About this video: The fifth generation Range Rover (L460) has been anticipated by the world over the last few years. We’ve known for a while that Land Rover we’re gearing up to move out production on the L405 and start their new flagship model’s production for the 2022 model year. In fact, historically, a new Range Rover design has been announced every 10 years (excluding the transition from the Classic to P38A models). Each model usually receives at least one design refresh halfway through it’s model lineup with a “final edition” being made for the final 3 production years. This has now happened on a number of Land Rover vehicles, including the beloved L322 Range Rover.
Over the last ten years, we’ve been blessed with one of the greatest mixes of luxury and capability with the Range Rover L405. At its launch, it had enthusiasts questioning the path Land Rover was taking; however, over the last 10 years, the Range Rover full-size L405 model has proven itself to be a proper Range Rover to most. However, the focus has now shifted once again. Let’s sit down and talk about our thoughts on the new L460 fifth-generation Range Rover redesign for 2022.
Now more than ever, it’s obvious that Land Rover’s priorities have shifted from capability to luxury. This was something that was becoming apparent after the L322 model left production and the L405 rolled out to customers. The focus on luxury with capability started to fade, and it became clear Land Rover were beginning to play into the Beverly Hills shopping trolly that they had become known for due to their popularity with celebrities and high-status individuals.
The Range Rover name now represents so much more than just a Land Rover with some leather seats. Now, to most people, a Range Rover is (unfortunately) a status symbol. The days of it being the ultimate off-roader are long gone, which was easily apparent in their press conference. When the Defender was announced in fall of 2019, they made an effort to show off its capability and refinement. In the press conference for the new Range Rover design, Land Rover notably quoted Coco Chanel along with discussing their vehicle’s popularity among the elite.
This wasn’t what enthusiasts like myself were hoping for; however, I believe to some extent, we all expected it. The design, feels more lazy than ever, and to me, this model feels like a refresh of the outgoing L405 model. The overall shape and design is quite similar, and the interior (to me) feels like a downgrade. It feels that now the Range Rover has its interior pulled from a high-end Jaguar F-Pace with some options added by Land Rover.
To me, it’s just not right. Land Rover noted that this model was their company’s flagship, which for me begs the question: why not do something revolutionary then? However, JLR’s response to “revolutionary” is simply adding a third row of seats, which they claim are “just as pleasant as the first two rows.” Doubtful, but nevertheless, it was sad to see the company focus so little on capability and focus solely on their vehicles being a status symbol.
It is what it is, though, and I suppose that if this allows Land Rover to continue operating, so be it. However, I just have the feeling that losing sight of your heritage completely and ignoring what a large percentage of your long-term owners desire may not be the best idea.
So with that, I’m curious what your thoughts are on the design of the new Range Rover L460 (fifth generation)? Do you like the direction Land Rover are heading, and do you agree with the style changes made for the new flagship Range Rover? Let us know in the comments below.
