Wow. Yeah. Undertale just doesn't have an award. Two people and multiple revisions and no one caught that. So just pretend there's a trophy onscreen that says, "A Little Goes a Long Way" or something like that. (GIMME A BREAK IT'S BEEN A LONG YEAR)
Speaking of Undertale, have you checked out Deltarune? It's a new game from Toby Fox that is meant to be played after Undertale. It's not necessarily a prequel or a sequel, but it does expand upon some of the gameplay elements from Undertale. I recommend giving it a try.
Arlo at least buy OST of Octopath Traveler if you not gonna play all the way through because its a crime for not hearing at least few of the top tier music that is the best OST of 2018!
Reminds me of a certain company with a certain franchise that once had a crossover event with Sonic and recently had a crossover with Tetris, I think the last mainline game was called "idiot idiot 7"
This year was soo good for indies. My top 5 games of the year: 5) Splatoon Octo Expansion (really did live up to the hype) 4) GRIS (stunning watercolour world, affecting story, fun platforming and light puzzles) 3) Dark Souls (my first time discovering Lordran, this game is so much more than just the difficulty) 2) Celeste (incredible, challenging platformer with a surprising, touching story about overcoming anxiety) 1) Hollow Knight (one of my favourite games ever, and the one game this year that I put on the same pedestal as BotW and Odyssey on the Switch)
Yes!!! I'm so glad someone else adored Yoku's Island Express like I did!! Simple metroidvania pinball with a super cute character, in a world full of brilliant colors. Just loved it!
I have a feeling 2019 is going to be yet another strong year for Nintendo, maybe even to the fantastic 2017 levels. My game of the year would have to be Hollow Knight for the Switch. Anyways Happy New Year everyone!
From someone who has 100%ed Hollow Knight and all its DLC, including defeating every boss without taking a single hit, let me tell you: Keep at it. You'll get better. Eventually you'll look back at Soul Master, or "some wizard guy" in your words, and be baffled you ever had problems with him. trust me there are way worse bosses in that game. Luckily most of them are optional.
1.Pikmin 4 2.Thousand Year Door 2 3. Metroid Prime 4 4. Chibi Robo 2 5. Pikmin Warriors 6. Splatoon 2, Octo Expansion V2 7. Luigis Mansion 3 Wait this is 2019......Dang it.
I'm so happy you finished Dark Souls, Arlo. Now you're truly a gamer worthy of respect. The sad part is that no game is going to feel nearly as satisfactory after this one (not even the sequels or the clones). You, like the rest of Dark Souls "survivors", are now cursed to forever _chase the dragon_ of video game challenge.
Yoku's Island Express is such a delight, I'm so glad I took a chance on it. It sadly got a bit overshadowed in a year that was just PACKED with truly great indie games (Celeste, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Into the Breach, The Messenger, Return of the Obra Dinn, CrossCode), but Yoku was a joy from start to finish.
Arlo, I wish to bring a game to your attention. It's called Dust an Elysian Tail. For only 15 USD on the Switch eshop it's a massive steal. The game is far better than anything you can imagine. I beg you to give this truly underrated gem a chance to be given the limelight
I’m sooo happy yoku got on here!!! Oh my gosh, this game is amazing! And so underrated! It’s got great music, art style, and gameplay... just seeing your gameplay brings me back to a trip I took over the summer, as I got this game to play on the plane for it lol... it’s so good!!!
Pleaaase finish Hollow Knight. It is my favorite game thus far on the Switch, even with BOTW and Smash Ultimate (both of which I adore). It's, bar none, my favorite Metroidvania. The beginning is suuuper slow, but once you get the first couple of mobility power-ups, the entire world opens up tremendously. If you like the older 2D Metroids, you will absolutely adore this game. The bosses might be my favorite in any game. It's Metroid mixed with Dark Souls, and not in a clickbait "dArKsOuLs" way.
@@apemayor3046 The Radiance is eh. Not too bad after you bang your head against the wall for a little while. Nightmare King Grimm and the Absolute Radiance, however? I'm too much of a coward to even attempt those again.
