Really interesting concept for a video John. I used to love watching Harold Lloyd. That bit with the clock always made my feet twitchy. Ahhh Metropolis. I only know about it being a massive Queen fan. They bought the rights to it. I haven’t seen many silent movies. I really should correct that. I’ve always wanted to see Der Golum. I was fascinated with it when I went to Prague. Nosferatu is the best vampire movie out there… still… even today. Great video John. Really enjoyed it.

Cheers Lisa, I've been meaning to do this list for a bit now and I can imagine I could do another 10 great silent movies video sometime 🤔🤩 the Clock scene is nuts Lisa 🤯🤯 climbing up the side of a whole building 😳😳👍👍 Metropolis as a movie is incredible 👌 yeah Der Golem is such a great looking movie!! The look of it is so watchable 👌👌👌 yeah I don't think they could ever top Nosferatu for look and feel Lisa 👌👌 thanks for watching Lisa 🤩🤩👍👍

This was such a good video John and you do know your stuff. I’m a Queen fan and know what your taking about. I don’t actually own any silent movies but I do remember watching a few back in the day but I can’t remember what they were called. Excellent video. Also the art work is Fab on these too. Speak soon.😀👍

Hey John, what a great video and I applaud you for speaking so passionately about those films, that so many dismiss! You gave a great overview of the genre, checking most significant filmmaker from back then. I think three more big ones that are worth mentioning & recommending, and I can imagine you would approve, are: Sunrise, Phantom Of The Opera (1929) and Häxan. The first two Silent Movies I had seen were Nosferatu and Chaplin's The Kid. I cant imagine a better introduction, since those are so unique and different from todays filmmaking and are just a ton of fun, even for the inexperienced viewer.

Cheers Scmkar 🤩🤩 appreciate that mate 👍👍 I've liked Silent Movies for quite a while now and have really got into them in say the last 8 or so years ago, some utterly amazing Movies that need to be given a watch as people could be missing out on some gems!! 🤔👌👌 I have Phantom (which is brilliant) a lot of people talk about Sunrise and Haxan they are on my list to pick up for sure 😁😁 The Kid is one of my favourites too!! So emotional at times!! 😔 I fully agree that they offer such amazing things that everyone should at least try a couple before dismissing them! 😁 cheers again Scmkar for this great comment mate 🤩🤩👍👍

Hi John, that's a really interesting topic and one I was particularly interested in considering I've recently ventured into the world of silence (something rare for us married men) and you've given me some good suggestions and quite a few of those I've recently picked up. So far I've seen The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and I can only echo your thoughts on this one. Wings, which was spectacular with some incredible world war 1 airborne dogfights. My favourite one so far though has been Sunrise which would be now right up on my all-time list of greats. Cheers John and thanks for the entertainment.

Excellent video; really enjoyed that. I was a bit surprised you didn't include either of Lang's Dr Mabuse films, but it must be hard to pick a ten. Must give a nod also to Buster Keaton's brilliant and poignant short 'Cops', and to an early Lon Chaney vehicle 'The Penalty' from 1920, which was put out by Kino Lorber a few years ago. The ending is a bit disappointing due to Hollywood conventions, but worth seeing just to witness what the star put himself through to bring these characters to life.

Yes John! Nosterafu (1922) with Max Schreck in title role was the most scary version of "DRACULA" . The make-upwas outstanding! I like Bela Lugosi in the talking role but this one was the best one! Love "Metropolis" from director Fritz Lang. Tge BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS MOVIE OF ALL TIME. KING KONG(1933) was Second! I loved the Joan of Arc(1928) film. Closest to the novel!!! I would put earlier films of DW Griffith "Birth of a Nation"(1915)Intolerance (1916). John Barrymore Dr. Jeykyll and Mr. Hide(1920). Wonderful performance. Started as an actor on the stage. 1890's when films were just getting started. Yes Conrad Veight a very good silent film star who transferred to talkies. He gave Norma Scherer her academy award for "The Divorcee". He transitioned into dramas in the early '30's.

