The Napa Valley Model Railroad Historical Society has a long history dating back to almost 70 years ago. This group has existed in one way or another at three different locations. The Napa Valley Northern Railroad is a DCC equipped proto-lance depiction of the local area, and they run operations using track warrants. The layout tour is one part layout tour and one part op session.

I really enjoy these layouts. I'll be 80yrs old in 2 months and am pretty much homebound. I bought a 55" TV and watch these videos from my Medical Lounge Chair along with my Diabetes Service Dog Duke (8 1/2yr old Black Labrador). I have always loved trains had a couple model train layouts when I was a kid some 70yrs ago, a little different back then. I'm quite new at this, and this is the first time I have put a comment online. I'm learning and loving it.

Thank you for taking the time to make this! As Robert mentioned, the radio traffic is a bit much for me when it comes to watching this video, but I'm glad you included the radio traffic as it does document how they ran their layout.

What an amazing layout John! I'm so thankful that you made the effort to document this fine operation. Loved the way the way track warrants were issued and used. The radio chatter was so authentic and easily compares it to my scanner monitoring of the KCS here in Dallas. What a terrific layout video. Thanks again! (Two thumbs up!!)

What a great Video!!! The operations was the best love the track warrants, We need more videos that show more about operation. Anyone can do videos of trains running in circles, it is professionals the show the actual operations of a railroad model.

Thanks! I was hesitant to include all the track warrants, but this is how the guys at the place wanted to portray their layout. I don't tell people how to do things like that because I believe in the "hey man it's my layout" approach. :))

Well, it's always fun to play with toys. Some guys have cars as toys and they like to play with those. I have computers that are my toys and I like to play with those. I also have some N-scale trains myself, but they are all on a very small shelf layout in my large bookcase, so it is a 'bookcase layout' (very small).

Nice layout.... It seems to be missing automation though. - My ideal layout, if I ever get to do it... (easy to be an armchair quarterback).... is to have a couple of main lines running passenger trains totally automatic... crossing between both main lines but with train sensors - so that they slow down / stop / speed up when needed.... along with automated switches going off at different times.., stopping at stations, automated working signals with the correct lights lit, and even a couple of working rr crossings. The passenger train cars will be lit.. and the whole thing runs at night.

Here's hoping the Napa Expo management comes to their senses and keeps this treasure in lieu of adding a few more parking spaces that will only occasionally be used. I also hope this isn't the last we see of this fine model railroad.

Great model railroad......so sad that they’re being evicted. In so far as the video , it was just ok , as I’d like to have seen much much more of the layout itself. The operational realism was great , however way way too much precious time was wasted ( IMHO) reading and repeating and reading back every track warrant ......for me one example would have sufficed. I’ll wager that at least ⅓ of the video time “ I watched grass grow” as the train had its many warrants read, repeated ad nauseaum and sat at a signal / siding etc. I think there was an incredible amount of the railroad that was never seen , and that is truly sad. 😢😢
@tsgmultimedia
@tsgmultimedia 4 года назад
I had mixed feelings about the operational focus, as I also thought the track warrants were too frequent, but it does demonstrate how they run it. It has always been up to the layout presenters how they want to share their layouts. I've always been pretty hands-off in that regard.

Great model RR layout but I could do with just the voice of the man doing the narration, the full stops waiting for the train's engineer and the dispatcher to do their thing is a little boring to me. I've been skipping the dispatching parts as IMO they're to long one of the stops in the video was 2 minutes 10 seconds long, I just want to see the train running...anyway to each their own.

Stopped watching half way through when we went into another 5 minute long static shot while listening to the track warrant. It was fun the first time, then became annoying with bad audio to boot. Would rather have seen more of the layout.

I agree. It is enough to know that they use Track Warrants without all the radio traffic. Also, when the narrator talks about the industries served at a location, it would have been nice to see them like at the first setout location.

Was hoping to see more or the layout...as nice as the footage was it didn't tour the areas as much as I would have liked...lots of stills of the same train and radio chat got annoying while the structures and scenery remain out of focus..Maybe more an operations film not so much a tour.

@@tsgmultimediaHaha... I don't mean to offend but I don't really enjoy watching stationary model trains...like I said...it was an operations film...not a tour. Maybe it should be renamed. Still a great layout and film of operations just has no scenery or industry content.
