I am not taking away from Osaka's win! however comparing what happened on the court is basically, more energy vs. less energy, which is a part of growing older in all sports.
Not necessarily... a younger Serena would also be a less experienced one. You could also say an older more experienced Osaka would have won Serena decisively every time. You can't eat your cake and have it!
Absolutely, but Osaka beating Serena at this age means we can't really compare them at all. We can't bring back say, a 2015 Serena to play Osaka whenever she reaches her prime, so we would never know the real outcome if they both played at 100%.
Osaka did to Serena what Serena used to do to Maria, Azarenka and Halep. Overplayed, outplayed, outserved, out hit, out-clutched, out-run. Basically a total beat down.
Its hard to compare - Serena clearly isn't playing her best tennis and her best tennis may be behind her. Makes me wish we saw a showdown between 2021 Naomi vs. 2012-2015 Serena
Completely different scene to the American open where Osaka beat Serena. No one is booing Osaka here, and not because we don’t love Serena, we just know how to behave. How America treated Naomi was absolutely disgusting in 2018
@@cineastik8220 Unlike most players, Naomi has a very compact swing and she hits her groundstrokes late but her hands are so fast and she's physically very strong that she is able to change the direction of the ball at the very last moment. She also has great timing most of the time. She is a tricky player indeed and wrong footed even top players easily
Another player with that skill--- Bianca Andreescu. Andreescu's is actually more interesting because her game has more variety than Osaka. Bianca has power but she just doesnt have consistent accuracy ( i dont think she physcially is as strong as Naomi) but like everyone stated, she has very compact and short swings but great racket speeds. Compare the swings of Osaka, Bianca with Sabalenka's swing and you could see the difference, night and day. It really benefits when your swing is compact and you can still generate great shape on the ball with racket speed without giving away where you are going with the ball
She’s nowhere now unfortunately. I was so hoping for her to become the dominant player on the tour. She’s such a great player. Hope she finds her way back to the top.
When Osaka starts hitting her strokes with pace and makes u run side to side , she becomes unplayable. Her forehand is best shot on tour right now and opens room for her backhands.
Which is exactly why I said in one comment I made on a different post Serena has to keep the rally’s short with drop shots and volleys and maintain center position she had so many open shots and unforced errors and she played to Naomi’s strengths Serena could have definitely pulled off the win if she just relaxed and played sharp one two punch service games, couple of aces and a war like mentality!!! I didn’t see aggression and power in her play she played with nerves and fear she’s gotta dig deep she’s done it before!!!
The only reason they scream because they swing like a martial artist while Osaka uses the different kind of swing which doesn't need scream but only natural and weight of the swing.. I know how it works
@@Alex-fn7zd I know how it works because I'm 5.0 level tennis player.. And I did lots of research and experiment on techniques...And let me tell you not every pro players knows how they are doing it that is why they need coaches..
Flat out domination. Sheesh. And Osaka doesnt grunt or do anything to put off the opponent. Just flat out outplays the opponent. Might be looking at the next legit legend in Women's tennis. She has everything. Power, finesse, serve, footwork. Ridiculous.
What do you mean by "legit legend"? Who are you claiming that isn't legit? She has a long way until she reaches the bar Serena raised. I love Osaka, but we're not about to dismiss Serena that fast.
This is one of the greatest matches of all history. A legend against a soon-to-be legend. Amazing. All the Serena fans, don't be so salty that she lost. Everybody has to step down at one point where a new generation moves in.
I only played tennis in high school, so maybe I can't say anything here. But this kinda looks similar to how boxers don't always throw their hardest jabs or full momentum jab until they know 95% they can land that solid hit. Because if it hits air, it's just too much expended energy and stamina. It looks like Serena has a lot of strength behind her shots, and it seems that usually that works for her. But Osaka capitalizes on the energy that Serena expends. If Serena can't win in a couple of hits, she just becomes too tired to run around the court, while Osaka looks like she's just redirecting what's being thrown at her.
