Definitely agree about the zombie models. Unlike in later games, World At War zombies are only in the early stages of decomposition so they look far more human, which somehow makes them much creepier
It's probably because it helps the zombies tap into the uncanny valley even more. Looking mostly human, but there's still something off. In this case, their movements.
@@Chuked thats pretty true but i just get scared of the bo1 zombs because bo1 graphics with the lighting and how the zombies look so decayed its quite eerie but those swarm zombies design is scary
Nacht really had their own trash models/movements that made them so unique. I remember LOVING the “Der Reise” Machminima trailer, and they run the same way with flailing arms that almost give off the creepy feel.
I can absolutely attest to the confusion of experiencing this for the first time without knowing what it was. When this game came out, dial-up internet or having no internet at all was extremely common where I live. A lot of people strictly bought these games for the Campaign or to host LAN parties with friends over the weekend. A few friends and I discovered this during one such party while the rest of the house was goofing around in multiplayer. The look on our 16 year old faces while we frantically tried to gather everyone into the room to show them what we found was an experience you just can't get from gaming any more. Also a memory I hadn't thought about in a long while. Thanks for this
I’m 17 now, and I bought all the last gen cods and their DLCs because I really fell in love with Zombies, but I can honestly say that I’m incredibly jealous that there are people who discovered this mode the way you did. It certainly must’ve been more thrilling than finding out through RU-vid and playing Town Survival on Bo2 as your first zombies experience. Still I have no regret in picking up WAW to experience where it all started.
Totally agree. As much as I love the 4 unlikely allies from each major country in WW2, the nameless, faceless, voiceless (except for grunts) character you play as in Nacht sets the tone way better. Also another thing I like about the WW2 setting is the level of technology not being anywhere near modern, and everything looking and feeling dirty and slow. Everything is covered in grunge of some kind, even your guys arms. People didnt wear gloves or body armor and the guns didn't really have more complex modular systems for attachments. There were only a few, and they were rudimentary at best. The atmosphere is also very well done, the fog, dead trees, old vehicles, quick repairs done to the busted building, and war supplies just laying around, clearly untouched for a strange amount of time considering the war drives home the feeling of the swift abandonment. Also that there's no sign of where exactly you're located brings a great deal lonliness which only assists in the potency of the dread that might as well be eeking out of the concrete walls. I firmly believe WaW has the best zombies mode in terms of the horror aspect, *especially* in Nacht, but it's overall not as replayable as future installments due to the lack of polish and other features. I noticed that as the functionality, replayability, and smooth gameplay went up, the fear and horror vanished (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). Also as a kid seeing the zombies heads exploding after dying in solo made it seem like whoever's behind the strange disembodied laugh is also behind the zombies somehow, and just wanted to see me struggle and die before removing them himself 0_o
Totally agree. WaW completely nailed the horror aspect of zombies. I liked it better when they didn't make the storyline cartoonish, but zombies is still fun either way
It's true that the horror and polishing gameplay frequently end up at odds. I think black ops is an excellent balance but honestly each entry WaW-Bo3 illustrates this point in its own way. uncompromising dread is what you get here and it's easily the coolest way to punctuate a single player campaign FPS
i love nacht, you really do get a feeling of dread and alone (if playing singleplayer) knowing you can only hold off on the zombies for so long before you are windmilled to death
Definitely a perfect pilot for the series. The pure rawness of this map added so much more to the experience. This felt like actual real zombies, rather than what just felt like a side minigame within the more recent titles.
That death cutscene wit the camera slowly moving to the right wit the zombies heads popping gave me like a flash back of seeing it the first time wen I was a lil dude. I remember being so scared unlocking it the first time after beating the campaign I called my older brothers in to see it too cause they only played the multiplayer. Was such a cool extra feature
another thing is the map selection description of this map, which adds the extra feel of uncertainty and uneasiness when playing it. "You drove them deep into the heart of the reich. You thought they were dead. You were wrong."
I was 8 when I first played WAW, I'm now 21. I remember playing the last mission on campaign, and I unlocked Nazi Zombies. My dad was downstairs watching me, (RIP pops), and he was saying how rebuilding the windows was cheating. 😂 I'll always have a real special place in my heart for this game, as it turned me into who I am today!
I was 6 years old when waw was out. I remember beating the campaign and it revealed this cut scene. The absolute terror but joy that came from this can never be matched in any other video game again. Miss the good old days
Nacht in WaW is always going to be a staple of Zombies to me, I utterly adore it. Has a load of nostalgia from playing the map endlessly as a kid back on WaW, especially since I never did get any of the DLCs, that intro always terrified me to no end but I'll be damned if it wasn't the most fun random extra mode I've ever played.
