For those asking about Super Mario Maker 2. Good question! I think the game is really terrific, but overall I appreciate it more for what it accomplishes and all the content it provides versus what I personally got out of it. I didn't have time to play it much after the review, so it didn't end up being a super big personal highlight for me this year. I always try to go with games that do something unique or really capture my attention. It's a 100% subjective list (as all my lists are).
Please talk about zelda OOT 3D on switch with MM all in normal 2D HD. Nintendo would do it IF you make a video about it. Please #arlo you're our only hope!
Fire Emblem was also a surprise for me, the combat and story really caught me off guard and the characters are amazing. Definitely recommend for someone looking for an rpg
i have a question.. is the damage in fire emblem 3 houses randomized? or is it fixed? like if your sword damage is 17 then its 17 not for example 17-24 damage?
nomar maccac It’s attack minus target’s defense (resistance for magic). So if you have 15 attack you’ll do 10 damage to an enemy with 5 defense (unless you double, in which case you’d deal 20).
Even though Smash Ultimate didn’t win Game of the Year, I could not be happier that Luigi’s Mansion 3 got some sort of recognition, even if just in the all Nintendo section.
I was deterred by the BS scoring system. I was constantly getting Ds although I never died and was pulling off loads of combos. It seemed broken to me.
Buff Muffin I feel like Astral Chain was one of those games that looks very niche to the average person, but once it came out, everybody started recommending it. So it’s clearly a great game, but some people need more convincing
When your mom looks over your shoulder when your watching youtube and you have to awkwardly explain to her that your favorite youtuber is a blue puppet that talks about video games 😂
My Top8 Switch Games of 2019:8:Ring Fit Adventure, 7:Mario Maker 2, 6:Gensou Skydrift (A Touhou Themed Reskin of Mario Kart Double Dash) 5:Luigi's Mansion 3, 4:Digimon Story Cybersleuth:Complete Edition, 3:Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition, 2:Fire Emblem 3 Houses, 1:Astral Chain
That is true...Astral Chain is kinda forgoten... What was considered an amazing game and solid GoTY contender, doesn't even reach NSwitch RU-vidrs' top games of the year... And it was good non the less. I am glad that at least my other favorite highlights of the year (Super Smash Bros ultimate and fire Emblem) were as critically acclaimed as we expected them to be (or even more than that)
If you like every mission being kill the leader or kill everything its fine. Same as if you want to customize everything. I would rather they had actually made interesting maps and have a lean, fine tuned gameplay, rather than the unfocused and easy mess that it was. Basically IS confused complications for complexity and the fans ate it up. It's a big step down from Conquest in bringing interesting gameplay to the table.
Probably has very little to say about The Game Awards. Pretty uneventful, the biggest thing was the Xbox Series X, nothing real substantial from Nintendo.
My top 7 Switch games of 2019: 1) Mario Maker 2 2) Dragon Quest 11 S 3) Fire Emblem: Three Houses 4) Luigi's Mansion 3 5) Astral Chain 6) AI: The Somnium Files 7) Yoshi's Crafted World
I love how much more personality goes into the videos when Arlo is on screen. The affected (at least I hope it is affected) low self esteem and self deprication go a long way to make Arlo relatable.
Arlo, you must try Bug Fables, which is Paper Mario 64 remixed with bugs on PC. For all your plights with Paper Mario's direction, it's your remedy, and it's severely underappreciated and unrecognized despite exceeding both Paper Mario 64 and TTYD in several ways, namely combat and writing. For an indie game, it's impregnably dense, the story goes for long enough, it shares Paper Mario's clever and pithy dialogue, the combat is strategic and intricate and can be very challenging (without frustration), almost every NPC has a side quest at some point, and there are over a dozen optional bosses which manipulate the battle system in creative and thought provoking ways, so that a full run can easily expend fifty or sixty hours. I'm sure you would adore it, and I hope you at least watch some videos of it after reading this comment.
Of this year's releases, the best game I've played is EASILY Draqon Quest 11 S. It exceeded my already-high expectations for it in so many ways. It took what was a great base experience and refined and expanded on it marvelously. For my money, it's a top 5 game on the entire system. It's the perfect example of what Switch RPG can be and should be given a go, especially for those who feel that Sword and Shield fell well short of its massive potential.
Agreed... I typically struggle to pass the 10 hour mark in games without losing interest, yet I'm 120 hours in on dq11 and tempted to keep playing even though I beat the post game last night.
