PC Server and Parts sent over a used server for an upcoming project. We discussed some of the spec over the phone and via email but only general guidelines were set. They did not tell me exactly what model they would be sending over. Today we are going to see what they sent us and run it through some benchmarks.

6:38 is my favorite part ;) The box was actually 3'2" x 2'2" if anyone cares (someone in the comments asked). And yes.... I put the case cover back on during testing.

The rackmount server I got is a 2U, its huge, its heavy, and best of all totally pointless, so I bought it for $160 LOL. I got it setup turned it on and it worked fine, next day I went to turn it on and it was dead. Turned out there was a slightly dead power supply, luckily the power supplies are pretty readily available and cheap, so $30 for a replacement power supply and it was up and running again, and yes its loud, they're servers, the fans scream to keep them cool, most of the time they're installed in a rack in a server room where nobody hears them anyhow LOL. Turns out after contacting the person I bought it from to troubleshoot the system, it came out of a hospital. The odd thing was I found a PCI video card in it, which was one reason I contacted the seller, why on earth would a server need a dedicated graphics card. Luckily the seller was also the same person who did pulled the server out of its rack at the hospital, so he was extremely helpful and said it came out of the section of the hospital that did CT scans, and X-Rays and it ran all the X-Ray equipment so that explained the additional graphics card. Apparently when new that dang server cost $14,000....yikes. So glad I got it for a mere $160 LOL.

server fans will always run at a higher RPM when the lid is off

Why?

John Orm they have a specific airflow channel and the fans will soon faster to compensate for the lack of that airflow.

It's more fun when the room gets warm and you start pushing it. You should see the extra drive rack cooler fans.

Nice machine you got there. I had a chance to get a bunch of 1u servers in the past but I left them due to their noise level compared to 2u and 4u. Got a bunch of 2u and a single 4u instead. The fan you got for the PSU area just needs oil, you can probably dismantle it and lube the bearings. You should have all fans in there running normally, if you take one out of the front the hardware or software may complain about it and not function as intended. These machines need quite a bit of airflow to stay cool. Not to mention the fact the fans on the front are hot-pluggable and use a special connector, so they only fit where they are actually intended to go. So if you had to replace the fan in the PSU area, you'd need the exact same part number.

Huh, thanks for the info. I did not know that. I am sure I could probably find the same part on ebay for dirt cheap (hopefully ;) )
@liblevi45s53
@liblevi45s53 5 лет назад
@@AAComputersandTechnology Yes, servers are not the same as consumer PCs. The manufacturers produce specific components for each specific model(s). HP for example will sometimes use the same part across certain generations(such as the 2.5" Drive Caddies), but the rest are entirely unique such as the fan mounting mechanism(including the connector) and etc. You can find the parts all over the place, but you need to ensure the part you pick is compatible with the model that you have.. or you're gonna have a bad time.

I have customers that use very similar HPs or Dells with those Delta Fans. A lot of times, they are used as nothing more than smart NAS boxes with sometimes 500G or 1TB HDDs in several bays. I have seen some of these style servers in small rooms. My ears start to ring after rebooting these. I typically try not to go for rack mount servers if possible for my personal use. I want all my computers to be seen. Rack mount equipment is meant to be hidden in a closet, so temperature is under control but you sacrifice noise... That said, if I find a cheap good looking clear rack and a cheap good rack server (at the same time), and maybe an Ethernet over home power lines kit (most likely needed since my new house won't have Ethernet), I'd jump on all 3 after I move.

SAS drives are always 10K or 15K rpm. Let me know if you ever need server parts.. or racks. I probably have 500 of those hard drive caddies in stock. I have 100's - I'm in the ewaste business. We have warehouses in Minnesota, British Columbia and Ontario.

Thanks for the video! What I wanted to mention is that I can yotally understand why youtube requires manual turning on of the notifications - for example, I’ve subscribed to 50+ different tech channels, and I would go nuts, if all of them would trigger a notification. Instead of that I just come home from office, make a nice big cup of tea, sit down, open up my feed at RU-vid, and scroll down through all the new videos from my subscription list and watch what I want. I actually appreciate that notifications are off by default, to be honest, nothing to complain about!

I started cheap with a 1435. It is very loud. Now I have identical generation 11 dell 1u machines. One backs up the other. It is slightly newer so parts aren't dirt cheap. On the other hand this generation is green star and very quiet. Seriously I am dealing with no more power consumption than a television and no more noise than a desk fan. Of course for barebones, shipping, cpu, ddr3 etc you are spending more than $150!

Replace that PSU Fan and don't touch the others. You need them in place. For Windows 10 to work, you will need the drivers and search for them on the setup and then, you can see the drives. I recommend you to use the HP controller so you can use all the drives and do two raids. I have the drives if you want them.

Not everything needs game benchmarks.....This is a server. It is not intended or designed to play games. It's like taking a Honda civic off-roading in the mud, sometimes it is unnecessary to test something when it is obvious it is not going to work well. Also, i am sorry for your ears. Haha!

phoronix test suite. And the reason you have to click on the bell to activate notifications is simple. Just because you subscribe to a channel doesn't mean you want notifications every time it uploads a new video. Many of us check out subscription feeds to see what new videos have been uploaded. Unless a channel I'm subscribed to does a fair amount of live streams I don't need to be notified of each video they post. Plus I may not be interested in every video they upload. I don't need a hundred notification emails every day.

How fast a CPU will it support? If it will support something faster, probably the best up grade possible besides add more RAM. As you didn't divulge the purpose, hard to recommend a form of Linux but I favor Puppy, Slack and Exton.
