I think the Series X is an under appreciated machine for collectors. It plays: Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One & obviously Series X|S games. Granted it isn't total backwards compatibility, but there isn't really a console with that degree of range - the fat PS3 I suppose. It also has a disc slot, which plays a small handful of games that are disc only backwards compatible that otherwise would be locked to the original Xbox and the 360. I really like the Series X, they need to lean into backwards compatibility more, it's the best feature of the Xbox.

The problem with xbox one/series collecting is that the consoles require an internet connection to activate right out of the box. This is effectively console-based DRM and a non-starter for collectors. One of the many reasons PS4 won that generation is because nothing stood in the way of ownership. You could get a ps4 or a launch ps5 and play physical games without ever connecting to the internet. BUT, playstation has this problem now too with the slim ps5. Because it has a detachable disc drive, it has to connect to the internet at least once before physical games can be played just like the xbox. The reason for this has more to do with copyright laws rather than sony hoarding control, but the end result is still the same for the consumer: less control over the things you buy. The fat ps5 with the built in disc drive is still safe tho 👍

The large problem with Xbox One & Series-X consoles, is they can't be jailbroken like the Playstation ones. So collecting physical keys/games for XB1 & Series-X consoles, strongly depends on their servers still being up & obtaining the updates & large portions of games not on the disc.

Microsoft pretty much invented the whole day one patch scam. So most Xbox One disks contain an unplayable buggy broken mess. As soon as the servers go down and you can't download the patches anymore, those disks become as useful as a coaster, to put a glass on. I think most collectors are well aware of this fact, which is why most of them don't care as much about collecting for that console.
@thatssomegoodpie
@thatssomegoodpie Месяц назад
Untrue. Most Xbox One discs still contain a decent playable build. Same with PS4 and PS5 games. It's Series X you have to worry about not being fully on disc since Microsoft is still using regular BD-discs instead of the 4K UHD high capacity discs PS5 uses.

The Xbox One and Series X have one major problem. The console itself needs internet to be activated the first time and in general it's a lot more internet dependant. This will inevitably make the hardware a lot less accessible when buying from the second hand market years after it has been discontinued. We're already seeing base Xbox One VCR models becoming bricked because they haven't been updated for a while. This also means the physical games are rather worthless and nobody cares since the hardware won't work properly. As long as this issue isn't resolved by some kind of jailbreak physical Xbox One and Series X will not be desirable. There is also the misconception that most Xbox One games don't even contain the full game on disc which is just not true. On top of that the dominance of PlayStation right now just means Xbox isn't top of mind.

I've owned a Series X for about a year and have picked up a few Xbox One games recently. Such as the Dead Rising port from 2016, and Shadow of War. I think i'll continue to pick up more games for it as time goes on. Shooters are more comfortable on the Xbox controller, so i'll get those on there for sure. Xbox One does have some very cheap games. Take Transformers: Devastation for example. It's around $50-$60 for the PS4 version, but only about $20 for the Xbox One version. If you're looking to just own some 8th gen titles physically for the cheap, then it's well worth investing in. The problem comes in with the Series X games. Plenty of Series X cross-gen games like Sonic Frontiers, Resident Evil Village, or Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth only come with the Xbox One version on the disc, and you just download the Series X version when you insert the disc into your console. I don't really like buying new 360 games I don't own physically for this same reason. Backwards compatible games aren't reading off your disc, it's just giving you a license to download the emulated version. Also, every time I go to my local retail store, especially GameStop, there are very few Xbox One games. There is a shelf full of PS4 and PS5 games, but just a very small Xbox section. Like you said, it seems lots of people aren't buying these physical copies and there isn't a high demand for them. It will be interesting to see if there is a price jump on some of these, especially the exclusives, in the years to come.

Great video Pete! I personally strongly believe that Xbox One and Xbox Series X games will be collectible in the future. The biggest reason is because games for these consoles will be that last games that your are actually will be able to create a decent collection with. If Microsoft’s next console will be able to play physical discs, chances are that the print runs for these games will be so low that collecting isn’t even worth it. If people will start to feel nostalgic for Xbox One and / or Series X one day, they will have a difficult time finding a lot of titles because so many titles already have a low print run. Just like you mentioned. It’s much harder to find certain games for Xbox than for PS5 right now. I’m really consciously collecting certain Xbox One and Series X games knowing that these will be hard to find in the future.

