I’m tempted to play again with my smaller tanks. But my small tanks are busy with my mini-mycology projects. I have no secrets to share but a food I use is Bacter AE by Glas Garten which they state add important microorganisms, amino acids and enzymes. Which improves water quality and aid to create bio film. My shrimp population exploded after using it. I don’t use it a lot because it does create a good amount of biofilm, 😂 which I learned early on.

Maybe you should move your shrimp empire to Australia. Shrimp prives are still crazy high here, even for a basic af red cherry from some unkown line can be $7.95. Once you start looking at cobalts or even red rillis the prices skyrocket

Hey I really liked your video! I’m surprised your shrimp do so well with the brightwell substrate, as I thought it would have lowered the water hardness. I’ve had my neocardinia shrimp in water with a KH 2 and GH of 5 and they didn’t do well, even with using shrimp envy mineral. Although I’ve found that where you get your shrimp make a world of difference. I’m starting up another colony in a 20 gallon with RODI water, I may have to set up a 5 gallon similar to this setup! I also have to check out those fish! As I’ve never been comfortable putting schooling fish in anything so small but they look like they may be able to thrive in it long term!

Yeah it's a bit of a balancing act but I started prepping tanks this way plus crushed coral more or less, when I was keeping tang Tigers and crystals with neos to see If I could keep all 3 lines in one 10g :) And yes, the sourcing and the shrimp lines makes the difference. Aquatic arts has great colors... garden of Eder shrimps has the most lines of any one person....outside Asia? 350+ and his neos have not been so well culled for color lately ( they're still good genes over all though). But for consistency on any neos...the in store bred shrimp from Indianapolis ( aquaticarts.com ) are the way I will always go. They have spent 10 to 15 years working on some of their neo and babaulti caridina lines. But if you wanna see a ton of types of shrimp, video toured the garden of Eder shrimp house...it's insanity lol

I’ve had different types of shrimp & the fricking things just die every time you fart or cough but I have no problems keeping any other fish or critters & I’m a hobby chemist, biologist, & geologist, so I know what I’m doing. I love the shrimp and I can keep them regarding income. It’s just too much stress because they just die way too easy & are just so freaking sensitive. Yes, of course I have the soil substrate with a nice Lexan caravan tons of plants and wood and on and on supporting closed ecosystems & I do not use chemicals such as medications.

Gets better after the tank has been set up for like a year+ Also the small tanks one mistake spells disaster, did a water change on my 2.5, and removed all the frogbit so my Lilly could grow, crashed my entire colony Left a small piece of broccoli in my other 2.5 for a day longer than I meant, rocked my other colony Largely tho if you use something like Bacteria ae and getting them fed, their numbers start to rocket pretty quick and outpace deaths

@valleymykel-mq7gw
@valleymykel-mq7gw 4 месяца назад
Shrimps generally die new when sold from mass breeders or most big box stores. It's super rare that you find a supplier that has done their due diligence to prevent them from being super stressed during travel to where non of them die. Neocaradinas are extremely easy once you understand that keeping "perfect" parameters means virtually nothing when keeping these guys. You are attempting to get a colony started, not attempting to keep the same shrimp you got from the store, or imported to you. All it takes is a tank that you know is established and just keep trying a batch of 5 to 10 until you see babies and that's when the colony really starts. I have had groups that all survived after the acclimation, and I have had groups that all died during the acclimation. There's nothing you can do to prevent stuff like that from happening other than reporting the DOA and trying again.

