Hello new visitors, where are you all coming from all of a sudden? Anyway, for those who will argue that this doesn't fit: yes and no. Broadly, it's the same in that we dramatically reintroduce the time war storyline by revealing the 9th Doctor as we've never seen him before, on the last day of the time war. It's the part of his life that's still a mystery to us, vilified even by 9 himself. With a few line changes, I think a scene like this could still work, criticising the man that the Doctor - specifically, Eccleston's Doctor - had to become on that day when he seemingly destroyed his own people. But I don't have the luxury of changing 11's lines so this is the video you've got. :P
I imagine this showing up in people's RU-vid recommendations may have something to do with the fact that my favorite Doctor is returning to the series via Big Finish audio stories :D I can't wait to hear Eccleston's voice again as The Ninth Doctor. WHY MUST I WAIT UNTIL MAY?!
A version of this with Paul McGann's Doctor would have been powerful, too. For years I think the assumption was that ending the Last Great Time War was either the 8th Doctor's last act or the 9th Doctor's first one (at least the TV Tropes page of Doctor Who agreed). So either of them in that moment would have worked.
@@TheAltarOfKez Before the reveal of the War Doctor I had always assumed that the 8th Doctor was the one that did it but in doing so it meant sacrificing his body (and perhaps his life) to end the war.
I loved the Ninth Doctor (as you can see) though I think this version would have been a lot darker than what we saw from Chris in Series 1. It would have been incredible to see him play it that way ...
@@RantingBrummie Yeah.. I know.. but it was his decision and after all.. he is still so much darker incarnation of the Doctor.. maybe even more than War Doctor...
@@robpollock9720 It was definitely Moff's inner fanboy making him think that. The whole thing is basically "The Doctor would never do that (ignoring moments where the Doctor has done similar) so only someone NOT the Doctor would so let's fix it"
If Eccleston had said yes, none of this would have happened. You can't frame a story around a lost, secret Doctor if that lost secret Doctor was neither lost or a secret.
@@Symon2099In said alternative universe they’d likely not included the hidden incarnation thing and made him the incarnation 11 was ashamed of. Though there’d have been such fantrums “B b b but what about the mirror scene!?!?!?!? That proved #9 was newly regenerated and couldn’t possibly have been the iteration who fought in the time war!!!!!! MOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😅 With that out of their system they’d likely have come up with some fan theories to explain it away. Like say #9 had a haircut recently and was attacked by the autons at the unseen start of that adventure so didn’t get to check it out before visiting Rose’s flat. Or the time war happened in between him leaving without Rose and then coming back for her.
Holy shit, this is your most seamless work yet. You've made it look like it actually happened. Like you just simply pulled this clip from an alternate timeline of our universe where Eccleston agreed to return.
But in any of those alternate timelines, the ending of NotD would be quite different. He's a known Doctor. The Doctor admits to being him. He called himself "The Doctor" while he was him. He wouldn't talk to Clara about his "hidden incarnation" if it was Chris.
Potentially the best Doctor Who edit I've seen. Not trying to insult the wonderful John Hurt or his contribution to Who, but Eccleston in my opinion should've been the one for this. It's a shame he never came back.
no. 8 should have been. even from the offset it always seems 9 wasn't the doctor who fought in the war. he was always the one after. so if any doctor who wasn't hurt should be there. it;s mcgann
[abandoned account] no, the 9th Doctor isn’t supposed to be the one that was fought in the time war, he was the aftermath. The war doctor was supposed to be the incarnation that his other incarnations could barley stand to look at which isn’t the same as the ninth doctor.
@@mrbluesky4838, Moffat originally wanted Eccleston, not John Hurt. Obviously when you're forced to introduce a new character (the War Doctor), you have to take artistic liberties to make the plot make sense, hence him being the incarnation that none of the latter ones care for. If Eccleston had returned, I guess this wouldn't have been the case.
Jivan Pal I know Moffat wanted Eccleston to return but honestly I’m glad it didn’t happen. What I mean is, it would have been amazing to see 9 return as he’s easily one of my favourites but him being the doctor that his other incarnations can barley even look at and treat him like he’s a mistake would have been a bad reintroduction, and the point of 9 is that he was the post war doctor.
I think it's a shame they couldn't at least have persuaded him to do the regeneration- seeing that moment where he suddenly forgets that he saved Gallifrey
@@souvlaki9951 He left the show and got pissed off at the BBC because he was outraged at the bullying going on behind the scenes and the lack of action towards it.
Just imagine if the war doctor wasn't John Hurt but Christopher Eccleston. After the 8th doctor regenerated, the 9th doctor fought in the war and what we saw in season 1 was him starting anew in that body. That would explain the long silence. This would have been a fantastic twist. But I still adored the idea of a shamed, hidden incarnation.
Fantastic - the Christopher Eccleston impression was spot-on and left me wondering when he ever voiced that line (until I read the description). It would have really tied things together well if Nine came back for the 50th, but I get that they did the best with what they had, and John Hurt gave an incredible performance.
