Hello lovelies, I have been buying so much vintage makeup on eBay, and I have recently started to build my vintage compact collection. I find it easier to purchase vintage makeup in lots on eBay because it is way more affordable. I did, however, buy a few individual pieces like this fantastic 1950s compact with a lipstick holder and a 1920s compact that looks like a mini purse. Let me know what you think of this collection and if you have a favorite. I am so excited to build on my collection.

How elegant it is when a woman pulls from her handbag a beautiful compact powders her nose and apply lipstick...definitely a head turner!

Hi Laura! As a museum collections assitant I work with older cosmetics like these and I would avoid using the original makeup as they can contain pre regulated materials such as Sodium lauryl sulfate, Parabens and other harsh chemicals. These chemicals can really damage and irritate your skin. However if you were to empty and sanitize those compacts, you could refill them with modern powders that use original formulas (like the airspun loose powder). Hope this helps! Love your videos!💕
@Laurajaneatelier

Thanks Sabrina! Does a lot of modern makeup still have these chemicals or perhaps they weren’t as harsh as they used to be
@sabrinaforrester1946
@sabrinaforrester1946 5 лет назад
@@Laurajaneatelier A lot of modern makeup still has some questionable chemicals in them, parabens for example are preservatives that help to extend the longevity of makeup but have harsh reactions to various skin types. Makeup only became regulated in the early 1950s and 60s so manufactures before then were not required to post an ingredients label like they do today. This leads to all kinds of bad chemicals getting thrown into older makeup. I always recommend reading labels and doing research on any modern brands before you purchase! 😊

Sodium lauryl sulfate and parabens are FDA approved ingredients still used in products today. The former is a surfactant that removes dirt and oil and the latter is a preservative commonly used in liquid products to prevent bacteria growth. They're pretty harmless ingredients, and your shampoo probably even contains both of them, even though the sulfate may dry out your hair depending on your hair type.

The Pink Mary Kay is from late 70' / early '80s. It is refillable so you can pop out products and clean compact. I sold Mary Kay and that's exactly what was being sold.

The Estee Lauder One is from 2004-ish.It is from the Erte Art Deco Zodiac collection. I have the cancer one I purchased in 2004-ish. It has a cancer crab playing the piano ( I am a pianist). I use it and get so many compliments on it. You can still get refills on the Estee Lauder site. The "small" size. Sadly, if you lose the puff, you can not get replacements. I would buy a pack of them if available. I collect compacts as an accessory item. I am very choosy though. I have three currently.

I'm very late to the party, but I watched another young lady try on vintage makeup a couple of years ago. She used a heavy layer of moisturizer, then a heavy layer of silicone-y primer to fill in her pores before trying it on. She said in a later video she didn't wear the makeup long and she washed and used witch hazel toner to sanitize her skin essentially, she had no adverse side effects. Also, a lot of antique lip stick tubes were made to refill. You kept the tube then you could buy just the stick of lipstick cheaper😉

I would only risk that (and I would not) IF the makeup was unused and not rancid. I make my own unscented tinted lip balm by combining generic lip balm with vitamin e and lipstick; I heat and pour into the empty container.

Lisa Eldridge did this! She’s a professional makeup artist though and when she did do a makeup look with the vintage makeup, she triply protected the skin! And she was also using makeup that had never been worn. She did it I believe twice and was fully aware she had to be careful and not do it again.

I really enjoyed your video on Vintage Lady's Compacts! I've been collecting them for about 20 years & I have about 80 vintage compacts, about 18 Vintage Carry-Alls & about 6 Vintage Evening bags. I also collect Este' Lauder compacts & have about 30 of them! I especially love the older ones I have that are pre 1950. I have a book that has helped me a lot with the values but it's an old version & I'm sure it's somewhat out of date. They are on EBay & written by Roselyn Gersen. Collecting these lovely compacts & carry-alls are not as popular as there were about 15 years ago. I love them! My favorite Vintage Compact is one called Der Kiss, it's a German name but was made in Italy. That one is worth the most. I even have an antique glass cabinet that I keep them in. The very large compact that you showed that was a cream color with flowers on the side are usually called Flapjacks... for obvious reasons! I even have a Compact that is round like a ball. I'm hoping to find, one day a Compact called A Bird in the Hand, designed by the artist Salvador Dali but they are very difficult to find...& are usually broken! With all of there compacts & carry-alls, I never ever put any of the powder or rough or lipstick on, not even to try on my wrist! These old cosmetics can have cancer causing chemicals in them plus most are spoiled! I always clean mine out completely! However I do have one that has. Lipstick still in it that has never been used, so I kept that one intact! It's also in an unusual tube, it slides the lipstick up & down. I hope you keep up your collection ! I love finding them in antique shops or flea markets! EBay sellers tend to mark up the prices! Have fun & if you gat any more compacts, please show them to all of us here! Thank you for showing your collection!

A few ideas for videos would be: 1. A video featuring vintage cosmetics made for women of color specifically. 2. A video featuring vintage feminine hygiene care, or feminine care products marketed to woman. Thank you for the lovely well-thought our videos you produce. I appreciate the hard work you put into these. It is much appreciated by me!