A young Serena could have returned some of Osaka's winners and put herself in position to hit better angles. Her lack of stamina in her old age and from motherhood forces her to hit as hard as she can and hope to end points early. If she tried to hit softer balls to conserve energy, she still would have lost because Osaka would have just dragged the points as long as necessary.
Serena has been outplayed before, but you can tell during her post interview she knows time is really ticking to the end now. Honestly there was nothing Serena could have done, Naomi just blew her off the court.
Serena played quite well it seems, but I find it satisfying to see the calm determination Naomi showed in deciding to own this moment. I would think she felt just as much pressure as Serena, but now that feeling is transforming into confidence.
For me, neither player were at their best this match, but how Naomi upped her level in the last 2 games of the match shows how mentally tough she is. She did what Serena did to so many opponents throughout her career, and has really grown into one of the most mentally tough players on the tour. She really is becoming the next great player and has grown so much throughout the years to become the player she is now. Serena Williams, it’s unfortunate we didn’t see her best here but what she has achieved in these two weeks is still incredible at this stage of her career. To beat Sabalenka in the 4th round and play such a high quality match against Halep shows she still can play amazing tennis. What she has achieved, and still is achieving is incredible and is certainly so amazing to see her do so well in this time of her career. Really wish the best for Naomi and Serena in the 2021 season.
You are absolutely right. Naomi is slowly but surely becoming a mental giant. She is going to be a really great player in the years to come due to her mental strength
@Honest Abe whiny scar? Serena defined tennis. Naomi wouldn’t even be playing today if it weren’t for the Williams sisters. Serena made Naomi and all the little girls who play tennis right now. You can ask her yourself. Naomi is the successor of Williams. And you are outright pathetic to say that Serena is a scar. Shut up
I didn't watch the highlights till now. The media seems to portray that Serena lost the match because her game broke down on her own. There was an article that says Serena was cruising in the first set. This highlight reel basically showed Osaka totally ran Serena out of the court. Let's give the younger player the credit she deserves. Most players facing Serena will have surrendered the first set after being 2-0 down. Not Osaka, she fought back immediately and won 7 out of the next 8 games to easily win the first set. And to hold serve after being 0-40 down in the second set... Class act of a champion
@@Reallifedigitalgirl Wrong. Stop playing the race card. How do you explain the fact that people dont hate Sloane, Naomi, Madison, Taylor etc the same way they hate Serena? The reason is that they behave like normal grownups on and off the court. Serenas behaves worse than a spoiled three-year old and that is what people cant stand about her.
If Osaka is healthy, at least no big injury, she will win at least 10 grand slams. She could start to think about improving the tennis at clay and grass court and try to win French open and Wimbledon.
Osaka trains with a lot of male tennis players in training camps before big tournaments, so although Serena has heavy power shots, it’s just basically something Osaka see’s from the men all the time so she deals with it like a pro.
When beauty meets grace... Osaka. 😘❤️. Literally the first time me watching her play. So much power and tenacity! Coming from this sleek, gorgeous ,agile queen. All I saw was a glorious lioness, ripping apart her prey. God bless you Osaka! 💗😍.
Naomi's humble and genuine attitude and mentality would never get old and faded. That would only keep inspiring and influencing many young stars to come. Naomi Osaka is true bright SUPER STAR.
Not quite yet; she has to get at least 1 of the other 2 grand slams to be given that title. I also know she can do it because she a naturally gifted tennis player

Serena still has the ability to beat Osaka, it's more of a matter of not being able to bring that level of play to every match. This was the semi-finals and she was giving everything in the last match with Halep to crush her quickly.
Serena tried to make it sound like the match was on her racquet and that her errors were her own undoing. This wasn’t about Serena making errors; Osaka was bullying her into errors. She couldn’t execute her usual gameplan because Osaka was having none of it and not allowing her to
The statisticians disagreed. 24 UNFORCED errors from Serena and 45% of first serves in play. Serena was right, had chances to be up 5-0, but she handed the first set over on a silver platter.