Eccleston was brilliant, that scene where he sees the Dalek and he flies from fear to hysterical laughter, to tormenting it and having no feelings of mercy towards it, he made it real.
I hope Eccleston does one day make a return even if it's just for a cameo, it would be fantastic to see him. Aw well, maybe for the sixtieth anniversary.
He has returned to the franchise with the big finish audio adventures, but unfortunately said in an interview that he doesn't want to return to the actual show
@@chessoc7799 he left because of the bullying going on at the BBC and nothing was being done about it. He is also back at the BBC because he’s doing a show called the A word.
@@papalazarou1353 They also went behind his back and released a statement saying the role was too physically tiring so that blacklisted him, and he couldn't get any parts after it so went to the US for a while.
I have this scene in my head when the war doctor regenerate to the 9th.. How i imagined how powerful the moment would be where he stood alone and for a spilt second wearing a warm smile as he is feeling happy that he saved his planet from the war and then, all of sudden, you see his face changing to shock then disbelieve as his memories began to fade.. One by one like a water spilling through his fingers and all he can think of is how everyone is now died because of him.. He would rush outside the tardis and into an unknown place, a save place.. Save from the war and fire but no longer save from the demons that hunt his mind and memories .. His theme song will play in the background as he falls down on his knees then on the ground.. Hugging his shaking body with shaky hands.. then he would cry in a loud voice.. And Through the silence you will hear him whispering how sorry he was for letting everyone down.. 💔
Oh, if only this had come to pass. I also would have gladly accepted Paul McGann, since he was also a Doctor who got far too little exposure, and unlike Eccleston, he actually WANTED to be in the special.
Love your logic, much as i liked John Hurt as an actor. the War Doctor should've only been either; Paul McGann or Christopher Eccleston. But yes much agreed it should've been McGann moreso i reckon! Fandom at large would've still been excited to have him return in the role back as the Doctor in some capacity!
Dude, I would’ve loved to have Christopher return in the 50th anniversary! The war doctor, John hurt, was amazing, but imagine how things could’ve been!
Imagine the McGann intro video as a part of the 50th, he regenerates into 9 who makes a surprise return, and then the title sequence before it proceeds as normal but with 9 instead of John Hurt. If Eccleston appeared on screen when only 10 and 11 were advertised i woulda lost my shit
Not gonna lie, this would've kinda made sense as many people probably started with 'Rose' as their enterance into Doctor Who. So to start off the celebration of Doctor Who with Chris' return...It would've been kinda fitting.
I always thought 9 was a Post-War Doctor, so I'm happy with what we got. But I would love to see 9 in a multi-Doctor story. I would really love to see Ecclestone and Tennant together bouncing off one another.
When did Eccleston voice this? Was it at a convention or something? Edit: Nevernmind, read description. Wow that is a really good impression. I couldn't even tell it wasn't the genuine article.
Honestly, this would have worked so well. I always assumed it was Nine that participated in the Time War since we didn't see a proper 8 to 9 regen. or it was 8 and 9, with PTSD, was the result of that regeneration. to use a paraphrase we all know and love, this was fantastic. absolutely fantastic.
Eccleston is my favourite doctor Don't get me wrong Tennant is a legend and Smith is awesome ... but just the dialogue with the living plastic in the first episode he appears in ..... It's genius Also the war doctor is awesome but we didn't get to see him on screen for long
Even though I fully respect Christopher Eccleston's choice not to return, I can't help thinking about what might have been. No shade to the late and great John Hurt, of course. But seeing Nine on screen again would have been magical to me. That impression of him is bang-on as well. I think The Day of the Doctor could have worked with Eight as well tbh, but I guess they didn't want to go in that direction. Having listened to quite a bit of Paul McGann's Big Finish stories, I think it could have been really tragic for this suave and charming and witty Doctor to eventually be driven to make such a terrible choice.
I thought for sure that this was a recent video, made thanks to the recent explosion of AI voice synthesis. The fact it was made using a good old voice impression is actually refreshing and impressive!
This is impeccably well done. Good work. I do very much love John Hurts Doctor, but I do think McGann would have been rad as hell to have, as well as Eccleston.
This would have been SO COOL to see. Don't get me wrong, John Hurt was EXCELLENT as the War Doctor, but come on Eccleston was, for many of us, our 'first' Doctor, so seeing him again would have been really cool! Great vid! :=)
damn that was good. I do love John Hurt but DAMN Eccelston would have been the better choice because it seems the most likely scenario and was the original plan. whoever did this made 9 look good!!!
I always wish that they went with what RTD outlined. That 8 actually fought the war. It's what the Big Finish run was gearing up to and then Moffat was like "LOL JK, There was an imaginary Doctor. Tee hee."
It never would have made sense to feature the Ninth Doctor on the last day of the Time War. He had just regenerated in Rose -- he hadn't even seen his own ears yet until then!
