I was so lucky to get a few months ago a Kilkerran 8 sherry at rrp. Was so hyped about it and it didn't let me down. Really good distillate, good casks and good people working there. Looking forward to taste another releases and hope you get some bottles too Phil, I'm sure they will not disappoint you.

I was recently in Taiwan and got to taste a Kavalan Madeira Cask made for a whisky group at cask strength. My goodness; such a dark fruit galore. My wife (who does not drink whisky) loved the nose. I was on the hunt for a local whisky and was dancing around the idea of buying one but pulled the trigger when she wanted me to buy it. It's now my Luxury Whisky (in reference to your 15 Essential Whiskies video). Chose that over a same-priced Springbank 10, which may be my next buy. That, or the Victoriana.

Lucky! I have a family member who lives in Taiwan and is only about half an hour drive from Kavalan, but he's a recovering alcoholic so unfortunately cannot supply me with anything (which is fair enough, but unfortunate!).

I'm in the USA in the state of NC and because of the ABC (alcoholic beverage control) system lots of great whiskies are hard to find... while I was out looking and hoping to find any Bunnahabhain I could get my hands on, I nearly fell on the floor when I saw an Octomore 14.1, while on my bucket list I'm now getting ready to strap in!

Thanks for sharing, Phil! Great list. I am after the Hearach too.. indeed quite expensive for a still pretty young one.. but I have been on the Isle of Harris in the distillery just a year ago and enjoyed the Gin.. the Whisky had not been bottled yet.. so I am eager to try it 🙂

Another great video Phil, my friend has all 3 Kilkerran 8s. I actually gifted him the bourbon cask which is my favourite. We did a blind with all 3 + the 16 and 12. I would say the top 3 were the ex bourbon8-port 8- KK16. The Sherry was only chosen over the 12. I’m not sure the liquor laws but we’ve been buying bottles from the auctions in Scotland and shipping into Canada. A few bottles I recommend would be the 2022 longrow 18, Talisker 11 diageo special release, and the vintage 1980’s glenmorangie at 43%. I got into whisky big time because I started off my journey with your videos and purchased most bottles you had reviewed. Those 3 I mentioned are a few of my favourites thus far.

My CS bunnha 2022 version was a decent around €75 the price for the 2023 bottling as really jumped in price, not buying. Am going to buy the new Benromach CS 2013/2023 though. Slàinte Phil.

Hey Phil! I just found your channel in the last month and have binge watching since! I’m coming from a bourbon background (Kentucky born and raised) so it’s been fun learning about whisky. I’ve been able to find Springbank 10 & 15 and I also bought a Laphroaig 10 to challenge myself. I also found a 14 year old cask strength Craigellachie independent bottling. All of these whiskies have been a super fun challenge to get into and learn from.

As far as I know, Kilkerran isn’t called Glengyle, because in the years that the Glengyle distillery was lying dormant, another brand in Speyside used the name Glengyle for their bottlings. So when the Campbeltown Glengyle was reopened by JA Mitchell, they couldn’t use the name anymore. Hope you’re able to find the 8yo! I was lucky enough to get a few bottles, at a really good price in the uk of about £65 a bottle. It’s incredible stuff.
@FirstPhilWhisky
@FirstPhilWhisky 7 месяцев назад
Ah makes sense. I thought it would be for some random legal reason. I still think they should change the same though. Amazing, what a good price! Looking forward to trying it.
@cascode1192
@cascode1192 7 месяцев назад
Ironically, the original Glengyle distillery was founded by a member of the Mitchell family. However as is often the case it went through many changes and reversals before being shuttered in the 1920s. The brand name was acquired by Bloch blenders, but they were later sold on and the name now belongs to the Lomond Group, which owns Glen Scotia! Frank Hardy tried to buy the brand name back when they were reviving Glengyle but the Lomond Group would not sell it.

It's a nice line - and they're really all great - but everything except the Lead 10 is either very expensive or out of stock - even in other markets. (in Hungary the 3 bottles of Springbank are raffled off !!! and in Kilkeren12 or sometimes 16 there is 1 piece per person - there is also the German market where a few things are available) :-G Oh and the prices - 42 euros in Germany 64 euros in my country . Huge price difference! If a Scot went into Tesco in Hungary - he would have a heart attack from the CHEAP whiskey prices, which are twice the price outside!

I don't think I will be this lucky again in my life, so no hopes in that department. 3 I got a bottle, it is pretty good. But it is not much better than the 10 yo imho. When I finish the bottle I will probably just buy the 10 yo again. 4 Not hard to find in my country, and I love Ledaig, but there are many 18 yo's that are cheaper and I wanna try too. 5 is not released in my country lol I gave up a long time ago.

