NASCAR Engine Pistons & Rods Evolution: Lake Speed's Vintage Ford C3 Gets Modern Technology!

In our previous videos with Lake Speed Sr and Jr you saw us load up an old engine he had sitting in his former Winston Cup race shop for almost 20 years for a rebuild! In THIS video we head to the CP Carrillo Factory and get the full details on the brand new custom pistons designed for this engine to make more power! They also pull out some parts to show us the evolution of NASCAR Rod and Piston technology from the early 90s until present day! The lowdown on the series is this: Lake has a 1993 Purex Thunderbird left over from his days as an owner driver that he briefly used in vintage racing in the early 2000s. He has not driven a stock car since then. We are going to refresh this period correct engine and Lake is going to get back in his old car at 74 years old!!

Well I would hope so. 9/9.5-1 compression did pretty well in my book. Throw some compression in and the C3 heads will shine!

Small end of the rod, pin, piston and rings are reciprocating weight the reduction of which IS MORE CRITICAL than rotating weight. Reciprocating weight must be accelerated from a dead stop TWICE every rotation. Cut 5 grams off of each reciprocating assembly for a total of 40 grams and you will have better results than removing 50 pounds from the car weight.

@@TheJagjr4450 … good point. 5 grams isn’t very much under normal circumstances but when taking into consideration the mean piston speed velocity along with the forces involved during the starting/stopping cycles, the dynamics are HUGE !!! Automotive engineering technology and metallurgy suddenly become very important, but that’s just a small portion of the big picture, indeed 🏁

You are living a legendary life, when you're like 80 years old on your front porch with your grandkids telling them these stories and show them the videos of the people that you met. The advancement in technology is a game changer in engine building. Back in the 80’s and early 90’s it took a lot of time and money to get to the horsepower numbers that you can get now and at a fraction of the cost. Plus the availability of parts now at the touch of your fingertips is incredible. I hate to be that old guy but, the younger generation getting into motorsports is almost spoiled.

Lake, I honestly believe that if it was more fun, they would make it ILLEGAL 😵‍💫. Or perhaps just treat it like a Cleveland during its reign of domination in the early years, with its canted valve advantage and restrict, penalize, ban or castrate it right out of competition all because of the way it would convert the high velocity intake charge into horsepower. No smoke and mirrors….just a touch of C3 magic 🏁🏆. Let the good times roll, my friends 👌.

Neat to see the evolution of those parts. With the compression bump on Lakes motor I think it will really pick up some power. If it isn’t mid 700 hp or more I will be surprised.

Cp Carrillo is by far the best piston and rod company. At least on the quad racing side lol. I’ve been racing quads for 35 years. Every engine I build gets this combination and never once have I had a failure using CP products. I installed a set of CP pistons and rods in my 93 Saleen mustang about 6-7 years ago. Original 302 block pretty rowdy cam stroked to a 347 and cp pistons and rods. 12k miles later she’s still is running super strong with zero complaints.

its anmazing how much a nascar piston resembles a modern motocross bike piston. Bridgebox design and ring packs aside...they are also VERY similar to a 20 year old subaru piston

Thanks for showing the things behind the making and evolution of a small part of racing engines. Actually the evolution goes all the way back to mid 1900s here in USA but even further in Europe. For the kids out there , these parts are not cheap, and tho they talk lasting a long time, other than long races, most race engines run only a few total minutes a year at full throttle. Did you catch the man say they use to have to change engines in their car 3or 4 times a weekend. It’s great to be able to extend the life of the parts , simply amazing .

This is another really interesting episode with real players being interviewed. I've been wanting to pull the engine out of a 2002 Ford F-150 I have, a 4.2 liter v6, rebuild it with twin turbos. I put a different transmission in it with parts that could take a motor with those modifications. This another stepping stone video.

I have watched all of the videos with Lake so far. I never knew that he was as good a driver that he really is. I always thought that he was one of those field filler guys. I have been watching NASCAR since the mid 90's, and never knew as much as I know now. What is interesting to me is that I own one of the rods from Bobby Labonte's championship winning car (the official paperwork does not say which race it was raced in) and it looks very much like the 1997 rod. It weights 561 grams.

