I saw most of that great innings at the WACA. It seemed to me the more Lillee got angry and frustrated the harder Fredericks smashed him. Being a Pom it was great !!

This was one of great test innings by Roy Fredricks ..and so was one of Derreck Rendall against Australia in Australia

This was the first test match I ever attended and I was forever hooked. If Roy Fredericks wasn’t enough, Clive Lloyd also made one of the most sublime tons you’d ever hope to see and Chappelli also made a nice ton and a half. But for mine the other great joy was Andy Roberts skittling Australia with 7 for in the second dig. How they lost every other match I’ve never figured out

"The train was late by six months" which was written by late sir nevil cardus in one of the sports magazine which i remembered to have read in 1975. He expected this innings to have come in 1975 world cup finals.

I am a great fan of Ian Chapell's commenting skills. I am an avid follower of cricket. Over a period of all these years, I heard commentary initially over radio and on TV. Every one has one's own style of commenting. While most of them are just o.k , Ian Chapel is just outstanding. He has the knack of engaging the attention of the listener and makes it very interesting.

Fredericks took on Lillee and Thompson when they were at the height of their bowling - he chewed them up and spat them out. Was one of the great attacking innings.

@MlilwanaOsanku
@MlilwanaOsanku Год назад
@@CaptainAmerica-xl7gp It is clear Gary Sobers influenced Roy Fredericks. Perhaps, Leslie Amsterdam, and Charles Paul, an uncle of Roy Fredericks, influenced Roy Fredericks. Certainly, Clyde Walcott had profound influence upon Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Clive Lloyd, Roy Fredericks and Alvin Kallicharran and numerous unheard and unsung Guyanese batsmen of the 1950s and 1960s. Clyde Walcott, favored stroke play off the back foot with immense power. And most definitely Clive Lloyd seems to be a left handed batting Clyde Walcott. Roy Fredericks was Mimi left handed batting Clyde Walcott. I have not favored the helmeted era. I refused to compare people more suited to be Knights of the Round Table than entertainers with those of 1900-1977. I consider Roy Fredericks, the last of three great West Indies test match openers. Clifford Roach and Conrad Hunte are the two preceding Roy Fredericks. During the West Indies tour of Australia 1975 and 1976, Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, Gary Gilmour and Max Walker completely intimidated, and humiliated Gordon Greenidge. After four completed innings those of the first and third test matches Gordon Greenidge managed a grand total of eleven runs. Thus eleven in four innings is the albatross around Gordon Greenidge’s career. I am of the opinion scoring centuries against Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, Gary Gilmour and Max Walker 1975-1976 in test matches in Australia is the yardstick of outstanding batsmen. Fredericks, Kallicharran, Lloyd, Rowe, and Richards were successful. Gordon Greenidge was an abysmal failure. Lloyd hid Gordon Greenidge for eight consecutive test matches. In summer 1976, after the first two test matches, in most familiar environment and less formidable bowlers, I began wondering whether Lloyd’s judgment is rational. Gordon Greenidge seemed to be a lost cause continuum. And I guess much to the relief of Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge finally stomped his authority. Gordon Greenidge recorded a century in each innings in the third test, He didn’t stop there. Roy Fredericks and Gordon Greenidge enjoyed a blistering opening stand of 192 runs. Following the century and dismissal of Roy Fredericks; Gordon Greenidge completed his third consecutive test century. Finally, Gordon Greenidge began fulfilling the promise he showed in his debut test match where he scored 93 and 107 against India in India. Viv Richards’s performance in his first test match was awful.

Enjoyed this Chappell series a helluva lot bringing some truly great innings thru great narration. Couldn’t help notice that Ian himself scored a big hundred in this same game that Roy sparkled. He’s quite the batter himself to be scoring that against Roberts, Holding and co!

Roy fredricks 169 vs lilee and Thompson in their prime , on the fastest wicket in the world, to me it has got to be the greatest test innings ever played. I was a cricket loving 10yo and I'd been at the Gabba for the first test (and for the first Ashes test the previous year) and believed Lillee and Thompson were unplayable. I still remember watching this innings on B+W TV, completely astonished: Ian Chappell is right: Roy Fredericks that day was in a class all his own . It's still the greatest batting performance I've ever seen. If I remember correctly, all-rounder Bernard Julien opened the batting with RF; Roy set the tone by hitting Lillee for 6 off the 2nd ball of the innings.
@MlilwanaOsanku
@MlilwanaOsanku Год назад
It was said none no one wanted to open with Fredericks against Lillee and Thomson. It was not until Lance Gibbs volunteered to accompany Fredericks; Bernard Julien made his way most reluctantly to the crease. The saddest fact about the innings is Deryck Murray is the only West Indian eyewitness who expressed his views on the performance. The accounts given by Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Ashley Mallett, and Kim Hughes suffice, It is understandable Lillee and Thomson refuse to praise the innings. I must admit I consider innings - centuries - against Lillee 1971-1974 and Lillee and Thomson 1974-1976 in Australia as the highest standard of batsmanship. However, centuries against Lillee and Thomson 1974-1976 at WACA are far more outstanding than hundreds elsewhere. Similarly I rate centuries against Roberts, Holding, Croft and Garner anywhere as great as those against Lillee and Thomson 1974-1976. One can also understand Gordon Greenidge; his pride is still shattered by the intimidation, he felt from Lillee and Thomson in Australia.

The first day I ever had at a test match was Saturday at the WACA 1975. Test cricket has never lived up to it since! Mind you the earlier match between WA and Windies was astonishing with Roy, Viv and Clive all scoring very fast tons - sheer bliss. i was only 7 &1/2 years of age when this happened and even i heard and knew about this colossal innings back then in melbourne.my dad had it on the telly and he was like 'take a look at this son'...the other 2 -3 things that i recall the adults talking about most of that series was Greg Chappells prominence to best batsman in the world,he destroyed the windies that summer,Gary Cosier made his debut,Viv Richards potential and a young Gordon Greenidge failing miserably on his first tour of Australia getting dismissed for next to nothing each innings,of course it all turned around for the windies only 6 months later in England and as Ian said the signs were there in this '75-'76 series