When you say you should add a little water to dilute cask-strength whisky, silly question; but how much water do you add? I recently bought an Aberlour A'Bunadh Single Malt at 61% ABV which I’m going to open for Christmas😊
@jbar6284
@jbar6284 7 месяцев назад
Not a silly question, but no one can really answer that question for you. What most people recommend is to first try the whisky neat--but be careful at that high strength as it can damage both the sensors in your nose and/or mouth/tongue, so only gentle nosing and small sips at full/high strength. Then you try adding perhaps a few drops of water, try the whisky again, and proceed until you find where you like it best. Practice makes... for a lot of fun. The water will change the whisky as you proceed, so in effect you're trying different versions of the same whisky in your glass, just by adding varying amounts of water. If a few drops are not enough then you can try using a teaspoon. But do keep sniffing and tasting as you go, and leave sufficient time for the water and whisky to interact--particularly the first time you add any water--before adding too much more.

Did you just say that most Speyside whisky is mediocre? 😂. That’s fighting talk. There are so many really great distilleries there with Aultmore and Linkwood two of my absolute favourites, always worth checking out as IBs. And of course, GlenAllachie is just immense with a great range of official releases. Given your other selections here it’s probably worth you adding Meikle Toir to your list too, it’s the new GlenAllachie peated brand with a few different expressions in the first batch of release. I would happily post you some Kilkerran’s from Scotland if you think they’ll make it across to you. The bourbon 8 is the real champ of the various 8s for me.

Yeah true. That was too generic of a statement. All those whiskies are excellent too. Speyside does have 50 distilleries though, and there are a lot I have passed on. I guess a lot of them are made to go in blends rather than primarily for single malts.

I'm not really hunting anything nowadays. I retired this year and after collecting malts for 30 years I'm settling in to enjoy the stash. Besides, I promised the missus I wouldn't spend so much on spirits anymore 😁 #2 and #1 - multiple bottles in the stash 👍 Ledaig 18 is a great whisky. Surprisingly, in the most recent edition of Michael Jackson's Malt Whisky Companion (now written by Dominic Roskrow and Gavin Smith) they only rated it as 78/100, which goes to show that some so-called experts have about as much sense of taste as a brick.

So let me get this straight. These are whiskeys that you're struggling to find, so you thought it would be a good idea to make a video telling everyone about them, so then all your subscribers become your competition? Well... all I can say is "good luck"! 😁

what is the iodine/medicine smell and taste from a whisky, is it the peat or smoke that gives it that smell. I'm new to whisky so a little help would be great.
@jimit.4220

Yeah a lot of heavily peated whiskies have iodine notes.

I bought a Lagavulin 16 and it's a great dram, I'm curious as to wether this is as strong an Iodine impression that is out there and what would you recommend that isn't as peaty. Thankyou for the reply by the way.

@@jimit.4220 For me it's maybe a bit too much an intense flavour, what being new to whisky, would you recommend anything as the Lagavulin 16 is my first purchase

That medicinal aroma and taste is most noticeable in Laphroaig. It is a particular and famous facet of that whisky’s profile. You may get it in some other peated whiskies, but not to the same intensity. Many peated whiskies, particularly those from Islay, have a briny, seashore aroma which is similarly iodine-like, but not as pungent or medicinal as the Laphroaig signature. Peat and smoke are interchangeable terms in reference to Scottish whisky - they mean exactly the same thing. “Peated” is the term you will hear respected critics use.

@@chickenofthecave7046 If you are looking for a more moderately peated whisky may I suggest Benromach 10 or 15. It has a softer peated character that is often described as “bonfire smoke” or “barbecue smoke” rather than “medicinal and maritime”. If you want to try a very mildly peated whisky try Tomintoul With a Peaty Tang (yes, that’s the name). It’s a Speyside whisky with a very gentle character and the peating is delicate. It’s not too expensive either. It often gets overlooked but it’s a very pleasant malt whisky.

Another great video Phil! I walked into a shop and they happened to have the Kilkerran 16 and the 8 Sherry and the 8 Port…..so I spent way more money than I thought I was. 😂 I might not search out another 8 Port but I will definitely hunt for the 16 and 8 Sherry. Happy hunting my friend! 🥃

Theres been so much hype behind "Isle of Harris" Gin. It sells out everywhere instantly and rrp is 50 quid. The amount of people that come into the shop I work in St Andrews and ask for Harris Gin is ridiculous. And i think that put them in an incredible position for the Hearach and meant they could afford to let it age longer.

Well i stopped hunting the kilkerrans, i have now a lifetime of supply from kilkerran. I am not joking. Just bought them radomly when i came them across on my whisky shopping and unnoticed i have gathered many. They are nowadays harder to find because they are a replacement for Springbank. I would ship an 8 year sherry CS to you if you like but i am not to sure if it will reach you from Europe with all customsregulations and transportrestriction (i have to see which services do still ship alcohol abroad)

Mnay distillers make and sell some gin to help with cash flow. Not many will pay an inflated price for a young whisky.