I collect for Xbox One and SX and its my preferred system to play on if they are released on both systems. (I current own close to 900 XB1/SX games.) The games I watch for and pickup every chance I can are the obscure recent Japanese games that get a release for the system. When Unicorn Overlord came out I had a hard time finding a copy for XBSX, the PS5/4 where common as hell. I asked Gamestop and they got in 2 copies compared to PS5/4 getting over a dozen of each. Others I recommend getting are AI: The Somnium Files, Fallen Legion, Loop8, Neptunia, Persona 3 Reload, Raiden IV, Sea of Stars, Scorn, (scorn is rarer on XB yet only the PS5 version shot up in value, heck many thought it was a PS5 exclusive because they never saw the XB version, plus it got a re-release from VGP but not the XB version) and of course any of the LRG releases (I swear I see far less of these sell compared to the other consoles) while you can find these games at market price (or cheaper) now, in the years to come they may be harder to find compared to the versions on PS5/4 and Switch. The only thing holding them back as far as value is there's a ton more Sony and Nintendo collectors then Microsoft.

Having the best multiplatform versions helped as well. You almost always wanted Xbox over PS2 or PS3 versions. Then Xbox One happened... it's more expensive and underpowered?! Plus all the DRM nonsense. A lot of us Xbox fans checked out right there. Now PS4/5 are where the physical collectors have gone. My PS4 collection is massive and I've got such a paltry XB1 collection in comparison. Xbox nowadays is just in such a poor place after so many poor decisions. Companies like Limited Run barely support them and a lot of major publishers are following suit and Xbox won't even get physical versions anymore. Hey Pete, I am a big Xbox One/Series X fan. One additional detail to note about the SX is the Series X upgrades that you get for free on a number of Xbox360/XB1/Xbox titles. Another reason I prefer buying some games on XSX over PS5 relates to performance. Two key titles that stick about to me are Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden. The physical copies for Xbox are XB1/XSX which output 4K and 120 FPS on series X. The PlayStation versions of these games were PS4 only with no PS5 upgrade, and as a result only run at 1080p 60fps. I really wish Backwards compatibility would continue to be expanded though!

There really needs to be a database. I find myself checking Digital Foundry frequently. One specific example was Shadow of Mordor being 4K on PS4 Pro, whereas the Xbox One version was sub-1080p. However the sequel, Shadow of War was 4K on Xbox One X and even on PS5 it never got a patch so it can't hit that level. Doom 2016 is another one, it is native 4K on X1X/XSX and blurry 1440p on PS4 Pro/PS5.
@DP12321
@DP12321 Месяц назад
Another weird example is Far Cry 4. It is 1080p on PS4 and 900p on Xbox One. However it got an FPS Boost update so it runs better now on Xbox but still looks better on a base PS4 over an XSX. A lot of early Xbox One games really suffered because the PS4 versions ran circles around them. However that changed once the Xbox One X released.

There's one huge thing that gives me second thoughts when buying for Xbox one as a collector, and that's the required online handshake to start operating the console itself. An Xbox One or Series is a paperweight unless you do the online handshake and have an active gamertag to start playing games. There's also the fact that first party games are mostly not completely on disc or nowadays don't have physical releases at all. Halo infinite and Series version of Forza Horizon 5 were the first two games that solidified the Xbox as one not to collect for. I collect original Xbox and 360 games all day but the Series and One consoles wiill always have a huge question mark with future viability.

I am an old school gamer. I like collecting and playing games for the xbox one. I don't use game pass and don't even know how it works. I like to buy a game, put it in the system and go. I would like to to buy or rebuy retro games and play them on my xbox one. I know it doesn't make sense, but I would rebuy some games again just to play it on there again if they are cheap enough. I wonder if I can play the original Doom games on the xbox one? I think I need to purchase them digitally. I was hoping I can unlock them with a newer doom game. Maybe doom slayers collection, but I don't know if that would work. I am thinking of buying the sonic origins collection and maybe the megaman collections. I bought the cobra kai games on the xbox one, playing the 1st one and having fun.

I am buying Xbox one series x physical games once in a while since they can be cheap like you said. As for modern disc based games, I’m playing them now because I really don’t 100% know if in the future I will be able to just pop this disc in a console, install it and be able to play the game without having to be connected to the internet and downloading an update.