Is that really the case? cos when Rose is investigating him and visits that conspiracy nutter, he's got pictures of Eccleston dotted through history, clearly he'd regenerated a while ago, no?
I didn't know how much I needed this until I saw it. Dear God, man, how did you find the audio that fits so perfectly well?! Awesome job mate. I agree with one of the comments, could you give Master-Missy a try?
The greatest respect to the late Sir John Hurt, but this is what should have happened for the 50th anniversary. This is what Steven Moffatt wanted deep down.
Excellent job on the edit and voice work! Personally I thought John Hurt's War Doctor was a bit of a flop, should've been McGann's role. Matt Smith's line delivery here tho' is epic.
If it was eight, it would make way more sense because that would explain why we got barely any stories with eight. It’s something the doctor wants to hide while still calling in the eighth doctor making it not confusing. Although then the finale of season seven would make no sense, so they have to change that around and put something like that during Capaldi’s regeneration episode
Yeah 100%. 8 being the War Doctor would've fit the format/narrative of the show as he only had 1 episode and has been largely hidden and forgotten. And as for the regeneration cycle, Capaldi being the last incarnation of the first cycle would've been interesting considering his final story with the first doctor and he basically wanted to die at the end. As 12 lay on the floor of the tardis making his last breath happy with his positive influence and help to the universe, he could've started to regenerate. Maybe some unknown force/figure could've granted him a new cycle while he was down. I don't know what though. Maybe the pilot water girl thing could've been some eternal, godly being who granted 12 more regenerations?
Great edit, and kudos to Pete Walsh: I really thought for a moment that Chris Eccleston had said this line! If this had played out this way in the actual series, the scenes between the Doctor and the Moment on Gallifrey would have carried so much more weight, and given a point as to why the Moment took Rose's form as part of the Ninth Doctor's redemption. The idea of the Ninth Doctor knowing he was going to lose his memory and carry on believing that he was the destroyer of the Time Lords would have been genuinely tragic. This was a sadly missed opportunity. Christopher Eccleston really doesn't get enough credit for being the Doctor after such a long hiatus and breathing new life into the series.
I would have liked it as McGann for the sole reason that so many people don't count him as the doctor because he only appeared in the movie so it would be a very good lampshade saying he doesn't acknowledge that one.
That is well done. It was very disappointing Christopher Eccleston declined to return for the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor. At the time, he was busy playing Malekith in Thor: The Dark World.
The "What-if" scenario of Eccleston returning will always be fascinating, but I gotta admit I think I do prefer the way things ended up going. A secret Doctor that did the unthinkable is far more interesting to me. And it gave us John Hurt too! Also, at the cost of annoying everyone here, I do agree with Moffat that I can't see Eight or Nine being the one that finished the War. In an ideal world we'd have had a quick string of episodes showcasing Eight slowly and begrudgingly admitting that he does indeed need to take part in the War, and a quick one-off showing Nine mourning immediately after he regenerated.
Since this episode came out i've been saying it should have been Paul Mcgann as the War Doctor. It would mirror the years fans were divided if Mcgann was really the 8th Doctor or not.
I don't personally think Christopher Eccleston will return for the 60th anniversary, but that will satisfy a lot of people if he did, even for a 3 second cameo, 3 seconds of new footage would even be enough I'd say, the lack of his doctor is uncanny.
Can someone explain to how Eccleston could have been the War Doctor if he had come back for the 50th anniversary? The impression I got from Eccleston's first episode was that he'd pretty much just regenerated, since he was examining himself in the mirror at Rose's house.
Really he should've done all that stuff the doctor believed to have done but since he didnt come back the War Doctor was like a substitute so if they were able to use the 9th Doctor they wouldn't have needed John hurt
In the comics, he smashed every window in the TARDIS in the Time War so he didn't have to look at himself. In Rose he was probably taking the first good look at himself in a hundred years.
Yeah but when Rose was looking for him in the first episode, she went to that conspiracy theorist and he showed her pictures of 9th in different points in the past.
I love this a lot, but the credits at the end wasn't necessary -- just Christopher Eccleston's face alone gives us everything we need for that mic to drop.
Could imagine the dialog changing if we had him back. Instead of saying he didn't deserve the title of the doctor, Eleventh holds Clara back to her surprise and explains that this would be a moment where he stopped being the doctor
This would've been amazing, and would've closed a sort of gap in the 50th. We've got the 13th regwneration (Smith), 11/12th, (Tennant) and the 9th. Skipping 10th, the doctor that brought the show back to us.
This is really cool, at the time the 50th anniversary was made, the implied canyon was the 8th Doctor fought in the timewar, with the 9th having relatively recently regenerated in episode 1 "Rose". Which... doesn't make a whole lot of sense since I that same episode we see him in that one guy's photo collection, but later the 9th looks in the mirror and is like, "huh not bad, but look at the ears" in the mirror. Idk man. I hope we get a proper 60th anniversary with as many doctors as possible
