This is my dad's favorite scene from that movie. I got him a pair of the flag pants for Christmas one year, and whenever he puts them on, he walks around and calls everyone Peter Pan.
The first time I watched this movie was over ten years ago and it STILL cracks me up when kip does that lame ass leg sweep and Rex jumps and smacks his head and says "ok that was pretty good."

Perfectly! Plus, it nails small town life in the Inland Empire hill country of Eastern Washington, Oregon, Idaho (where it takes place), and northern Utah. I lived in that region for years, and it’s just *perfect*. The fashion, the “stuck in 1989” houses, fashion, and mannerisms. This movie will never get old, because it too is stuck in that era. That's why it's called "self" respect . As in , Do you have enough respect for yourself ? So what if people humiliate and insult you . It's still all about how you feel about you at the end of the day . Nobody else has that control over you , except you.
Never noticed this before but this scene sets up a subtle character arc of ND adopting Rex's mantras: 1. The Buddy System - what motivates him to befriend Pedro 2. Discipline your image - starts with the suit, evolves into learning dancing and Future Farmers of America skills 3. Self Respect - ND has the confidence and self respect to dance in front of the whole school to help his mate achieve his goal And all of it deadpan, ridiculous and brilliant

There are lots of hidden messages in this gem of a movie. I love that 80s elevator music in the background... it totally represents the quaint setting of the film. I'd love to go back in time to the 70s or 80s ...I was there, and things were much less stressful and complicated back then.
@tyruslawhorn Yes. But the film contains several culturally retroactive elements harkening back to the 1980s or 1990s. For example, Deb wears a side ponytail, and Napoleon wears Moon Boots, both popular back when I grew up in the late 70s and 80s. The music, too, reminded me of my youth.
There's so many little things that add to the level of humour. He says grab my arm, but offers both arms up, giving Kip an option to pick the wrong arm. There was no need to put both arms out. Yet he did it, to add more comedic effect. It's such a beast of a movie.
or the writing on the wall, it's so cheesy it's hilarious 🤣 I thought the point with the arm was to make fun of many hip martial arts, that only work when your opponent does something precisely how they're told, and then waits for you to do your counter, which never happens in real fight
I went to a karate school back in the 90’s that competed in tournaments and there really were instructors like this. Our local Rex was called Tokyo Joe and he did wear American flag and sometimes sequin parachute pants.
90s. I went to a tae kwon do school where one of the younger instructors, an Asian American guy, few his hair long, had it in a ponytail and emulated Lu Keng in any way he could. Also, the soundtrack there was always eurodance. Yes indeed, the 90s.
Parachute pants and Tokyo Joe’s were also an 80’s thing . I remember way back in the Kenpo Kung Fu days , that’s really how it was. It’s all fun and games til a Kenpo Brown belt kicks you in the eyeball with his Bigtoe, on purpose!
Out of all the places I have tried out with martial arts I have to say I agree with you lol most of the teachers in those places are posers and out for a persons money. They throw around black belts like it’s water and the people who have them can’t even do a body roll.
One of my favourite lines from this movie: "We use the buddy system... NO MORE FLYIN' SOLO!" which, of course, implies that something went drastically wrong before they started using the buddy system.

Every scene is the movie is just pure comedic genuis. I’ve never been able to rewatch something so much and still get the same first time entertainment value.
I cannot tell you how cool it was to see this in theaters when it first came out. I have NEVER been to a film where the entire audience was laughing hysterically every 10 seconds until seeing Napoleon.
I saw it in theaters when it came out also. I had no idea what it was about and never saw a trailer. I took a chance, and I laughed my butt off the whole movie!!
Everyone giving this thumbs up don't realize the sarcasm of the post. The film OPENS with Napoleon, he is implying the movie wasn't funny. What's more, he's confirming the fans are idiots because you all have no reading comprehension.

Just realized that his steps for the program mirror what goes on in the movie 1)Buddy System-Napoleon befriends Pedro and Deb 2)Discipline your image-Napoleon gets that suit for prom, Pedro shaves his head, and Uncle Rico and Kip get IDs 3)Self-Respect- clearly Napoleon's dance, Pedro becomes president, Kip meets Lafawnduh, and Rico meets that random bike chick
What I love about this scene is Napoleon kinda applied the Rex Kwon Do rules by dressing with a suit, having Pedro watch his back and the other way around
Kip says, "Well, that class was a rip off. " Napoleon doesn't agree with him because he stayed silent. Napoleon was actually impressed, I mean look what Rex did to Kip, Napoleon's big brother. Napoleon would like to take the 8 week course but can't afford it so he uses the information at hand. Like kids repeating things they heard on a late night infomercial.

I related when napoleon worked on that farm and the farmer goes "forgot my checkbook, hope you don't mind me paying you in change" and napoleon counts it "what the heck?!?! That was like a dollar an hour!" Fuckin cheap people out in the country that take advantage of high schoolers

yugioh is still here e.e they just hardly show it on tv because to many complains about how 4kids was ruining the story of yugioh so 4kids shutdown and the only way to find episodes is online to catch the latest ones, btw yugioh is no what i used to be pendulums are bad now yugioh is no longer a cool thinking and fighting with what you love it's all you must play this or lose.

I'm right on the Tennessee/Kentucky border. I've been to Covington before. I actually went and seen Dave Chappelle do standup in Newport a few years ago. Chappelle lives exactly 1 hour northeast of Covington on a farm in Ohio. I like it up there.
I am biased as this is one of my all time favourite comedy movies of all time, and this scene never ever fails to make me laugh. Just had to show the film to my daughter because she is taking up karate and couldn’t figure out why I kept shouting ‘Bow to your Sensei!’ Every time she mentions it 🤣
This actor (Diedrich Bader) is such a scene stealer in some classic comedies. Here in Napoleon Dynamite, and then a few scenes in Office Space as Peter’s neighbor (the “fuckin’ A” guy).
I love how the scene before this, Kip would not go get Napoleon from school when he was sick and still Napoleon pulled Kip into town when all Kip needed to do was skate. Napoleon loves his family :)

One thing I like about this scene is how they actually made it look like some Mcdojo you’d see here in the southern US. I’ve done martial arts for many years now and it just amazes me how accurate this whole setup is.
I feel like the 3 things Rex says he will teach them, self respect, self image, and the buddy system are all things Napolean learns throughout the movie. The more I watch this movie I feel like it is very deep wit meaning.
They should have ended the movie with Rex giving Uncle Rico a roundhouse kick to the face when he's wearing those bad boys. Just hire a black belt stuntman double. Perfect ending.