Awesome video as usual, but you REALLY gotta beat Hollow Knight. You're depriving yourself of one of the best metroidvanias of all time. Personally, I think its waaay too packed of content for a game that's 15 bucks but I'm not complaining. I have over 200 hours of gameplay and I'm technically not done with the entire game (105% out of 126%, as there is DLC) Did I mention its hard? Wait, you already know that. Trust me, its hard but just like Dark Souls, that feeling of satisfaction when you beat that boss (that doesn't require cheesing) is just invigorating. To top it all off it's lore heavy and has multiple endings. If it was in this video, it'd have the "Definitely Really Good" award.
How you explained yokus island express is EXACTLY how I would explain my feelings of celeste. I have never played a game where I could just be completely filled with joy and play for 70 hours without finding a single flaw in it. That game night be my favorite game of all time. I'm surprised it's not on this list, unless you didn't play it
Hey Arlo, I think you'd like a game called Gravity Rush, the remastered version and sequel is on PlayStation 4. You play as a girl named Kat who can manipulate how Gravity Affects her (mainly the direction she falls) essentially giving her flight. It's just a joy to explore the towns with the cool movement you have, and has a interesting story. I've yet to finish to finish the first or sequel, but so far, I think you'd really like it!
My list (in no particular order) 1) Spider-Man 2) God of War 3) Digimon Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Memory 4) Super Smash Bros Ultimate 5) Hitman 2 6) Shadow of the Colossus 7) Dragon Quest XI
"It cut through the layer of pudge that so many hand-holding modern games have insulated me with over the years and demanded that I..." *Don't say GIT-GUD* *Don't say GIT-GUD* *Don't say GIT-GUD* "... become skilled."
I was so glad Dark Souls made its way onto the Switch. It's the first version I ever completed NG+ and beyond on, due to the ability to take it with me to work and on the go. I hope they port DS2 and 3 as well.
Love your channel, Arlo! I'm getting my three-year-old daughter into video games, and she's asking to watch your videos all the time! 😁 I'm really surprised that you don't seem to have talked at all about Ōkami HD now that it's on the Switch. It's the definitive version with (or without!) excellent motion control, it's beautiful, it's big, and it's ZELDA. Truly, Ōkami is my favorite Zelda game, and I'm shocked that you (and I could be wrong here) don't seem to have played it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it! Keep making great content, we won't miss a beat! 👍
I get you, I tried to make a top 10 games of 2018 list but then I realized that I had to stretch the definition of "released in 2018" (many were remasters/remakes/rereleases) to even get to eight or nine games, so I ended up just doing a top 5 5. Celeste 4. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3. WarioWare Gold 2. Assassin's Creed Odyssey 1. Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu Needless to say, there's still a lot I need to play
If I had to pick a single best game for this year in my book (beyond the obvious), it would, without a doubt in my mind, be Celeste. Celeste was nominated for GotY for a good reason. It's beautiful level design, serious yet relatable character development, challenging yet fair gameplay, and boatloads of post-game content mean that after almost a year and over 110 hours of gameplay I *still* have yet to get everything. On top of all that, Celeste is only $20! It's a complete steal! If you have yet to play this game, buy a copy on whatever you game on. Celeste is also getting a physical release and some final new content soon, so it's a perfect time to get it. Definitely my game of 2018.
This is my favorite top games list of 2018 that I've seen on RU-vid so far. I think it's so sad that other people who have made top 10 lists have neglected some of these....like Yoku's Island Express.
Hey Arlo, started watching you in 2018 and if you have not played this game on the 3DS then I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s called “Fantasy Life”. It’s a open world RPG that has 12 different “lifes” you can play through. That game is probably the one I’ve sunk most hours into on my 3DS and if you enjoy it, then hopefully you can do a review on it.
I prefer this style of year wrap up, with the pseudo-awards, to a simple year end list, so kudos on the format especially. (Also, huzzah, this is about the only list I've seen my #5 of the year - Yoku's Island Express - on.)
Happy you mentioned Hollow Knight at least, it's easily, without a doubt, the best game I played this year and honestly earned a spot in my top 10 favorite games of all time. I hope you continue playing it.
Honestly my favourite game this year has to be this little indie rpg maker game called Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. A fairly difficult, unique, very long, and disturbing rpg available on steam. It's honestly probably in my top 10 favourite games now, it's that good.
I had gotten Yokus Island Express for Christmas and didn’t know what in the world it was. Now I’m playing its post-endgame while I watch this video and was pleasantly surprised by its inclusion. It made me break my streak of playing Smash Ultimate daily
9:56 - Haha. “Git gud, Arlo!” But seriously now, Dark Souls is a truly difficult game to figure out, but when you do, it’s a lot of fun. I’m glad that you thoroughly enjoyed Dark Souls, Arlo! Dark Souls is one of my all time favorite games!