@@bryanmartin5901 they were unforced in the sense that Serena was trying to make more of her shots than Naomi was allowing her to. She was under so much pressure from Osaka that merely keeping the ball in play was not an option; she wanted to return 120-mph serves with interest instead of punting them back for fear that Osaka will put the next ball away with contempt.
@@bryanmartin5901 She forced it upon herself. Serena could have hit with more clearance but she needed to put more on the ball because of the pressure Osaka was applying on her
Naomi's backhand at 8:56. Reminded me of Agassi's against Nadal in one match. Just out of world from that position. Her angles r crazy! 3 bhs in that game!
Someone just took every previous woman's best shots and stuffed them into Osaka. Serena serve, Graf forehand, Seles backhand, Evert mentality. All she needs to unlock now is the footwork stat to get the other two slams. This was her at like 70%.
Serena needs to play like Serena when she is in a higher demand. Seems like she forgot what made her one of the all time most powerful tennis players in the world.
Osaka really seemed comfortable with her strings, frame and court speed/bounce here... low scoops lifted and hit deep or short with pace or cross court but never weak defensive replies, fast hard shots returned and directed with interest!!! This was amazing form.
Watching Osaka beating Serena literally gave me chills, reminds me of our Brazilian glory days when Gustavo kuerten was dominating the courts and was our Brazilian pride , Japan must be real proud
Osaka is playing like Medvedev right now. Both on another level. Her skill mixed with power is incredible. She completely outskilled Serena placing her shots where she wanted. Unbelievable. She looks like princess peach in nintendo wii tennis.
yeah, that one still is a bitter taste for any sports fan. that was totally uncalled for. I mean, the poor girl was crying and in tears (and I think she was 18 too). The thing that irritates me the most - she was already losing so it felt like a sore loser picking a fight somewhere else to project their frustration
It was a brutal experience as it was her first open win it think and she looked up to serena too. Sad to see the person u looked up to treat it like that
It's amazing that Serena is OLD in sports years and still playing. She's 39 or 40 in this match. We don't expect her to beat the young guns coming up. But we admire her tenacity to still compete.
Worth watching the extended highlights of the encounters in order to analyze the crucial positions and significant moments. At the same time, it comprises the movement of rallies, flow of the strikes and the composure, enabling us to deliver the viable commentaries
Serena had a really good chance to make it to her 24th given her wide open group of opponents. But, Serena is no match to Naomi in this match. It’s very clear.
I can’t say it was a wide open draw if anything the top draw that Ash Barty was playing was wide open Serena had to face 3 major opponents just to get to the Semifinals Sabalenka was ranked 22 in the world and Halep was ranked 2 in the world and up next was Naomi.
the thing is serena loses to Naomi the exact same way - like the last time. you would think by now she would correct her flaws - when playing her- she doesn't move side to side . If serena would do that - she would easily beat Naomi.
@@arieslove6144 it’s more to it although you are correct it’s about the serve and the return. She doesn’t need to go into long rallies with Naomi because Naomi is the quicker athlete she will win 9/10 so Serena needs big 1st serves and aces or a one two punch return nothing more win the point!
@@antoniogrant200 i can see that also 'the crazy thing is .i like naomi ' serena has beaten ( in my opinion only) better quicker player's. Congrats to her 4 winning the ao '
Serena had chances to even win 26 slams against Muguruza, Halep and Kerber but she barely moved those years. Osaka is just too good and gives Serena no opening.
The two shot from 8:55 are out of this world. I would have felt complete hopelessness watching those whiz by me. Her forehand production is also unreal.
I have never seen Serena being bullied around the court like this match. Age has gotten to her and that's the law of nature which is understandable. So far no one in women's tennis has escaped such law. However age is just a number in men's tennis for the Big 3 who have been toying their much younger opponents in their twenties with ease and dominant wins.