Xbone is my main console I’m focusing on buying for atm. I generally don’t like having too many consoles hooked up at once and having xbone allows me to play about 1/2 of my 360 library. The unreliable nature of gamepass having games going up and coming down off the service has lead me to mainly picking up games in series I like, even if I have no intention of playing them currently. Main mind set for me with this is that, just like OG xbox and 360, services have gone down and prices have crept up (at least in the UK). I imagine when/if the next online service comes alone and/or the xbox brand dies off, these games will become valuable. Not saying the definitely will do, but I do think theres logic behind my thought process
@lifebyadam
@lifebyadam Месяц назад
The only problem with this is that the console itself requires an internet connection to activate. So, hypothetically, if the xbox brand goes away, you'll be fine as long as your current console still works. But, if you have to buy a replacement console in that future, then you wouldn't be able to activate it to add an account and play your games. PS4 and the launch PS5 don't have this problem, BUT the new ps5 slim does. This isn't meant to start a console war in the comments. I just want to inform people so they don't buy a bunch of discs that they mistakenly think they'll be able to use. Personally, I choose to get the ps4 versions of discs even though I have a ps5 because there's a greater ability to maintain ownership with those.

A hot tip for yall! If u can find old BACK COMPAT games that DO NOT WORK, they will work on the Series X! f th egame is scratched so bad th egame wont load, but at least the title id of the game loads, then back compat will load the game data from microsoft servers. U could sratch the disc very backd and still uuse it for back compat. So dont throw them away and tryh to get them fre if u can

Back compat needs internet/Xbox account so good luck there yet 360's is up still but could be dropped right? Shivers. Updates need internet (unless network settings off), smart delivery disk's I tried on my 2020 OS VCR and yeah nah I may need to update it or disconnect my Xbox One X from the network and check. First time setup needs internet (there is a reason Windows 10/11 dropped or HIDE local accounts the idiots). It's a joke. Offline may work (does Xbox Oe games I know they do but already activated consoles/reset up and formatting or smart delivery games to ignore the Series downly/detection part or whichever has the X ox One version, I checked my very few smart delivery and between, Biomutant, Project Cars 3, Demon Turf, AC Valhalla it was interesting that's for sure I put them into groups and got 2 titles per fine offline and not worth it, not what I actually called them I can't remember still like my back compat groups to remind me so no website/check the disk all the time) for sure but otherwise. I have Valkyria Chronicles 4 as my ONLY 1.0 no disk game for Xbox One. While Motorcycle Club, Conception Plus (PSP remaster with cut content because censorship), Wanted Dead (can't say for PS5 disk but assuming so as bought it for PS4 and still waiting on that 1 update they said about so till then it's 1.0), Date A Live (2 PS3 games and a bonus. Vita version was that and PS4 is a more complete package) and some others I have for PS4, Switch and Vita. I have about what less then 10 so about 5-7 or so 1.0 games. Including like Wanted Dead Devil's Third has no updates for a Wii U game. Beaten it twice. But primarily finished games, remasters by certain studios. I get media apps, I get other factors but besides the app store and variety and the eh Blu ray/CD apps while PS4 no CD playback but does DVD/Blu ray no extra app download. Yeah the Xbox is just got benefits but too much internet and pushing it into the store like Windows does. It's got problems but the menu for DVDs on PS4/Xbox are nice and I prefer over PS2/PS3/PSP menus. Online only games I mean if audiences care to rework them once licensing but most won't care to revive them like Warhawk PS3, like Lawbreakers as a more recent example. People will leave the others dead as don't care for them at all not just the state of them with the server calls/code and more. I know the servers and code are more advanced then a satellview/Sega modem but still local/temp, disk's and whatever is actually on them, profiles and others server stuck and gone. It gets interesting then we'll cloud being more of that and less local.

Hey Pete, I'm in a pretty similar boat. I pretty much only use my xbox for game pass and rarely buy physical games on my playstation. I'm starting to shift to digital only because I have an easier time finding game sales on steam sales, psn or xbox sales. You're recent ebay video did inspire me tho to start building my physical game collection! I honestly miss the feeling tho of walking into a game store and finding a bunch of cheap games and buying a lot of games. Even if I didn't enjoy them all, it was pretty fun to shop and have a ton of cases to dig through to find a fun game to play.

I'd consider buying games that were 'all on disc' but that's very limited on the Xbox One because they choose not to pay Sony the licensing for ultra blurays. I think the prices for the Xbox One are, genuinely, "for a good reason". For collecting purposes they're simply worse in every way outside of the price as compared to a PS4 copy of the same game.