I wish more people played starlink. It was such a fun experience, I absolutely fell in love with the game. I hope the sales were enough to at least get some DLCs, with new planets and more stuff to do.
That "Wizard Guy" is pretty hard. Explore more, get more stuff and go back to the boss if it's difficult; the more ya do before, the better off you'll be versus bosses.
Re Games that may be coming out in 2019: Bayonetta 3's still out there too. Not to mention a year of Smash DLC. It's almost like 2018 was saying "Rest up; you're going to need your strength."
Awesome list Arlo; not what I would've picked, but that's the great thing about lists like these. Everyone has different game experiences from year to year, and it's interesting hearing that of others other than yourself. You've at least mostly convinced me to try out Yoku's Island Express and Dark Souls FWIW, so yeah; you did a good job selling those titles coming from someone who's played neither :)
Prime 4 is first quarter 2020 at best. If we'd seen some gameplay by now I'd say differently, but 2019 is already filled to the brim with no need to rush it out.
Yup, I also cam to the closed off city with the wizard dudes and man, i became genuinely frustrated for a good bit after dying and trying to traverse that area time and time again XD. I hope to get back to it and continue that amazing joy of a challenging game
1. Pokemon Let’s Go (really don’t understand what everyone’s gripe with the games are, I absolutely love them) 2. Wolfenstein II 3. Crash HD Remastered Trilogy 4. Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle (Mainly for Captain Commando but I like all the games). In all honesty that’s all the 2018 released games I played as I spent a lot of time with Doom & Mario Odyssey this year (both released in 2017). Not played Smash yet but looking forward to it!
Samuel Coe people don’t like let’s go because it removes most competitive aspects of Pokémon, the graphics are just the hd versions of the sun/moon ones, it is way to easy, it is purely meant for causals, the catching system, and mew being locked behind a $50 paywall
Hoon Jumbro What is the most competitive aspect of Pokemon that’s been removed? It’s only too easy if you use type advantages all the time, you are free to use weaker Pokemon and make it challenging for yourself/not use any items. I’m a hardcore Pokemon fan and to me it’s perfect!
I want to apologize to you. I commented your last video "might be the worst you've ever done". While I disagreed with it, that was rude and harsh. And I am sincerely sorry. Your content is QUALITY. I am happy someone like you is part of the youtube gaming community. You legit make the world a better place. So, thank you. :)
Starlink _would_ have gotten my touch of magic award, but when I got the starter pack for switch, mine didnt actually have the game inside, so instead, I gave it the "how did this even happen" award
My fav 7 games of 2018 in order. 1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Country 2. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3. Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee 4. Celeste 5. Super Mario Party 6. Bayonetta 2 7. Dead Cells
Hollow knight is one of those games that really gets better the farther you go. I was blown away by some of the final areas and how the game just kept going! And if you can beat dark souls you can beat the ‘wizard guy.’ Though he’s definitely not the hardest boss in the game.
Me: Man, I wish Arlo would talk about Hollow Knight. The way he loves well constructed atmospheres and characters, Metroidvania style progression systems, and fair combat and puzzle challenges just makes this seem like the perfect game for him (and the perfect game for everyone else btw go get Hollow Knight*). Arlo: Honorable mention to Hollow Knight. Haven't finished it yet though! Me: Oh. Ok then. Maybe there's hope! *Everyone, PLEASE get Hollow Knight. It's cheap (and goes on sale like every week), it's on Steam and the eShop, the music and art are gorgeous enough to sell the game on their own, the combat and movement are buttery smooth and enticing, the progression system keeps you invested and wanting to explore, the story and atmosphere and characters creep their way into your soul like a good book, and oh my God just everything about this game is amazing. I'm waiting for that review when you finish it, Arlo.
Yay! Yoku's Island Express definitely goes on my personal top 10 games of 2018. I saw it at GameStop and didn't much of it. But later on I downloaded and played the demo, and I knew I had to have it. I'm not a Metroidvania guy, but I just fell in love with the style and music and gameplay. It would be a 10 out of 10 if not for the fact that it's sometimes frustrating to control because of the pinball mechanics, but it's a fantastic game nonetheless.
