The winter is coming and for the first time in my life I’m not afraid of losing my accomplished ability to play golf. I feel like the Rip Van Winkle of golf. I’m seventy and had last played golf consistently in the early 1990’s. I played the Black Course in Beth Page and had memorable moments. I always thought it could be a US Open course , which it did become. The tees and greens are so elevated that I worried that people would be falling all over the course. I started marathon running in 1995 . I did eleven NY Marathons in a row before suffering a pinched nerve in my left neck. I did fourteen marathons, 13 NY and one NJ. I think I love golf more. I’ll get up in the morning to play golf but not to run. Golf ain’t easy by any stretch of imagination. My muscles all over my body ache. But it is a good ache.

I was thrilled to see this video with the Stack & Tilt guys…I do really like the way you incorporate the Stack and Tilt method with your teaching / instruction…it’s easy to understand and it’s easy fun to incorporate your instruction into my own swing for much improved results….with that damn club in my hand. I love golf but I only love it when my swing is hitting the ball where I’m aiming. I do have the Stack Tilt videos and book as well…I agree those guys are great instructors with methods that actually work well when implemented correctly…your instruction adds greatly to their methods and teaching. That’s all.

I sincerely appreciate your kind words regarding this fantastic system and my way of conveying it! This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance Stack and Tilt system is designed to provide a lifetime of great ball striking, and since it is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everything in between, and inclusive of the best players in the world. I give all credit where it is due - including Homer Kelley for writing the "technical manuscript" based on empirical data from the game's greatest ball strikers, Mac O'Grady's unique observations and instruction, and Andy and Mike for analyzing, interpreting, and assembling the science into a digestible format. I just do my best to take what they have built and transpose it into my own simplified teaching style (which, of course, is fully on display in the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school). Thanks again for your ongoing support, keep up the great work, and have a Happy, Healthy, Birdie-filled 2024!! Tom

awesome video...cool to see you psyched about this swing. Watched your pre-week video and looked forward to this one. I took these tips to the range today and after warming up with some wedges, I could feel it click about 5 balls into my irons. Much more consistent point where club bottoms out. Takeaway felt good; the most challenging parts to get used to were the follow through..keeping it low as you're turning left, and downswing with pushing off with the trail leg pretty straight rather than spinning your foot, and sliding your hips forward more than rotating them. But I could string together more consistent shots than usual...Can't wait to test it more next time and see the nuances for the wedges, and driver (like fighting the urge to not let the shaft get too shallow in the backswing when keeping the hands closer to the body).

Great advice. Some people like myself grew up playing baseball. When I was young I was told that I had a hitch in my swing. Which made it difficult to hit the baseball. This rolling of my wrists upset the swing plane. Crossing over to golf to be with my father I was challenged to then hit the golf ball. The swing most like baseball was the swing on the tee. The ball was positioned in the air like a baseball. It was much easier to hit a ball on the ground. But in the air I couldn’t feel very confident about hitting the ball. So I wanted the ball close to the ground. Keeping the ball close to the ground helped to calm my nerves. I never would allow myself to tee the ball higher than the top of the club head. I never imagined swinging the driver simply in the air and never touching the ground. My drives were a leap of faith. A desperate emotional need to hit the ball. To do so I had to manage a swing without a true sense of form. This morning I finally faced a deep psychologically embedded state of emotion and can now face my fears of swinging my driver in the air based upon 10,000 written words on the golf swing. My labored intellectual effort has saved me from the exhaustion my extreme emotional state would inspire after my miserable shots would occur. Tom I have yet to see you concentrate on the driver. Maybe I simply haven’t gotten around to it yet. Thanks for being there
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Hi Frank, There are certainly similarities between baseball and golf, but there are also some key distinctions that might explain why MLB pitchers typically make better golfers than their position player teammates! Here's a driver video I released earlier this year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_xl47-9p1YU.html. This may help you a bit. But really my online school is the way to go if you want to get on track to really taking ownership of your swing. It's a steal at just $10/month, and it'll walk you through everything from soup to nuts in self-guided fashion. Perhaps you'll consider giving it a try in advance of next season? By the way, my dad grew up in Syosset and used to play Bethpage Black for $13 in the pre-Open days when it was not quite so well-groomed and most golfers were afraid of it. He said it was the most physically demanding and mentally exhausting track one could ever imagine! Ciao! Tom

