I resent that Stephen A.Smith said "He's not surprised" given the history of NASCAR. Yeah, NASCAR was born in the South and there was a lot of racism there in the past, but I think the last few generations of drivers have moved past all that, as has the country for the most part. I also don't think the sport is purposely (or covertly) excluding blacks or any other ethnic background. There's a ladder that's climbed in racing, and for one reason or another (probably socio-economic) minorities have never seemed to make auto racing a sport that they aspire to.

The ironic part about it is I guarantee his fellow drivers he was trying to impress more than likely make derogatory Asian remarks behind his back.

FRANKLY, there are more elements in this story than what appear. (1) Kyle Larson was intentional in his actions; he was trying to be just like the good old boys, and (2) this was also an insult to white Americans, whereas Kyle Larson figured that acting ignorant would ingratiate himself to white Americans, and (3) the severe backlash to Kyle's comments can ironically be attributed to racism directed at him because of his mixed Asian-American ancestry. Others seem to be piling on, and I believe it's because he is part Asian.

A NASCAR driver using white supremacist language, I'm shocked!!!😑😑

I am a NASCAR fan for 20+ years, I was a Kyle Larson fan. The man had raw talent like no one else. We all know the back story of this word. But, as an athlete, he should have known more than most the ramifications it would bring. Kyle Larson, a 1/2 Japanese American, a minority in this society, a man who’s grandparents was place into internment camps should know the impact of this racial slur. Yes, he did apologize, on video and not through some post or email. But, the question is, “ Is he truly sorry for saying it, or sorry he got caught?” I would choose the latter of the two. This will be a massive blow to his career, but I do not think it is over. This is not the first, nor will it probably be the last that a NASCAR driver uttered that word. The last driver who did it, missed a few races, but eventually came back and still races today. If/When the NASCAR season starts back, we will see a new face in the #42, the first time in 7 years. I do think this change was coming at the end of the season either way, but it is done. A very talented driver will miss some races maybe the whole season, but smaller teams with no backing will hire him. Teams like Gaunt Brothers, Rick Ware, or Preminum, will hire him just off talent. He still gets support for Plan B sales, who currently sponsors some cars maybe one of those teams can get him and them to come on board. In the end, Kyle Larson will know be consider a bust. A driver who was probably well on his way into better equipment let a 30 lap race simulation end what could have been.

I can recall not long ago seeing Bill Maher use that word in an off color manner on his Politically Incorrect show on HBO last year. He immediately apologized and then spent the next week being held to task and devoted the next episode of Politically Incorrect to discuss his mistake. Maher was able to maintain his livelihood - an old white guy. Yet, here is Larson, a young white guy who happens to drive for Nascar, and he's getting absolutely crucified. I had a little hope we'd started to turn another corner in this country with what happened with Bill Maher. Boy was I wrong.