I'm in Denmark - so maybe not applicable, but I have been selling RCS from a 30 litre tank (not high grade) and I don't find much demand for them. About 0.6 dollar. I got another 30 litre tank with Blue Dream, that are ready for sale. I expect a bit over 1 dollar for them, and I'm curios about the demand for them 😁. Your yellow ones a little over 2 dollars.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 месяца назад
So here you can get very low grade yellows for 2 to 4 dollars but nice yellows or blue dreams are 6 to 10 bucks at a store still. I think in Europe you'd need to be breeding caridina and or sulawesi species... and selling them to the pet keepers and not wholesale to stores... for me, I know enough local fishkeepers that if I change 6 each and 5 for 25, I can sell 300 or 400 a year or so

So I keep everything 6.5-7 ph tds 120 or so and kh 5 or 6 gh 7 or 8. Temp 75- 78 or so in the room and it works well with chili's, most rasboras actually ( the sundadanio axelrodi). Cpds and ruby tetras can work too.

Thanks Alex! Great info. I need to start rehoming some red cherries. I’ve moved them into every tank I have (8 now) originally from my 55. Started with 12 initially and they’ve exploded into hundreds in just under 8 mos time. Time to get $$ or lfs credit! A few weeks ago I started a tank with only blonde orange eye blue tiger shrimp from LRB. Trying my hand at these as a step up from neos. Hope they take off too. I do finagle their water parameters. My well water is crazy hard as well as high ph/kh/gh/tds. Currently using rainwater/well water ratio. Any advice other than @170 tds? More/less water changes, etc? Current cond: 10 gal, unheated(@72 deg), sponge filter, rock pile, guppy grass, pearlweed, Ramshorn snails, feeding bacter ae, hikari crab cuisine , algae wafers. Wish me luck! Hi Alex I have just started an asellus aquaticus (aquatic isopods) culture. Have you had any experience with them? I purchased them from Philip’s fish works (I’m in California ), I have looked into buying them but they seem regionally locked to the UK in terms of importing. Do you know if they are illegal/ invasive? I’ve tried to look into it but am coming up with nothing. If nothing else I think you would enjoy them, they do well with neocaridina permitters and like a rubble style tank with leaf litter and hardwood. Best wishes you to and the fam.

For a comparison in central Europe: Decent quality shrimp are €1.5, €2 is pushing it. A 16W light would cost close to €20 a year. Not as great but still worth it if you enjoy it. Moss however I feel like I can keep selling if I could produce more. mostly 250ml bottles for €10 (8.5 ounces) Overall I find fish are cheap and energy/supplies are more expensive making it harder to make a profit. What about frozen food? I feed my shrimp some blood worms and dahpnia, just because they seem to like it more.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 месяца назад
I think in Europe you'd need to do this with a fancy caridina. Here we still have 5 to 10 dollars per neo at retail shops. Our energy is also much cheaper than most of Northwestern or Central Europe

That $120,000 a year that someone got excited about does not understand that’s not how it works. Shrimp 🦐 must be the most sensitive little critters I have ever kept. Alex will attest to the fact that your tanks will regularly crash so the math does not work the way you think. You should definitely try it though because you brought it up so there’s nothing anyone can tell you that you will not believe unless you experience it yourself so yes try to make $120,000 a year on 100 little shrimp tanks & see how you go & let this channel Know how you went. Extreme few people have the experience, know how & understanding Alex has. Even if you do exactly everything, Alex says to the word it’s not physically possible for anyone person to control all parameters at all times of all aquariums. As long as you’re prepared to have lots of tanks crash & lose lots of money & time then you eventually you might be successful but no you can not just get 100 tanks & make $120,000. Go ahead & try it though. Let us know how you do. Good luck.

Wow hater much? Just because you suck at fishkeeping doesn't mean everyone does. My tanks have been going for 2 years without any issues besides algae. My favorite lfs does over 3k a month in shrimp sales alone. Obviously his colonies are raised in bigger tanks. But he's had the same exact bloodlines for over 10 years that all started from groups of 50. His colonies never drop below 300 to keep genetics strong. Shoot he makes a few hundred a month on his culls alone, selling them at $2. So don't go criticizing someone for asking a question. Acting like you're some know it all or something. You sound like NOTHING but a clown that can't keep their tanks in order.