Still, my favorite and I can't believe some people dislike the slow start... pfft. The slow start helps build the atmosphere and gives you time to prepare yourself for what's to come.
World at War zombies was the most immersive experience as a kid. The fact that I couldn’t boot up the game at 9pm by myself without getting spooked was something I will never forget. Before online gaming was a huge thing and your cousins were your biggest competition. Only having 2 controllers but 4 people so you’d compete between eachother for which team could go the highest rounds
after watching this video and reading people’s interpretations i want to leave some input of my own here. specifically relating to the loading screen from the Black Ops version of this map. there always was a sense of mystery surrounding the comics we see, and i think this perfectly compliments the atmosphere of Nacht Der Untoten overall. the song in the background fills us with dread and unsure expectations, truly feeling like horrors beyond comprehension have been unleashed and we’re being put in a situation we can’t prepare for. brilliant usage of the electric-guitar and very fitting for the first Zombies map in the series alongside my initial experience with this mode in the franchise. thanks for the video and a job well done on summing up all of our thoughts.
It's very interesting how so much of the atmosphere comes from limitation. No dialogue, the claustrophobic design, the basic models, the lack of anything to really help you out aside from the mystery box.
Also whats really interesting is the fact that there is an easter egg on this map but no one has found it even after all this time. I hope one day its found
2:15 That's the one thing all of my favorite maps have in common. Knowing that the character I'm playing as has no hope of rescue or escape really makes me feel tense.
Awesome video! World at war and SOME of black ops 1 & 2 in my opinion are the only games that truly show what zombies is all about. It’s truly creepy, it’s gritty, the maps (even the larger ones like kino) has the player feeling trapped, and your resources are limited and you actually have to fight and progress to get those resources. I truly miss the days when zombies was just about surviving for as long as possible! I legitimately believe that’s why we often get remasters of older maps. Because they are so dang good and better than anything that came after tranzit!
Agreed, there has been a change in tone after Black Ops 2. I assume that this is because they started putting more emphasis on the story, so they wanted to make sure players could survive long enough to see it by adding things like weapon kits and 3+ hit downs. Cold War went so far with it that I don’t even view it as a survival game. However, I don’t dislike newer Zombies, I just try to see it for what it’s meant to be
@@theGODZILLA150 same here, I don’t dislike newer zombies either, I love forsaken and outbreak on cold war, I just wish they would do what black ops 2 did and give us both new classic survival and new objective oriented style maps!
Gotta say ive only watched two of this guys videos but i really really enjoy his content and i can tell it comes from a place of heart and understanding. Will definetly keep this on my radar
I absolutely love videos like this. One thing that I liked about the video is how you explained the grim imagery and horror of the zombies. It's a shame how the storyline turned into a complete mess, but I still find it cool that all of that complicated nonsense and impossible granduer started with a humble little airfield, a few debris' and a funny look box that costs a little too much until round 5. Definitely subscribing for this type of stuff, I _love_ it.
When it first came out! I was low key scared to play by myself. But I loved it so I couldn’t stay away from it! Faced my fears and got better and better!
This shit shook me to my core the first time I saw it. I was 5!! 😭 But when I came back to zombies in Bo1 the day after release, I absolutely loved it.
man this video is so good. I love that you're giving us your honest opinion. I wanna hear and see what you think about a load of other maps. maybe you should do verruckt next? make it a series!
This video was so agreeable, I love nacht, I still replay Nacht, Shino and Kino sometimes because they were so cool experiences that ive shared with my older brother. Nacht and Shino were probaly the greatest maps of WaW and still has so much replayability with a dedicated fanbase. Cruppz pushed WaW high rounds to in insane limit (over 10,000) rounds on Shi no Numa and pushed Nacht to over 9000. Best zombies I love you so much WaW
Underrated as hell. Better than Verruckt, for me. Me and my sister (who never played a video game in her life) would go up and then down to the Help Room. Light offs, middle of the night. We made it to round 21 which was considered pretty high and we were obsessed. Good times.
Loved the environment in the map. When i was a kid I saw my cousins playing zombies, they told me to try it obviously dying in the first round. Had a nightmare after that day.
I only have WaW on PS3. So this was the only zombie Map I played with my brother via local coop. What I love about this map while its simple, its the details like certain angles in a room that make sure that you are never really safe from the zombie or that you never really have that perfect spot to hold everything of.
