I don't know if someone else has commented this, but I thought it would help you two to know that rice crispy treats aren't just made with "cooked, then dried rice", it's puffed rice. You can puff up some rice in a pot of oil (or a deep fryer, same premise) and it pops like pop corn. Then you either use a second pot with a siv or (to be more safe) a wire spider strainer to safely pull out the rice after it puffs up. See "Jun's Kitchen" for reference. 👌 Uncooked puffed rice is more of a crunchy result (like in a crunch bar), pre-cooked puffed rice is what you'd expect from a rice crispy treat.

@@thomgizziz I mean... it's self-admitted, hence "science adjacent" being a regular part of the show. They're just a couple who are into crafting and sharing their experiences learning a new craft (oftentimes the hard way) or just making a cool project they wanted to make. I'd say "being consistently wrong" is a pretty good way to describe their methodology; Make, Fail, Repeat, is by definition trial and error. It makes good entertainment, and it's oftentimes educational (even if it's not how they originally intended it when attempting whatever they're making.) That said, failure and struggle are two of the greatest teachers anyone can have. Nothing quite teaches you a lesson like missing the mark. They've proven time and time again that they learn from their mistakes, it's how their format works the way it does. To round off that point, I want to add that they've regularly made Bob Ross painting videos and echo his philosophy of "happy little accidents." Just to clarify, my post wasn't meant to be an "uhm, actually". It was meant to be a "hey, since you guys were trying this out in this video and there were very mixed results, here's some techniques to help for the future." I love the work Evan and Katelyn do, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I just try to be positive or helpful any time I leave a comment. ✌

I think making a rice krispy treat from popcorn could be really interesting. It's a similar texture (as far as being a puffed grain) and you could make it with plain popcorn, buttered + salted popcorn, and then a third version with popcorn seasoning like chili lime or powdered ranch.

Ok so seriously, try this: Buy rice noodles (not all of them work equally well). Make sure they're rice noodles, not wheat ramen. Deep fry them in very hot oil (like 350F) for like 5-10 seconds. They puff up. Let them cool down and then make rice crispies with them. Hot tipp: you can also salt the deep fried noodles and eat them as a snack.

Oo! I like that idea! 🥨 P.S. I wonder if I can ask you a question [editor's note: ah, several] and I hope I'm not annoying you in asking [but if so, I apologise, and just don't worry about it, all good]... Are pretzels quite popular in Germany? I mean, they're pretty popular in many regions of the world, but I've heard (from non-Germans, mind) that it's especially so there. Like, er, tortilla chips in Mexico (and my friend group in Mumbai lol) or potato crisps in the USA... which, btw, they like pretzels but not as much as they love crisps (or straight chips & doughnuts). And you often find those big soft ones at the hot food section at stores like Costco, Target, and I think WalMart, though the latter two apparently have moved to installing full-on Starbucks _and_ Pizza Hut into the front end of the store. They used to have just big pretzels and Icee machines long ago... (I recently visited a friend who moved away to the Midwest USA, and yeah, it's...something.) Also, I visited a few regions of Germany when I was a teen (primarily München, but also a couple other stops, including a quite dour place whose name I'll leave out [funny story: we tried to learn for free by sneaking into a tour group, til we realised that we wouldn't learn much cos they were speaking their native German, lol]). When we were travelling through the countryside, surrounded by nothing but rolling fields of crops, the [English] tour guide noted that all the fields were "ALL maize", and that they were "for the foie grae geese, _cos Germans don't really eat maize"._ That stuck out to me. Granted, that was kind of a long time ago (before biofuels got giant, prudent to note), but would you say that's true or silly? 🤔 ...I also more recently (a few years ago) asked an Indian friend of mine about his experience in Germany, cos he was there on business at the time, and he lived in the absolute sticks. But he said he didn't know much. He kept to himself a lot, and he barely even spoke any German. (To be fair on that note, he was a hard worker, and was more of a business & engineer type than a... bubbly bicyclist type, idk lol. And with the program he was in, he just didn't have time.) Plus he was a dark man out in a rural area, so he felt quite out of place, _but_ fwiw, people were not unkind to him. So hooray for rural Germany on that note! ...at least as of a few years ago. (The USA is far worse, and my country, too.) If you don't feel like answering or even reading any or all of this, please don't worry about it! I don't want to offend you, nor waste your time. I just like to learn about other people and their cultures. I was always the "pen friend" type. (Facebook used to be awesome for that, before it went...you know.) But I assure you, my interest is not in a gawker way, like "oOo! Some strange, far-off land, with _weird_ people and customs!" I do mean the utmost respect. And this is as succinct as I could make this message! (I genuinely went through and tried to trim it down, but it ended up longer!) So either way, have a nice day - or rather, a good evening at this point. Danke shen, Freund! (I hope that worked right. At least it's probably obvious what I _tried_ to say!Thank you very much, friend!) And cheers!