Great video Tom. I have the same in to out issue so it's interesting to see the fix. Back in the 80's we used to call the sweeping draw a 'Draper'...as in drapes moving from one side of the window to the other... mirroring a big draw moving from the right rough to the left rough. You could offer me a million bucks for a fade and I couldn't do it. I took your lessons to the course the other day and had great success accept for the driver. But, I'm sure that's not unusually. I'll keep at it and join your school to get more information.

Hi Boyd, The Stack & Tilt swing is a very body-friendly method. For me this is supported by my personal experience as a player, and furthered by the fact that the majority of my students are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. Should you wish to give this swing a fair shot by learning it properly, please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only platform that really simplifies the process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. This is pure gold! ⛳️🏌🏻 I've been to golf schools (but it's been a while) and they are so enlightening. It looks like your swing is shorter now, kind of "sawed off" at the finish. Is this something you learned at camp? Can't wait for your upcoming videos of more nuggets you learned from Andy. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻 p.s. I occasionally move my right foot on the downswing too, like you did a couple time 😏(I assume from keeping your weight left) My friends say "your foot slipped" 🤔
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it, Mike!! The "sawed off" finish is a trademark look of a properly executed Stack and Tilt swing. I had been getting closer to achieving it and Andy's teaching certainly accelerated the process!! As for the right foot thing, that was a drill given to me by Andy in order to put the brakes on my hips and transfer the energy to the club. You could liken the move to that of a bowler or a hockey slap shot. So this was more of a feel I was trying to ingrain and not something you'll see me do in my normal swing. Thanks! Tom

Hard to divine what hes teaching and how to make the changes watching a video. Im envious. Wish I could spend a couple days with an instructor of that caliber. As it is, my 2 fractures in my lower back are less and less of an issue. I went today to work on my transition and shallowing the club and added about 20 yards to my driver. Irons are doing much better too. Not bad for 65 and still athletic.

@Greenballed - With regard to the grid and other swing-related complexities, it is up to me to dig into and comprehend the Einstein stuff. I then translate it into the language that I speak in order to convey it in the terms that you've grown accustomed to. That's what I've been doing all along and will continue to do - including with the new information I've garnered from the school! Now this is not to say that I won't make available more advanced "graduate level" courses in my online school content for those who wish to explore the depths of the swing, but I will not deviate from my mission of teaching a consistent, powerful, low-maintenance golf swing in a simplified and body-friendly manner! This is an amazing video Tom! A couple of questions: 1) does the bump forward with the hip create the tilt on the downswing or does the tilt on the downswing create a bump forward with the hips. I struggle with this though I feel like it's the former. 2) the comment about the shoulders not turning but rather a function of tilting and extending is awesome! What does he mean by the shoulder joints being a power source. Is there a vid on that anywhere?

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it, Kevin! I've currently got some basic grid info and ball flight rules in the online school. When I begin to build out more advanced levels of the school I'm considering including bite size pieces of the grid spanning multiple lesson videos since taken all at once it would be too much to digest. I will also teach elements of it to my more advanced students during private instruction. Due to the complexities I do not foresee the grid making any appearance here on the free channel beyond the occasional mention or reference. By the way, here's a link if you have not yet enrolled in the school and would like to learn more about it: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. Ian, It is not likely that I will get into too much grid detail here on the free YT channel. What the heck? You're in FL and stay inside preparing your own meals? Ha. Well we're in a Covid world so probably smart. Good video and very informative. The s&t swing has really helped me with my irons & hybrids. I'm hitting more crisp shots than ever. I can still hit a thin one here and there but not as many. I don't think about the s&t so much with my woods tho as I hit natural draws with them anyway. But the s&t may have moved into my swing with those naturally. I'm sure my version of s&t is not perfect. I still don't get my arms as far behind me as you show. But what changes I have made has really helped. I basically try to stay on top of the ball(no sway) and tilt my left shoulder down a little on the backswing. Then fire my hips through on the downswing. Thank you for such good info. Jesse Franks too.