The only time anyone bullied Serena like this was when Sharapova did it in the Wimbledon final 2004. Then again in the 2016 final vs Muguruza, but that was when age was beginning to catch her, ditto for Halep at Wimbledon 19.
urmmm none of the big 3 have won a grandslam over 37 and after giving birth. Serena has sure been to more finals that Fed has in the since 2018... Rafa wont win another slam and Novak has to win his others within the next two years or he is done
Serena is playing a younger calmer versions of herself. At this level it reminds me of the mens game. You can't just blast throught your opponents to be #1. You gotta play smart. Osaka played smarter tennis and is faster. Serena cant defend as well because she's not as quick and to break someone serve you have to defend well. It's not enought holding serve. That's why big servers rarely make it to the top level with just serve alone
Serena totally went off her game and Osaka grew in confidence. I think Serena still has a better game, but she knows how good Osaka is. It requires Serena to bring her A game and I think the pressure she’s putting herself under makes it hard to find. It would be a great match if both played their best against each other.
Osaka played similar to Halep in the Wimbledon final. Halep made the ball bounce high on Serena’s backhand. Osaka made the ball bounce high close to Serena’s body on both sides.
Maybe on serve but not on ground strokes. Osaka hits flat only with the least variety of any GS winner in recent memory, hence zero titles on any surface besides fast hard court
@@bryanmartin5901 indian wells and us open r slow courts. Aus open is fast. She won on slow hcs too Naomi didnt get chance to add on other surfaces since covid hit last year.
@@bryanmartin5901 naomi wont be loosing sleep with her 4 slams n many to come. If ostapenko can win french, naomi can too. Big serve, forehand , backhand movement. She doesnt need variety to win
@@deepakmahajan4978 they are not slow at all, they are hard courts so they are still faster than any clay including Har Tru. Just bc they are a bit slower than grass and a handful of extremely fast hard courts does not mean they are slow LOL
I told my grown daughter to keep an eye on this female in 2017. Look how she has replaced Serena in tennis and as a legitimate role model icon. She's a Upgrade baby!
Terrible comparison. Maybe an alienware? Serena just need to stop focusing on her emotions and get some better mental training. She was too demanding of the grandslam record thing in her brain and forgot to check her own history... Her health is spot on...Her body isspot on...Shegot to thesemifinal because she knows that. She now needs to focus on how she lost and fix it. Winning, as she is tired to know, is a lonely practice.
@@afrofeast I think she will. I predict her winning 12 majors by the time she is 29-30. So its really upto her to go for greatness and maintain her physical and mental self in her 30s.
@@afrofeast i dont really know why she isnt good in grass courts i mean she has a powerful serve and also powerful groundstrokes, imo its just a matter of timw before she get used to it
@@afrofeast Yea Osaka still has to learn how to play on clay, I do think with her style she will win on grass sooner. It took 4-5 years on tour for Serena to finally win the French Open and Wimbledon.
Good job Osaka 👍. But I must say to whomever got a chance to see these two play in real time, what an honor and privilege to be just in the presence of these two on court...Serena, a icon, a true legend, the game changer and Osaka who is building her legacy no doubt. Great to see Serena still playing at her age with the fire and determination to continue doing what she loves, she hasn't lost anything you ask me, as she has nothing to lose, she has builded her legacy and this is all extra for us and I truly thank you for that and Naomi who continues building her stats, dominating the sport and showing us consistency. This is why she will claim at least 10 grand slams at a minimum because she has the greatest to do it and become the #1 player in WTA for many more years. Damn this is Awesome. #HistoryInTheMaking
With the exception of Wimbledon, Naomi has beaten Serena in straight sets at 3 of her favourite hunting grounds. Miami 2018, US Open 2018 and Australian Open 2021, Serena won titles 8 in Miami, 6 in NewYork and 7 in Melbourne. It’s fair to say that mantle has definitely been passed on to the new Queen ❤️
Why is this highlights showing more of Serena's points though Naomi Osaka had won the match ? It was a ruthless domination by Naomi, and the highlights should reflect that. Too biased towards Serena, as usual 😑😞