@@mookinbabysealfurmittens Pretzels are VERY popular in Germany because that's where they're from. Particularly the south, which is where München is located. I'm impressed you spelled it München instead of Munich, by the way. :) I guess you could say Pretzels are to the south of Germany what bagels are to New York: you can get them in other places, but if you want to taste the real thing, you need to get them in New York (in the case of bagels). I'd love to try Pretzels sold in the US because I imagine they're nothing like what I'm used to. And we don't just have Pretzels made from that kind of dough and dunked into lye (that's how they get that beautiful brown crust). There's everything from baguettes, braided bread, regular round buns, shorter "baguettes" etc. It's the thing that I always miss the most when I'm on vacation. But you'll notice that any place that has lots of German tourists will sell this type of bread/pretzels just because Germans love to stick to what they know. We're the type of people to go on vacation and eat Schnitzel because that's what we know and love lmao. This comment was basically a love letter to pretzels. 😂

I absolutely love Germany, from the beautiful cities, landscapes, the culture, the amazing array of wonderful people who are so nice, even a clement climate! (Oh that's a tongue-twister. Hehe.) I wish I was better at learning things so that I could learn German and live there. Or even visit on holiday, but I can't afford it, and have no one to go with. But oh man, I remember we had to leave on the tour bus at 7am the first morning, and even grouchy-teen me (still never a morning person to this day) made sure to get up an hour early to stop by the bakery we had seen round the corner when we were arriving. And it was WORTH IT! Oo yummy yummy! (Plus, the baker lady was SO sweet, patient, and helpful, just lovely to see.) And I just wrote my ode to the lovely people of Germany. lol, you cant just add things to regular rice crispiest. thats cheating :p you've got to think of a basic food that could replace the rice. i think oats, like in a flapjack could work. And i also think beans would be a funny one to try.

I've done it! It wasn't super crispy since they're so thin they don't need much moisture to reduce the crunch, but it tasted great and wasn't mushy or anything. Ruffled potato chips worked better than regular ones, but I wonder if kettle chips would keep their texture more.

You can't add Hershey chocolate because they don't make chocolate. They make "chocolate flavoured candy". There isn't actually enough cacao content to legally count as chocolate here. Plus its produced in such a way that one of its key flavours is vomit. Not even making that up. The butyric acid from milk that has gone slightly sour is also found in vomit. That's decidedly not a treat at all. Not sure how Americans can stomach eating it, its vile.

I'd like to see this done with less wet rice! There's this dry cooked rice thing called "锅巴" from China, and I feel like using that might get you pretty close to an actual rice krispy. (Although I believe dried out rice from the bottom of the pot might be a lot crunchier than actual rice krispies)

When the day old rice was reheated in the marshmallows, it released some of the water it had inside. This is why it works good for fried rice because that release helps it be dryer and not turn to mush.

You could try cooking the rice, letting it mostly dry; a little more than you might for making a batch of fried rice, or if you have a dehydrator dehydrat it for a while, then deep fry the rice and you should get some thing crispy and puffed. And then use that to make rice rice crispy treats.
@AmateurUrbanFarm
@AmateurUrbanFarm 2 года назад
Yeah, this would just be home made rice krispie treats. They could do this with the ramen, too. Anything that is cooked in water, dehydrated (mostly) and then fried will puff. The water content left in the mostly dried thing is what causes it to expand (or puff)..
@ge2719
@ge2719 2 года назад
@@AmateurUrbanFarm i'd imagine the rice would go back to be pretty much as hard as they are raw, and be inedible. maybe just pan fried for a while,
@AmateurUrbanFarm
@AmateurUrbanFarm 2 года назад
@@ge2719 definitely - after cooking rice and then mostly dehydrating it the texture is pretty close to raw rice, but the frying puffs it out and makes it edible (speaking from experience) Edit: stopping the dehydrating process at the right time (before all of the moisture is gone) is key in this process.

The freshly cooked rice solidified better and had less moisture because the starch in the rice was fresh and actually activated better when first cooked to combine with the rest of the ingredients (as in it worked super well as an adhesive when its been freshly cooked as opposed to the reheated or day old rice).