Really a quality video, Tom. I noticed on a few of your swings that it looked like you had your right foot pulled back at address into a closed position. Was that my imagination, or was that a technique you were employing to promote a certain feel? I do that sometimes with my driver to help me take the the hands in more and shallow the path going back.

I'm glad to know that you enjoyed this episode, Jim!! As for the right foot thing, that was a drill given to me by Andy in order to put the brakes on my hips and transfer the energy to the club. You might compare this move to that of a bowler or a hockey player's slap shot. So this was more of a feel I was trying to ingrain and not something you'll see me do in my normal swing. Thanks! Tom

Good stuff. Tom Im a 70 year old golfer from UK. Been playing for 54 years. Was single figures but now off 15 due to age, lack of length and crap putting. The simple tip about getting more weight of the front foot has helped me. it reminds me of a coach 50 years ago called Mr X who used to talked about the" right shin post" and would demonstrate it with simple stick man drawings in Golf monthly mag. Anyway. I struggle now with length and getting up on the par fours means a lot of use of my three hybrids. Can you do a vlog about using the stack and tilt with hybrids? I only carry irons from 5 to sandwedge and tend to use hybrids from 150 yards and above.

Tom, Great video as always and looks like you had a blast. Really good stack-and-tilt geek fest! Question: In one of your videos you talk about Hogan's "Magic Elbow" and talk about keeping the right elbow tucked in during the the entire swing. I tried this and developed a "janitor" (sweeping) hook. I also noticed you were working on correcting this in your own swing during the S&T event in Miami. Can you add some thoughts here? An important topic methinks. Thanks. Keep Crispy.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Try presetting this elbow position at address but allow your trail arm to remain straight during the takeaway, keeping just the upper arm and not the elbow attached to the side of your chest. Due to this preset your trail arm should fold properly as you get further into the backswing, and the elbow should be a few inches from your side at the top. This will have you in a good position to start the downswing. If you exaggerate the elbow connection to such an extent that it stays glued to your side through the entire backswing it could potentially cause some issues. Remember also that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school. For example, you may have already had yourself on a good downswing path, and then by incorporating this lesson you got too shallow and started hitting the sweepers. (By the way, I've got lessons and drills specific to this downswing issue in the Fixing Common Swing Problems section of the school.) The things I worked on in Miami with Andy are too advanced for me to convey here without sowing confusion. That's the type of in-depth content I'll use in my private lessons, and it will ultimately find its way into the online school once I translate the "geek speak" into something that fits my instruction jargon. Yours in Crispiness, Tom

