Is pathological narcissism hereditary? Are narcissists self-aware, or more like a virus? What goes on in the mind of a narcissist and why does deceptive fantasy play such a role in it? Do narcissists imitate victims?

Wow, I already know this is going to be a good video. I love your insights and they correspond with what I am intuitively becoming aware of, that narcissism is a very complex and "in flux" phenomenon as you are stating. Thank you for your valuable insights, as always.

Thank you for discussing community transmission and immunity forces. For so long, social support has been promoted as antidote to PTSD and mental stressors. However, it’s a wild, wild world out there. One should not appear available for narcissistic supply.

I'd like to point out that every child in a family system doesn't get the same kind of treatment. In dysfunctional families, each child has a role assigned by the parents, which makes me believe that perhaps parents assigning roles could be in factor in the identity distortions and the child not being able to be their authentic self, therefore contributing to the false self in narcissism.

I’ve read that often there is a scapegoat child in a family with at least one narcissist parent.
@markcowen7573
@markcowen7573 7 месяцев назад
@@SaveStefThis is true. I suspect that I am the scapegoat in my family. I believe these roles can change. I was probably the golden child when I was young and in school. My mother would confide in me about things I was too young to understand like financial problems and my father’s absences, which turned out to be because of his affairs. I have a younger brother and sister who did not experience this. As young adults, my role changed as I got married and had my own family. My sister took this role over. My brother was the scapegoat when we were kids. I am 57 now and only recently came to realize my mom is a covert narcissist and I am the scapegoat. There has always been dysfunction in our family. I tried for the last couple of years to get my mom to attend therapy because I thought my sister was the narcissist. She finally agreed to attend therapy in the fall. But it was all a sham. I won’t bore you with the details. When I realized what was going on, I confronted my mom about it. Not in a hateful way just calling her out for how she had manipulated me. This was the weekend after Thanksgiving and I have not talked to her since. She has reached out to my children in hopes they would agree to see her. They did not agree so none of us have heard from her since then. But at least I know. As much as I wish there was a way out of this, I know there isn’t. Therapy and education help a lot. Sorry for the long comment.

Thank you! I have worked very hard not to be like my mother and grandmother. I have diagnosed depression and CPTSD, but I would rather deal with that than inflict narcissism on my own family. I worried for a long time I would be just like them.

You are doing good! Not just for your family for the future generation to come through your family line... It dooms generation after generation...if someone does not do the necessary healing and therapy. 💚

I find it interesting that studies done with borderline individuals show a genetic component and studies done with narcissistic individuals do not. The definition of BPD cannot be anymore fixed then that of NPD and both will be subject to revisions and changes over time. Surely the genetic makeup and temperament of certain individuals makes them prone to developing NPD in the face of childhood trauma while others exposed to the same trauma do not compensate with narcissistic defense mechanisms.

It begs the question of whether or not this clinical discovery of higher oxidative stress in NPD's may explain the propensity of many (if not most) of them professing they have physical ailments that demand that others take care of them due to their "ailments". The current theories seem to mostly revolve around this behavior simply being a manipulative tactic to obtain supply, but perhaps there is a physiological component that they are instead naturally exploiting and exaggerating to its maximal effect. Fascinating possibilities by these new potential markers of NPD, if they bare out in continued research. Thank you for keeping us updated on this bleeding edge research !

I met a person once who shared a peculiar thing that happened to their brother, who had a motor cycle accident at age 15 that ended in frontal lobe brain trauma, and after this event he became totally transformed into a psychopathic serial killer. Do you think that this brain trauma merely accentuated a covert psychopathy that was already present?
