue. I will look for mine and if I can find it, I will get you a title and NSN # for that book. In the service I had a shelter half system but everywhere I went, I used a poncho tarp system (plow point and open ridge line set) and when possible the government jungle hammock. Lot of guys even in the service laughed at this but found getting rest in the field far more difficult than I did. Great vid and info! I will do my best to find that chart and info for you and your viewers! 23 years later and I still have the jungle hammock, that thing is a behemoth!

About the only uses I have for the classic lean to, is as shade or just to block/redirect wind..Diamond style on my walking staff works best for me...especially with a small fire, no tree trunk blocking my way in or out... Blackie we like your style of teaching.. 👍

My 4 setups: plow point - for all the reasons you gave + can also be stuffed with debris. I use a ridge line on three of these configurations to prevent the ridge pucker (snow/rain catcher) displayed on your plow point set up. Pyramid with trekking pole (Lavuu style) - this is by far the warmest and most weather resistant. Diamond - used when hammock camping. Most bang for the buck. By far most used. Modified A-frame - long side towards wind, rain, and/or Sun. Great design. Works well either on the ground or in a hammock. My least used though. All configurations with a square 8.5x8.5 or 10x10 tarp.

Great tarp shelter sets Blackie. I like the diamond /plow point set up, looks the best to me. Do you ever consider bringing a mosquito net in the Summer? with the mosquitoes, ticks, spiders and creepy crawlies where I'm at. I can't see using a tarp without a net. I wish I could do tarp camping. I would save so much weight over a tent. I don't do hammocks, they are too confining to me, I don't want to be a Bigfoot Burrito or a Bear Pinata, LOL!

We are often above the tree line in summer. I bought two fibreglass tent poles with female joints at both ends. I cut them in half to make four short poles, that can still join. They are about the same length as Blackie's bundle.

This may not be bushcrafty, but I have started using 2 or 3 ratchet straps 15 to 20 ft long for my ridgeline....have MS and I was never good at knots when my hands worked normaly. I do stake it down like a normal person. most times I can find 2 trees close enough for one strap.
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 4 года назад
what ever works is the bottom line i know people who use bungie straps cause they dont tie knots well..its all good as long as you are happy

DIXIE TUBES An alternative.... At ace hardware, I picked up caulking caps. Tool time caulking caps 617723998059 (red in color) Loaded 6 of them with 20 grains of pyrodex fffg, pushes in a wad, dropped a 11cap in, and topped it off with a .375 ball. I plan to try them with my new uberti later this week. ( off topic for this video, I know)

Excellent demonstration! Outlines 3 basic setups and in what situations they work best. Have you or anyone you've hiked/camped with regularly used a walking stick as a tarp pole? I am curious if that seemed to work well, or if it wasn't really necessary.
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 4 года назад
it can i have used one to hold up center of tarp for more headspace / room also i have used it to hold front of tarp up in place where trees were not avaible

Been a long time sub here and it just hit me - I don't think I have ever seen an "over-nighter" video from you. I would love to see you do one - as good as you are at your "how to" videos I think you would do an excellent job. Just a thought. By the way I really like the plow point as well.