I was one of the people who happened upon zombies, you see, its different now, if you BUY World at war you will see the zombies mode at the end of the campaign and will be locked until you get there on your own. THIS WAS NOT LIKE THIS IN THE OG. In the original, you did not see the zombies epilogue mission until the campaign itself was completed, this made it so anyone who stuck around after the credits got a nice surprise. As one of these people, i have to say, it is probably one of the most nostalgic moments in gaming i ever had. You know immediately whats going on with the bodies, if you had played cod 1-3 like me, you're also in disbelief that a game like call of duty would ever cross into the fantasy horror genre of zombies, like what? but believe it or not, i had to get ready and fight some zombies to the death. And i remember being so impressed, i never played anything like it before.
I remember watching that cutscene when I was 8. I freaked out. When I loaded in Nacht my heart was beating so damn hard. When the first zombie breached and killed me I immediately hit ALT-F4
this is a great video, i specifically remember the feeling i got from playing waw zombies, it was totally different from the rest it was dark and depressing, when i first played nacht at a young age i would keep my back to the corner and when i reached round 6 or 7 (which rarely happened) i would just quit the game because the way the zombies sprinted scared me so much along with the sounds they started to make, just that floppy crazy run, its just so creepy to me even today.
Great video man! You made a lot of points I never really thought about, especially the weapon selection for the box. Here before your channel blows up. Best of luck
When I first saw the opening cutscene I cried and yelled for my dad to turn off the xbox. That was actually horribly scary for the 5 year old me that saw that
Definately agree with everything that was said here. I think that Verruckt nailed this just as well as nacht did, verruckt was completely terrifying during the WaW days. However, nothing will ever top beating campaign for the very first time and seeing the nacht cutscene
Dude I loved this video, I agree with everything, and one more reason nacht was amazing: the simplicity - you don't have to worry about some dumbass easter egg or quest that takes long, obtaining parts to build whatever, or killing some stupid tentacle monster because now the story is gods and tentacle monsters, which is absurd. Nacht is just you and zombies in a bunker, a simple gameplay and you can easily understand the ''story'' it's just some soldiers that were infected after the war, to me all these things that people say are ''barebones'' are exactly why this is one my favorite maps.
fantastic points you made. For me this is the ONLY map (waw version) in cod history that delivers what a survival zombie experience would feel like irl
This is one of my favourite zombies maps!! Probably my favorite zombies map ever!! Small and simple but easy to camp (providing no one clears the debris upstairs!! 😠😠), and very eerie and creepy.... Zombies sound better too....plus happy days when the Death Machine spawned!! 💯😎😍👍💪👌
I was around 6 or 7 when I played this completing the campaign with my brother who was 8 or 9 i saw the cutscene and I immediately ran up stairs to get my dad cuz I was scared lol my brother and my dad played it while I was across the room asking them if was really scary or not. Coming from halo ce and 2 and the really early cods this was nothing that I was expecting but really shaped my early to later years playing coop with the boiz and waiting for the next zombies experience from treyarch. I was def sad that the recent zombies from the past few years didn’t retain or exceed waw, bo1, 2, 3. I played those games religiously
When I was younger and played this map i tought the reason there were zombies in the first place it’s because of that fog that turned them like a sorta of air born virus but that was just me when I was young
Super late to the party but I love the silent zombies protagonists in horror themed survival maps, zombies became less scary with bo3 and I feel like it lost a lot of what made it “survival horror” like. The WAW weapons also felt the best out of all games tbh.
Thanks my guy. It still feels so weird when people compliment my voice/audio quality, I’ve never thought it was that good, but maybe I’m just overly critical of myself
I remember when I got home from school and my brother said he finished the campaign and said there was a cool ending and this shit happened at night time bro I was scared asf
What zombies map do you think is the best? I'd normally say Origins but your videos are making me appreciate the more dynamic survival elements that the earlier games had.
That’s a question I’ve always struggled with because each map has something different to offer. Some are more story based, some have great atmosphere, and some are best for their gameplay. Nacht der Untoten is certainly one of my favorites, but Moon, BotD, DE, and Kino are up there too.
Fun fact The original head developers did not support Nazi zombies and it was a rag tag team that launch zombies into the stratosphere in the gaming community
dude waw zombie is perfect cause in later zombies games like zombies 2-3-4 and so on the story line gets confusing like just say that some virus spreaded and now peeps r turning into zombies, in later zombies games there is so much going on in the game, the storyline is mega confuseing ngl
I like the zombie models in nacht and verrukt, they are freshly turned humans... By the time of der riese, they are starting to rot, gray skin flesh peeling off By kino they are really just skeletons with little flesh hanging from their corpses
I've been saying for years they could have done a Nazi Zombie game including all the maps. Start off with Nacht Der Undertoten and your points are allocated into your 'bank', which then can be used to buy new maps, weapons, powerups. Add in a 'create a map' Too and other players could share online and there would be countless hours of play, especially with tens of dozens of players in a single map.