@@arkhsm …That’s an excellent point mate. But I don’t understand why it’s hardly ever mentioned here in the States. When the big sanctioning body mandated the cookie cutter approach to US Pro Stock competition, my formerly rabid enthusiasm level for PS crashed and burned so I found something more interesting to occupy my time. The choices are endless because EVERYTHING IS MORE EXCITING THAN THE CURRENT LEVEL OF PS. The good news is that it won’t sink any lower. It’s at rock bottom now so an upward swing seems within the realm of positive Changes. If lightning has a chance of striking twice, a 16 car qualified field of excellence just might have a chance for a second coming. Fortunately I shot several thousand feet of Hi-8 film with audio during the seventies and eighties so I can flashback to the pinnacle of Pro Stock greatness as needed 🏁. If I understand the current generation of Aussie Pro Stock , I believe there’s several ALL FORD Competitors that frequently kick ass with 400 inches of Cleveland style, canted valve superiority. If this is true, then no wonder there’s very little coverage of Aussie PS In the States. The biased media has a weird hatred for Fords. Oh well…. And the beat goes on…..✌🏻

The story about the cams in the aeroplane, we had the same at Ilmor with cranks delivered from Mecachrome for the Honda Indy V8.. they would fail inspection unless they heat soaked for 24 hours... i am a CMM guy, our big one will measure 13ft diameter, and you could walk through it and not bang your head. I am nerding out on this stuff

I can hardly wait to see the end result of this build , if you get a chance you should do a story on Ronnie Hoover , he was a fabricator for several teams back in the heyday of NASCAR working for some of the best teams in NASCAR and is one of the current leaders in restoring a lot of cars from back in those days for customers now .

WOW. Technology has sure come a long way in the last 30 years. I had no idea there were different types of coatings on piston rings. Lake Jr is sharp as a tack with this stuff and it's so cool and interesting to listen to him talk about all this stuff and why they do it. His knowledge on machine work and such and his enthusiasm to learn is very impressive. Can't wait to see the final product on the dyno. I would love to see this for crankshaft evolution. That has to be mind blowing how they have changed. Ask Lee Holman about a "NASCAR" 427 FE Rod /crank. The rod in your hand you will get what I mean.

The one guy said something that I ask all my customers and that is “what are your plans in five years from now with this chassis?” I’m a fabricator who builds chassis’s and or roll cages for race cars. If they don’t have a long term plan then you spur them on to thinking of that before you even start with them, because it does make a difference!

I was the biggest lake speed fan. I remember when he was racing the spam car my family took me to his shop and they were not allowing tours. After my mom begged the receptionist allowed just me to go in the shop to take some pictures. I was so excited and nervous my hands were shaking horribly and all of my pictures came out blurry. It was a cool experience just wish my pictures came out. Lol

Very cool video with good tech stuff! Excellent info on rods, pistons, pins and the like. Used a set of Carrillo rods in my motorcycle engine many years ago for a heavily modded engine, they outlasted the rest of the engine and I sold them for more than what I paid for them. H-beam rods such as Carrillo's offerings are very strong and will hold up where others fail. Thank you both so much for your time & efforts to continue to bring all of us such great video content, much appreciated as always, and am there with you for the duration! Keep up the good work!😎👍

You both have hit on something here that I hope you continue to do and that is taking deep dives into the history with the people that were there to keep that forever in video form. Also what your doing with this project, a kind of “what if” approach to this engine build is very creative it makes for very interesting content. I personally like very much what you are both doing. You have one hell of a partner (I’m speaking to both of you at the same time!) because your partners in the truest sense of the term! There are not many women that do the things that you do and he shows that he knows that and that is great to see! Good job guys!

I'd suggest they get in touch with Erica Enders after this series is finished. Get them to discuss their season with Dodge. Just keep this type of videos going. As somebody said, I can watch burnouts on plenty of channels. This is completely unique.

It boggles my mind the amount of time, science, engineering, designing, and experimenting goes into making one part. The sum man hours of experience is staggering. Then the one part is partnered with another with equal amount of work and so on and so on. Purely to go fast ole son!

I really love all of these race shop videos. I have been into Nascar since the 60's and can remember all of these teams. I don't think you've made a video that I haven't loved. We used to go to the airport with our rods and cranks and blocks and shot phenom and magnavoxum for cracks to make sure we could run a whole season without a problem does anybody shot being anymore