So have never understood how the circle of the shoulder turn and hip/body turn need to have their axis aligned, but seeing it in action with the clear examples suddenly clicked to me. Now that the torrential rain has stopped, went outside and hit a few into the net with my one length clubs, hybrid and 7 iron (the 7 iron is a 7 iron length). Putting those two circles directly on top of each other and adding a little hip bump was like adding rocket fuel to the swing. instead of an out of synch slow mo old man swing, it's now a raging inferno of speed. Hi, Tom. Your videos have absolutely changed my golf game. Still have a lot to work on but this past round every single approach landed on the green and some were within inches of the flag stick. My driver is a big hit or miss as is my woods. I will either bomb them both long and straight or struggle quite a bit. I think I will visit your site and sign up for classes but I've also been looking into the Moe Norman swing. Im curious what you think about it. I've heard he was the best ball striker in history and I see players like Bryson use his swing but just watching it, the grip and set up look unbelievably uncomfortable. Would it be ideal to adapt that sort of swing and try to normalize it for myself for my driver and woods? Thanks for any tips. Keep growing! Best instructor on YT by far.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Hi B C, While the Stack and Tilt swing I teach shares the single plane feature, it is definitely different from the Moe Norman version and for this reason I do not recommend crisscrossing between the two methods as it would certainly lend itself to confusion. This should not be construed as a knock against Mr. Norman's renowned ball striking prowess or the style of instruction that he inspired; it's simply that components of his swing style are not compatible with S&T. So my best suggestion to those who are weighing these two methods is to choose one or the other, but not both! Having said that I do hope you will consider my online school for just $10 US/month because it sounds like you are just a few tweaks away from really taking ownership of your swing and your game. Linguini dish looks so good! It seems like Tom was working on a change in one of the most fundamental aspects of his swing, the plane. Saguto golf videos Emphasize swinging inside, both taking the club back on the inside and down from the inside. ALWAYS with the goal of staying out of the casting over the top Death Zone. Now Tom's swing to the top looks considerable more upright and the downswing more steep. He even spoke of using the lateral hip moment as the engine that drops the hands into to slot on the downswing. These changes seem to be movement toward a two-plane swing and away from the stack and tilt one-plane system that has been the core concept of Tom's teaching. Tom is a genius teacher so I'm certain that I'm wrong and confused. Can someone please tell me what I've got wrong?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 года назад
Definitely not departing from Stack & Tilt, Don. The lateral targetward movement of the lead knee and hips is a key element of the S&T swing. It's this transitionary move that gets the club tracing the same plane on the way down. It may "feel" like it's being dropped into the "slot" for those golfers who are chronically steep, but and that's the only reason I would make mention of the word. Here's a lesson video related to this topic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0IxI_qmaF_A.html

Hi Isaac, If you were to crack a whip, the "crack" occurs when you slow down or stop your hand and the trailing tip of the whip dramatically accelerates. That's what's going on here with the "braking" of the hips, transferring the power of the body motion to the business end of the club. @SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 месяца назад
Hi Jake, In very general terms, the answer lies in ball flight laws. Clubface angle relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. From there we can then do some reverse engineering to identify and neutralize the cause of a sideways shot. With regard to your hook tendencies, there are just too many potential variables and unknowns for me to make an accurate diagnosis. For example, if your path was previously too steep and you were making compensations to prevent the ball from slicing off the planet - perhaps a very strong grip or setting up with a closed face - then those compensations could certainly result in a hook if you have successfully corrected your path. Other things to consider are your ball position is too far forward, your hands are too far back, your weight is not forward enough at impact, more..... While there are certainly videos on my channel that address a number of these potential causes, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of the swing system I teach as well as an introduction to my formal instruction style. @SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the video, Rick!! Here's a driver video lesson that may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_xl47-9p1YU.html Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) They don't start with - or maintain - enough weight on the front side. In general with the driver we should add a little more front weight load at address - more like 60/40 instead of the 55/45 prescribed for the other clubs. This forward weight should gradually increase to the top of the backswing (70/30) and build further on the downswing - approximately 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. 2) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. 3) They are not allowing the length of the driver to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The longer shaft of the driver encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as you take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as you maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around you, it should put you in the proper position at the top so you can attack the ball from the inside. Beyond that, , if you'd really like to own this swing through your entire bag please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. Tom: Thanks for the quick response. We share a similar sense of humor (for some people). I am sure that your parents were called to school quite often. On the other hand it has served me well as a trial lawyer to loosen up juries. The driver has always been the bane of my existence as I hit it long all over the place. I watched your referenced video and my problem is with the downswing. It was my understanding that in the ST you are not turning your lower body but rather tilting one way and then the other. That method works great with the irons and certain rescue clubs but not with the driver. In your driver downswing you clear your left side the same as a traditional swing to give your swing room. I do not see the tilt with your hips on the downswing but a turn of your left side away from the ball. Something is not right??? Thanks for your time! Rick

