About this video: The fifth generation Range Rover (L460) has been anticipated by the world over the last few years. We’ve known for a while that Land Rover we’re gearing up to move out production on the L405 and start their new flagship model’s production for the 2022 model year. In fact, historically, a new Range Rover design has been announced every 10 years (excluding the transition from the Classic to P38A models). Each model usually receives at least one design refresh halfway through it’s model lineup with a “final edition” being made for the final 3 production years. This has now happened on a number of Land Rover vehicles, including the beloved L322 Range Rover.
Over the last ten years, we’ve been blessed with one of the greatest mixes of luxury and capability with the Range Rover L405. At its launch, it had enthusiasts questioning the path Land Rover was taking; however, over the last 10 years, the Range Rover full-size L405 model has proven itself to be a proper Range Rover to most. However, the focus has now shifted once again. Let’s sit down and talk about our thoughts on the new L460 fifth-generation Range Rover redesign for 2022.
Now more than ever, it’s obvious that Land Rover’s priorities have shifted from capability to luxury. This was something that was becoming apparent after the L322 model left production and the L405 rolled out to customers. The focus on luxury with capability started to fade, and it became clear Land Rover were beginning to play into the Beverly Hills shopping trolly that they had become known for due to their popularity with celebrities and high-status individuals.
The Range Rover name now represents so much more than just a Land Rover with some leather seats. Now, to most people, a Range Rover is (unfortunately) a status symbol. The days of it being the ultimate off-roader are long gone, which was easily apparent in their press conference. When the Defender was announced in fall of 2019, they made an effort to show off its capability and refinement. In the press conference for the new Range Rover design, Land Rover notably quoted Coco Chanel along with discussing their vehicle’s popularity among the elite.
This wasn’t what enthusiasts like myself were hoping for; however, I believe to some extent, we all expected it. The design, feels more lazy than ever, and to me, this model feels like a refresh of the outgoing L405 model. The overall shape and design is quite similar, and the interior (to me) feels like a downgrade. It feels that now the Range Rover has its interior pulled from a high-end Jaguar F-Pace with some options added by Land Rover.
To me, it’s just not right. Land Rover noted that this model was their company’s flagship, which for me begs the question: why not do something revolutionary then? However, JLR’s response to “revolutionary” is simply adding a third row of seats, which they claim are “just as pleasant as the first two rows.” Doubtful, but nevertheless, it was sad to see the company focus so little on capability and focus solely on their vehicles being a status symbol.
It is what it is, though, and I suppose that if this allows Land Rover to continue operating, so be it. However, I just have the feeling that losing sight of your heritage completely and ignoring what a large percentage of your long-term owners desire may not be the best idea.
So with that, I’m curious what your thoughts are on the design of the new Range Rover L460 (fifth generation)? Do you like the direction Land Rover are heading, and do you agree with the style changes made for the new flagship Range Rover? Let us know in the comments below.

I agree with you for the most part. Personally the design to me is nicer than than the l405. But I completely agree with you on where Land Rover is going. I have an l322 that I have had since it was new. To me their has never been a car like it to this day. As I said I like the l460 better than l405 I still think the l322 is better than both. The l322 has true opulence inside. Not just the Materials but the seating position, big windows, commanding view. Ect. It’s what a Range Rover should be. The l405 feels like every other suv with its small windows and low seating position. That to me makes the car what it is. And Land Rover only cares about selling cars not the actual design and the people enjoying them. It’s sad because those special points that differentiated rovers from the rest of cars is now gon and they aren’t as special. Not sure if you saw it but in 03 Land Rover made a video talking about all of this and how these points are crucial for Range Rover to be what it is. I will send it to you on Instagram.

I like the new Range Rover however this is why Doug Demuro bought a new defender instead of a Range Rover.

The Land Rover was the Harley Davidson of the motorcycle! Land Rover was singular. Now, like you said, is another brand competing with another. Now Land Rover can be compared with another car.

And one more thing: I miss the big windows! The LR322 was the real designe, including LR3 and LR4

As an L460 owner and previously an L405, I can say the L460 is better than you think it is.

Land Rover are no doubt in the process of increasing their product line which is understandable for them to survive. On the other hand, Land Rover should have kept the Defender for the Land Rover line and L322 for the Range Rover as flagship style for their Heritage and Image purpose. Similar to Porsche keeping their 911 and Mercedes keeping their G Class.

I bought mine new and took it off road the day I bought. Just saying. People will buy this, throw tires on it and climb mountains just like they have done with EVERY OTHER RANGE ROVER before it.

Good point. But since the 80% of the target are the likes of the Kardashians no wonder it has headed this way. Generaly - as long as they do make the money so that they can keep afloat, is better than ending up as Saab which persisted of staying the way they were. They woke up with the newer 9-5 but it was too late. All in all, there will never be any classier Range Rover than the L322. It was LR's swan song. BMW started of with a good design, LR facelifts improved the L322. No L405 nor L460 will ever beat the feeling you get when stepping into the old faithful!

I personally hate the new look! It looks like a fat Velar. For me the L322 2006 was the best looking Range Rover and the L322 in general was the best. These new ones just look bad!