Ive got a huge xbox one/series x collection because theyre literally identical to the playstation counterparts, but usually way cheaper. Game pass is ridiculous because youre paying a monthly fee for a ton of games that you could own for dirt cheap. The only thing in my eyes that makes the ps5 stand out against xbox is the unique controller features, but most ps5 games dont even take advantage of them.

For the last little while the Xbox copy has been my go-to, mainly because I have an Xbox One X and in cases where it has an enhancement patch, it will be better than what I can run on my base PS4. But unfortunately in some cases, there are games that never got an enhancement patch and are much worse even on the Xbox One X with the extra power than it would be on a base PS4. With my plan to buy a PS5 soon, I've been leaning more towards getting PS4 copies both because of the PS5 enhancement patches and because of the many games that had PS4 Pro patches/versions and run at their best on the PS5. I might end up just buying a regular PS5 and then a cheap used Series X eventually to get the best of both worlds and to get a bit more out of my old Xbox One copies, whether they are enhanced for Xbox One X already or not. I agree with you that it seems like most games will have sold more on PS than Xbox, especially niche/JRPG games, so that's another reason I've liked having copies for Xbox instead of PS, even if I don't ever really intend to sell my copies anyway.

I'm Xbox-only. Last PlayStation I owned was PS3. I've been steadily collecting more and more XB1 games since 2019, because obviously physical games are on their way out. The biggest problem with XB1 discs is not having a playable build actually present on the disc. For this reason I cannot own Starfield, Jedi Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy, Forza Horizon 5, Forza Motorsport, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, etc. and the list continues to grow. When a new game comes out more than likely you need a download in order to play it. That means physical Xbox games are ALREADY DEAD. It doesn't matter if they keep shipping discs if they're actually incomplete or just digital copies.

xbox games are gonna be the go to for people who want to play games on the cheap. I actually prefer xbox games because it handles backwards compatability better than the others, it's extremely painless, just put the game in and it works, usually with an enhancement update. I think these two reasons will be big in the future

I am getting physical Xbox games. I'm not sure why, honestly. I think it's just a bit of counter culture / hipster in me. Games like R-Type Tactics, Dragon Quest III HD, Neptunia Sisters Vs Sisters, Neptunia Game Maker Revolution, Persona 3 Portable / Persona 4 Golden, Visions of Mana, Raiden IV, SMT V, Persona 5 Royal and Tactica, Tales of Arise, KOF XV, Diofield Chronicle, Star Ocean Divine Force. They're all available on multiple platforms, but I've been opting to go with them physically on Xbox. It's a little hard to explain, I see the more popular systems like crowded parking lots and I'd prefer to park further away. I know that makes zero sense for games, but it's just the vibe I get so hey, why not? The recent "SDCC convention exclusive foil cover" versions of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden seemed to be individually numbered. Each game had 2050 on Switch, 1150 on PS4, and 1050 on Xbox. The Xbox version is technically the 'rarest', and when LRG put the extras on sale it still stayed up in stock the longest. The demand is so low for stuff on Xbox. It's hard to imagine them becoming valuable by comparison or anything, though. If you look at original Xbox even though they usually have the 'best' multiplatform version, a lot of the games stay really cheap (some exceptions of course).

I have a sizable Xbox One collection actually. I never stopped collecting with the 8th gen, and even now, I'm collecting diligently for the 9th gen as well. Downloads and GamePass have no appeal to me, I'd rather have the physical copy. Sometimes it's difficult to tell what folks are even into these days, because I don't see pickup videos of people showing new physical releases anymore. I feel like I'm the only one buying them. Visions of Mana physical coming out at the end of the month, btw. I suggest everybody pick it up.

It’s not just Xbox I work at GameStop in Buffalo as a second job for the discount to help with my habit lol. When nhl came out last year we got 7 copies in. 4 for ps5, 1 for ps4 and 2 for series x. This year when paper Mario came out we got 55 copies when normally any first party nintendo game we usually get 100 plus. I worked at the one in the galleria mall at that time and it’s one of the more busier GameStop’s in Buffalo and still not getting many physical games. I’m a small time collector actually inspired by this channel many years ago to get into collecting and what I have to pay for retro games is insane and now new games either don’t pan out or I gotta pay $80 for a code and not have anything for the shelf.