A quick setup question. If you close your left eye at address and look at the ball, where does it appear relative to you nose? Find I tend to like my head down, so my nose is below the ball, BUT I think I swing better when the side of appears level with the ball.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Not sure I completely understand what you are asking with regard to ball position relative to the nose, Jim. In the prescribed setup for the Stack and Tilt swing the hands hang directly under the chin and the back is rounded slightly forward from bottom to top so that the neck and head are tilted more downward, enabling you to see the ball without straining by otherwise having to look out of the bottom of your eyes. (Paraphrased from Chapter 3 of the Stack and Tilt book by Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett.) I hope this helps to some extent! Tom

Hi Matt, You have some leeway with ball position. I like the simplicity of keeping it consistent relative to the inside of the lead heel and adjusting the stance width depending on the length of the club. This works well for me and many of my students. Alternatively, the Stack & Tilt book prescribes a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and incrementally more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver. Cheers! Tom

I suggest visiting the Become an Instructor area of the Stack and Tilt website in order to begin the process: stackandtilt.com/instructors/ Thanks and best of luck to you! Tom

It seems like (from what I see) the ideal ball flight is a PUSH-DRAW. I also seems to me that a PUSH-DRAW comes from the two distinct paths the hands and the club take, as you describe with "the GRID". Can you clarify the PUSH-DRAW? ... I understand the "draw" is the desired ball flight, but how do you correctly "PUSH"? Thanks, Tom
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Hi Mike, For a RH golfer the push draw starts to the right and works its way back to the target. As you take ownership of this swing your club will properly be approaching the swing’s low point on an inside track during the downswing, and at this point you will then be on the correct path to take advantage of the preferred S&T “grid”. The grid tells us that if the ball position is behind the low point - which it typically will be to some degree on standard shots for all clubs perhaps with the exception of the driver - then a clubface that is open to the target line but closed to the downswing path will produce some measure of a push-draw. The degrees of in-to-out path and face angle will determine how much or how little curvature is produced. In general terms ball flight rules - aka shot shaping - are a function of clubface as it relates to path and target line. Clubface relative to target line dictates the ball's starting line, and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. Hope this explanation helps. There's much more aon this topic in my online school. Cheers! Tom

do loft and lie angles change with stack and tilt in comparison with a 2 plan swing method? for example, my original swing on a lie board suggested 2 degree up on my irons.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
Yes, because you're not lifting and you're swinging the club on a shallower angle, you might see a difference in lies. My suggestion is to get fit or test out your swing on a lie board. I went from +4 to Standard when switching from conventional to S+T.

@@SagutoGolf What errors in contact or ball flight did you experience with the clubs at +4 using S&T? What changes occurred when you adjusted them to Standard? My clubs are +5 presently and I want to know what to look for when I begin S&T.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 года назад
@@billricke8232 I changed my lies pretty shortly after switching to SnT. You can expect pulls and/or draw the ball too much if your lies are too upright. Swing wise, you might be making a compensation in the downswing to get the clubface to square up evenly with the ball at impact because the clubhead might be too "toe up" at an upright setting - your subconscious mind may try to make that clubhead level at impact by steepening your downswing.

Indeed, Thomas - If more people would give up their egos in terms of the name of the swing method they subscribe to, they would soon gain on-course egos from the resulting consistently crispy ball striking experience. Which matters most?? Just sayin'.... 😎 This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. What the "deniers" can't grasp is that if you watch any Tour event on TV you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. We continually and gradually load into the lead leg, Walt, so the answer to your question is none. You start with your weight forward (55/45 on the front side; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward.