@@teeby2037 it's a great stand-alone game.... Really the knowledge of other games just adds to it ever so slightly (adds some meaning to the final ending, but you can look up an explanation... And then the tockle quests that let you go back to moments in old games, but that's a side thing)
@@teeby2037 Don't be. You do not need to be well-versed in the series to enjoy the best of what this game offers. While there are references to previous games, especially in the Switch-exclusive area of Tockleton, you can take on every task in the game without knowing much about the series at all. Don't let that scare you from trying out this superb title. You won't regret it, and it's likely you'll become a new Dragon Quest fan in the process!
That was your first fire Emblem game? My God dude! You HAVE TO PLAY: Fire Emblem shadows of Valentia and awakening on the 3ds! The sound track in awakening takes it to another level, shadows of Valentia has good voice acting and great music and story.
It sucks that you didn't have the time to play lots of games this year, but the amount of time you spent on making videos instead really shows! I've loved every single video you've put out this year
2019 was definitely the year of games I wish I played, and every time I sat down to play a game, I just watch youtube videos about games.... what is happening brain
My top 7 games of 2019(in no particular order): 1. Luigi's Mansion 3 2. Untitled Goose game 3. Super Mario Maker 2 4. Pokemon Sword 5. A Hat in Time 6. Fire Emblem Three Houses 7. Cuphead
I'm so confused about your tastes based on this list. What kind of person likes both modern pokemon AND cuphead? You must be a very interesting individual
According to my Switch, my top 7 games are: 7. NSO SNES games, almost entirely due to a link to the past and Super Metroid. 6. Doom 2016 5. Witcher 3, which is saying something because I've only had it for 2 weeks 4. Octopath Traveler 3. diablo 3 but notibly I also play that at my friend's place. 2. Tales of Vesperia. Gamble Cast FTW. 1. Smash. No surprise there Also this is my first year owning a switch, I don't have BOTW, and I haven't touched pokemans. I love what I played of odyssey, but I mostly play hand-held, and I'm terrified of accidentally throwing my switch on public transit. Maybe now I got a switch lite I'll give that a go portably, but it really would be nice of them to just make optional motion controls... I love gyroscope aiming a lot, but dang does some of the waggle tech scare me. I just want to throw cappy, I don't want to throw my joycons!
@@KhaosKontroller I know. Problem is I have a pro controller sitting at home, and it is begging to be used. Hopefully this holiday I'll finally make some headway, I was really enjoying it!
@@TheAlibabatree fair enough. It does feel like I am playing on an old CRT TV, but not in the good way! But I only barley made it into Skellige on my original playthrough, and the story and combat is still the same. There's no way I'd be making it through the rest of the game, let alone the DLC, without being able to side quest in between classes.
My Top 7 Games of 2019: 1) Astral Chain ❤️ 2) Super Mario Maker 2 3) Okami HD (just got around to it) 4) Witcher 3 5) Link's Awakening (omg so cute😍) 6) Smash basically counts as 2019, right? 7) New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (fight me it was actually pretty good)
The bad textures was one of the things that made me really worried about it before it came out. The game turned out amazing, but there are a lot of times it's really noticeable, especially when it affects character textures like Mercedes's outfit.
Well the overall graphics are fine, but man... There are low-res textures absolutely everywhere. So much so that it can be distracting while playing on a 4k tv.
I got a little excited when he started singing to be honest. Can we get like a video that releases on Christmas of him singing? I really wanna get my groove on for the holidays
Happy holidays, Arlo. This has been a great year so far. Thank you for all your videos and congratulations for another year of great work! I haven't played all the games on your list, but Fire Emblem, Untitled Goose Game and Luigi's Mansion 3 are definitely on my list!
My list: #1 Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling (Game of the Decade if you ask me, dare I say one of the best games that has ever came out.) #2 Don't Starve: Hamlet (Does DLC count if it's practically a new game?) #3 Forager #4 Dicey Dungeons #5 Later Alligator #6 Shovel Knight: Showdown (Not had time for King of Cards yet.) #7 The Legend of Bum-bo
Ben Franks besides AC, i feel DaemonxMachina was a pretty big letdown...AC because it didnt really tap into the mainstream/people that dig Bayonetta, and Daemon because it isn’t MechWarrior, close, i really like the art style, but its all over the place
I wholeheartedly agree with your number one choice, Luigi's Mansion 3 is *the* best game I've played this year as well! The game was so fun I beat it in under a week! I personally like Dark Moon, but I found LM3 to be the true successor the original Luigi's Mansion
Arlo we love you too much to call this video “bad”. Just having some midly entertaining content from you any day, is enough to make my day ... any day 😆
Glad you at least mentioned Dragonquest XI. I got it on blackfriday and its fast become my favorite game of the year. I can not express how joyous and emotional it makes me.