Great video John. I'm definitely going to give a few of these a watch bud, I noticed a few of them are on youtube like you mentioned. The Man Who Laughs is a movie that really interests me, with it inspiring the joker. An I'm looking forward to watching the chaplin movie modern times. @@MondoChelloveckMovies The Man Who Laughs is a wonderful film, I agree. Strictly speaking it's not a silent film, but a half-way between silents and talkies. Completed in 1927 the studio delayed release for a year following the success of The Jazz Singer in order to create a movietone score for the film (which is included on the MoC disc). In a reversal of that, I would also like to recommend Vampyr, a 1932 film by the great Carl Th. Dreyer (Passion of Joan of Arc) which was supposed to be a talkie, in three separate versions; German, French and English. Due to the difficulties of doing this the dialogue is minimised, and intertitles are used. The film is shot in a very similar way to a silent film, and although a flop at the time it's one of my favourite 'silent' movies. Over here there's only a DVD from MoC (assuming it's still available), but Criterion have it on blu-ray for the region-free-ophiles!
@MondoChelloveckMovies
@MondoChelloveckMovies 3 года назад
Yeah I know what you mean about Man who Laughs and the time it came out, there is a sort of talkie of Phantom of the Opera as well.. I think they tweaked the movies to hopefully bring them into the new age 🤔 but wow!! Vampyr!!!! What a movie!!!! 👏👏👏 8 have the Eureka dvd and it's kind of the closest silent movie in talkie times 😉😁 yeah it's wonderful it should have got a memorable mention!! I think I might have to do another 10 silent movies video someday 🤩🤩 cheers mate 👍👍

Cracking video, John, and some really interesting choices. I've got a handful of the Eureka MoC silent films but not watched them all yet. Faust and Nosferatu are my favourites so far, and still got Wings and the John Ford double pack to go. I've just ordered Joan of Arc and Frau Im Mond based on your recommendations here. The Man Who Laughs will be next on my list. Clearly so much more to explore, though! All the best. Will

@@MondoChelloveckMovies Just a quick one to say thanks so much for the Joan of Arc recommendation. I was blown away! Edit: OMG, you have it! 19:56 Edit: 2 out of 3 so far! 24:11 Ding-ding-ding-ding-ding! The scene where Nosferatu lifts, stiff as a board, out of his coffin is FANTASTIC!

Great video, John. I first got into Eureka because they were the only one seemingly doing Silent movies on DVD, and I wanted decent copies of Nosferatu and Metropolis (I had them on VHS, but they were from public domain 8mm prints, so pretty bad). Great Top 10, there’s a few there I would like, but I’m going to recommend Fritz Lang’s epic Die Nibelungen, if you have seen it. Granddaddy of all fantasy filums!

Hi John, thoroughly enjoyed this video, I have a fair few of these, I actually ordered The Hands Of Orlac yesterday, your right Buster did injure himself in The General he actually broke his neck under the water tower Wien the torrent of water was released, (he didn’t realise for some time after though) a few recommendations in here, I need Victor Hugo’s The Man Who Laughs. The Cabinet Of DR Caligary was a film I had to study in film school, along with a lot of early German cinema. Metropolis is a stunning movie and an essential addition in any collection. Nosferatu was another I studied. Well I can’t fault any of your choices there mate and yes I feel exactly the same watching these films in awe that everyone has since passed on but their legacy will live on in these beautiful pieces of art. 👍😀👍

Just so fascinating to me 😊😊 I would to have studied movies at school, sadly there was nothing like it in my Borstal.... sorry school 🤣🤩🤩 yeah we have talked about the fact that these people are long gone but still have a huge presence in todays movie world which is great!! I forgot about Charlie Chaplin loved him from 1912- 1931. Then The Great Dictator character in Modern Times? Although it is a racist story and hard to watch, you really have to include Birth of A Nation. It was the culmination of the art of cinema at that time, and its historical significance should not be altered by omission.

This is quite spooky mate..... I've just bought that today from CEX 🤯🤯 I'm aware of all the problems around this film, but I'm going in level headed and I consider it a time capsule of the time it was made 🤔 how strange is that mate 😱👍👍

@@MondoChelloveckMovies It's sort of like a master class in cinematic storytelling. If you have the chance, watch both Birth of A Nation and Cabiria in any order, and you will see what I would say are the starting blocks of feature cinema.
