Awesome video! Very well done, and great quality voiceovers. I wanted to update you on my red lizard loaches: they've been starting to gobble up the small sized bloodworms and fatten up! Cool to see as they haven't been too keen on flake food, and I've only seen them show interest in a wafer once. They definitely enjoy grazing on my anubias leaves and driftwood as well, possibly bolstering their gut bacteria

in general, it is hard to make money breeding fish. a nice facility and a well-connected network are needed, mainly to optimize time and resources. to the average hobbyists: do it because you love it. if the emphasis is placed on breeding for profit, it is likely that the hobby becomes much less fun. while the overview of the video is pretty good, i would just point out that - in case someone is interested - except for maybe 2-3 species, most Parosphromenus spp. are insanely difficult to breed, and taking a step back, even maintaining them is best left to specialists. they are not suitable for most hobbyists, not to mention beginners. they basically have no defense mechanism - maybe except camouflage in dark water - they typically live in areas where no predator exists, where the pH can occasionally reach 3, and so are extremely sensitive to poor water quality and bacterial populations. with a restricted range and facing habitat loss, most are threatened with extinction. they are more popular in europe, where a group of experts maintain most species. to breed them, most likely pH 4~5 is required, raising the youngsters is a separate challenge, and even after that, the market for these species is small. see the Parophromenus project for more details
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 месяца назад
I definitely agree with the breeding for profit. Also, it's why I said: " A good goal is to simply pay for the fish you purchased. Success as a hobbyist is anything beyond that". However as someone who's lived off the hobby entirely funded by fish and plant keeping along with this ( relatively speaking small sized) RU-vid channel. Definitely location location location for selling fish, and or as you say networking online and at regional or national events is a must, If you want to make thousands in profits. It's really not a realistic job for 99% of folks I'd say... but can pay for itself with a bit of care and dedication. I was told that licorice gourami would be extremely difficult to keep let alone spawn...and I kept some hoping to just keep the pair alive... not even 3 weeks later they spawned for me In a filterless tank...and parents did end up picking off some babies... and ate all my caridina shrimp... and ph was 5.5 to 6 or so. I've since then had a total of 3 spawns, but perhaps I lucked out...or perhaps just shoving a little 5g full of botanicals any near RO tap water ( our tds is 10 to 25ppm).
@kmingtam
@kmingtam 4 месяца назад
@@Fishtory yea location and network are important factors, need to select those that breed well or sell well. though competition may then become an issue. good job and congrats on your success with them! they do like still water a lot, and the botanicals likely helped significantly as well. the few species that are more available are easier to trigger, the ones you can get only through the organization are much more difficult

I have 70 tanks and breed for profit and I’d like to point a few things out. Angelfish are terrible to breed and most people don’t have enough space to breed them properly. I’m talking grow out ya is of 180 gallons. Rainbows take way to long to grow out to be profitable, Limia and goodeid dare not a good choice for a livebearer, not enough people are looking for them, they lack color, and don’t fetch a good enough price. Especially considering guppies and other livebearers will produce you about 29 more fry a month. I’d stay away from these fish and most African mouth brooding cichlids for the simple reason everyone is capable of breeding them. Also if you are getting your breeding stock from a local fish store I wouldn’t expect to be able to sell it for much profit and learn to ship otherwise you are going to fail.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 месяца назад
All very good points. Likewise -I've lived off home breeding and aquatic plant propagation. The main point of this list is for someone just ready to start try breeding as a hobbyist... and what I think are good teaching species for intermediate keepers...but that will either also pay for themselves or be preserving a line or species in peril.

@@guy8646 Swordtails will always do good I think, like most livebearers. If you are doing wild types make sure you set it up for the fry to have places to escape to. In my experience wild type swordtails are very hard on their fry.

Is it common for local fish stores to be interested in fish offered to them? Never dealt with this topic myself I've got 7 unexpected juvenile wild Betta Foerschi, and I really need to find homes for, sell or give to a local fish store. Foerschi are endangered and very beautiful..but not sure about how sought after wild bettas are in general. I was just thinking local fish stores might have their own sources for their fish and choose more sought after fish by aquarist. I'm not experienced in this topic. Loved the photographs of the fish and all the descriptions of the different fish in the video.. Glad you're up and running again spirited as usual!! P.S. I have a Paradise Fish (Macropodus spechti ) and he is spectacular and amazing in so many ways.

Breeding for profit used in the RU-vid world is definitely misleading. If you're raising fish to a proper sellable size, the incoming money versus the true cost of getting them to a proper sellable size rarely equals out. If you sell undersized fish at full price, you have a chance at coming out ahead. Ones market local or online does play a major role in potential.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 месяца назад
100%! Unless you have access to really rare fish/skills to spawn some species AND ... the connections to enough buyers, it doesn't matter if you can churn out fish... wholesale pricing isn't really even worth it in nearly all residential and hobby setups. It's why I mentioned in this video, If you can pay yourself back for the fish and food...yay...If you sell enough to pay for the next species or breeding project, then Halahlula!

But I’ll need another tank.😂 Currently have 7 Sterbais, a year old, in my 55 community tank. They spawned about 3 weeks ago. I tried to get as many eggs off the glass as I could, put them in a breeder box in same tank, but prob newbie error on my part, none hatched. Maybe next time. I’ve been watching vids on the proper process. Seems pretty daunting. Doesn’t mean I won’t keep trying. At least I know they’re happy since they’re spawning.