I have a lovely guilloché enamel compact from the 20’s. It’s gorgeous in a light blue starburst guilloché design and the body is made of sterling silver. It was like $180 but I use it EVERYDAY!!! I simply melt, pour, or press whatever it is I’m using at the time inside.

I’m so excited I think I want to start collecting vintage compacts. Because of this video I realized that my late mother in law’s compact that I have displayed on my vanity is actually a 1960s vintage Stratton Loose powder compact with the extra flip top lid it even has some traces of her powder left inside which is so sweet it does not have the powder puff anymore. Excited that is my first piece and most special to the collection thank you for sharing

This made me happy. I found a Djer Kiss (1929) compact in my grandmother's oddities after she died, and I have kept a light blue enamel Coty compact since I was a teenager (the mirror got smashed and I cannot bear to get rid of it). Yours are nice because the sizes are small to average (palm-sized). I do Internet searches on marks or company names to get an idea of the date.

That's an amazing collection you've acquired! I'm also a compact junkie, and I think I have some more info about some of your compacts: The little purse compact is a dance compact, those were huge in the 20's(I'm sure there are loads of info on them in that book), and I'm still on the lookout for one myself(they can be quite expensive!). The Heather rouge you have I think is from the 50's or 60's - I have a few of them with differing packaging - something to note is a registered trademark symbol(a circle with an R in it) that's usually at the end of a brand name, those weren't used until 1946, so that will help to date it. The American Beauty from Elgin you have looks similar to one I have from probably the 40's. I don't know if you noticed, but when you open it, on the side that says the brand, there's a little button on the right and a hinge on the left, and when you push the button to the right it will pop open! Also if you can't find a patent number(those are great to find out exactly when something was designed and consequently made), another good research tool is an old advertisement for the product - if the ad has a date that'll tell you when it's from(or you can tell just by the style of the ad). I hope that helps in your collecting adventures. And thank you for showing that book, now I need it!

Your dress is soo pretty*-* I love this video. My favorites are the giant 30s floral and the 50s purse compact, but they are all gorgeous! Somebody already said Lisa eldridge, she has a few videos on vintage makeup where she actually used it, I think its her BIBA videos where she talks about skinprotection in more detail. As far as i remember she used a heavier moisturizer and then a silicone primer (but pls dont quote me on that lol, not an expert). Since you mainly have powders I think it might be good to also use a heavier foundation and maybe some powder before putting something this old on. Thanks for sharing, your videos are always lovely! This is my educated guess for Anna's compact. Given the way the address was written as well as the phone number, it could be from the 70s-80s. She lived in West Palm Beach, Florida, but the FLA abbreviation is never used for correspondence anymore, just the standard "FL". Since she didn't include her area code, they still used local dialing. Area codes became mandatory in like the late 90s/early 2000s when cell phone use increased & the companies ran out of numbers. Five people could have the exact same number but the difference was the area code.

Honestly, I would just thoroughly clean out whichever compact that you want to use. Try a vinegar solution and spray with rubbing alcohol. This should disinfect the surfaces. Q-tips will also be helpful. As for trying the makeup on your face... I would put a thick foundation on first. Perhaps, primer, thick foundation and wash right after. It might even be a good idea to spray rubbing alcohol on the makeup first to disinfect it. I’d look for a strong rubbing alcohol, like a 90% usp. Don’t do the 70% stuff. It probably won’t be strong enough. Other than that, good luck lady. 🙂

That book sounds wonderful and I love your collection- I'm considering getting a couple from ebay myself - the vintage compacts are just so beautiful, it's sad we stopped keeping makeup in these compacts. About how to wear the vintage makeup- ages ago I saw lisa elridge try out some brand new previously unused vintage makeup (so she was opening the seals herself) and I think she just made a point of using a very heavy base. I would imagine something like a nivea cream or vaseline, plus a foundation primer and strong makeup setting spray would work (I.e. layers upon layers to keep the vintage products away from absorbing into your skin) not sure if it would be safe for putting on your eyes though- that could be scary in case there are germs in there!

As enticing as it may look, there's no way i would put vintage makeup or skincare on my face or body period. I miss a lot of makeup and skincare from the 60's, 70's, snd even the 80's. One thing i did notice, i ordered gee your hair smells terrific from the vermont catalogue, and honestly, it didnt smell that terrific, and in fact, it made my hair feel like it wasnt really clean. And i remember i loved that stuff.❤

I was curious about your compact at 2:25. I looked it up, and it seems to be a Mavis Vivadou product. Everything I found said 1920s, so you were spot on! The Power of One Designs website was where I found another powder container of hers. Such a wonderful collection!💕

Love your videos. I love old compacts and have some. Please do not actually use them the bacteria that would be present is concerning. I filled mine with my powder. I think ladies were just so much more feminine with their clothing and make up in the past. Your dress is so cute also.

Maybe if you put a thick foundation before you put the old makeup on, then wash it off as soon as possible when you've done the video.

Someone mentioned that Estee Lauder sells refillable compacts but I think they are small. Does anyone know of any other companies that sell them? Things can get rough in my purse and I'd hate to ruin an antique lol.

5:57 What is inside of that compact? I would have liked to see what was under that cap.