A moment of silence for the games not mentioned in this video: Yoshi's Crafted World Super Mario Maker 2 Pokémon Sword & Shield Astral Chain Cadence of Hyrule Link's Awakening
Oh arlo I've said it before and I'll say it again, your videos are just so well made and you are very entertaining to watch. Thanks for always keeping me cheery!
This video felt kind of sad. xD Cheer up Arlo! This video was still fun just cause it has you in it! ;3 You beautiful blue muppet man. I hope you're having a good December!
Loved this video!! I relate to your inability to play a bunch of games this year. Time is finite, but you managed to make a fan of me this year by putting out a bunch of fantastic videos!! Keep it up man!
Man this video got depressing at the end. I feel you Arlo, my gamer days are also a shadow of what they had been in the past. So many games so little time. And even worse they are not just games, they are genuinely great games that one just cannot get into.
Nah liked this video alot. It's very honest but fun! I think alot of us have a massive backlog so its fun to see the games you DID play! Also a video showing your backlog would be cool!!
@@SuiteLifeofDioBrando Even without any sort of "leak", it wasn't exactly unreasonable to expect some kind of Smash reveal, or something of a similar caliber, to happen during the awards.
@jesus barrera You got an _official source_ on that claim? 'cause a January Direct isn't guaranteed you know. Also, it's only the "last fighter in the Fighter's Pass" *not* the last DLC fighter, there's still more after this.
My top Switch game for this year is easily DQ11. There's just so much to love: Beautiful graphics, fun characters, solid turn-based battles, an interesting if somewhat meandering story, a ton of content, a large map to play on, Eric's hair--the list just goes on. It does have some major flaws, but it was just a great experience.
While not directly pertaining to this video, if there is any way to fit more small skits and live action Arlo sections into the videos I think I'd be great. They seem to have become less frequent as time has gone on and I'd love to see another video like your "Switch Unboxing."
How did this game come out and barely anyone talked about it??? I just looked at a trailer and it looks incredible! I had no idea this even existed until I saw your comment, so thank you!

I know it is not actually a new game, but I enjoyed playing Ni no Kuni tremendously and spend too many hours on it. It was released on the Switch for the first time this year so that is why I had never played it. You can really feel the love that went into that game.
I think my favorite Switch games of 2019 would have to be... -Pokémon Sword -Disgaea 4 Complete+ -Link's Awakening -Spyro: The Reignited Trilogy Not sure of the order, but it's definitely those four games. Pokémon... is probably on the bottom of the list though because even though it's probably the one I will ultimately end up having played the most by far because it's Pokémon and I'm addicted, it's also... honestly *really* disappointing. Funny how the other three are all remakes, though. And for both Link's Awakening and Disgaea I do consider these specific remakes the definitive way to play them. For Spyro... I mean, the Reignited Trilogy is better than the originals in a lot of ways but also inferior in some such as *the stability of 3 in general,* but the Switch version is very definitively not the best version of that game. If anything it's the worst. Though still a damn impressive port considering that the game was made for the PS4 and the Switch version manages to look *almost* as good as that.
This is a lame list. This is why I miss when Arlo talked about NOT Nintendo related games. It felt like he cared about a wider variety of genres & platforms rather than just stick with exclusively one company.
I'd include Assassin's Creed Rebel Collection in a top of 2019 list, for much the same reasons as the Witcher 3 port. First of all, you can hardly beat the value. You're getting 2 games, Assassin's Creed 4 and Rogue, for the price of one with all bonus DLC and expansion campaigns. And these are some of the most critically acclaimed AC games of all time. But I also think they deserve to be recognized for sheer tech value. Assassins Creed 4 was originally a launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 back in 2013. And now here it is, with barely any compromises, running smoothly and looking gorgeous on the Nintendo Switch. I think it really puts into context how far we've come and how powerful Nintendo's little battle tablet really is.
Arlo I’m in the same boat as you, I’ve never played a dragon quest game and I haven’t even played too many rpgs in general(their usually too complicated for me). But after seeing how hard DQ11S was marketed I decided this was the time to jump into the franchise. I’m in the middle of the game and I got to say after learning about some of the options and mechanics I’m totally hooked. The story is so good, it truly is an epic journey and the characters are so likable. As I’m going through it I’m always getting a sense that the game is special and an instant classic. If you ever find yourself with extra time to play, I highly recommend it. Just be prepared to play for many hours haha.
Dragon Quest 11 is an fantastic starting point to those who never played an Dragon Quest game or an RPG in general. It's simple and easy to understand, yet still challenging, offers so much content and evolving the grandfather of RPG'S in the modern hardware while still being as formulaic & source material as it once was.
On that VRV bit, I'm watching the demon girl next door! It's a super wholesome anime about a girl that makes a lot of cute noises "fighting" a magical girl!
