inhuman perfection. there is not a single mistake or off moment, in not the tiniest detail. which is something most singers struggle to achieve in much easier songs. but natalie dessay achieves this in the most murderous coluratura piece possible. and to me this performance here is the absolute best of this song ever recorded. the voice is ideal, the technique is rock solid, the skill immense. and i am always pleased to hear a true and proper trill. which is kind of rare nowadays. this cannot be sung better than she does here. incredible.
I agree I've listened to 20 versions this is ny opinion the most difficult aria ever and this is the finest rendition ever recorded, and as much as I love Sabine Develhe. .. my next favorite, she can't hold a candle next to this performance
Meredith Anne this aria is why "Lakme" is hardly ever performed. In the opera is comes at the end of the 2nd act. As a recital piece it's easier to pull off. However, Dessay in her prime pulled the role off with ease.
Où va la jeune Hindoue (Lakmé), Popoli di Tessaglia by Mozart, Martern aller Arten (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Der Hölle Rache (Die Zauberflöte), Il Dolce Suono (Lucia di Lammermoor), In Questa Reggia (Turandot) are some very challenging arias for a soprano to sing properly.
It does happen but it sounds like this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pJbDhOPptyY.html the BEST version, better than Natalie Dessay 100x
Even though I enjoy Dessay and find this rendition incredibly appropriate and emotive, I also love Callas, Sutherland and Lily Pons (the most agile of all imo). The dark voice Callas had somehow adds a different layer to this aria, which is always associated with a lighter, brighter, "silvery" voice. Even with all the weigh, darkness and "viscosity" of her timbre she manages to do all the passages with extreme agility and grace. She lightens her voice incredibly easy too when she wants. She had crazy control. I don't think we should choose just one favorite rendition, but explore all the possible nuances and find the miracles (and the eventual tragedies! Lol).
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D4oM7UP-FII.html the best? She doesn't uses the ladder to go up but definitely uses it to come down from the high notes...
@@panaceiasuberes6464 Very nice indeed, the singing that is. But her French is terrible though, a complete turnoff, sorry. Like in de Duo des fleurs sung by Garancha and Netrebko. Love these ladies, but their French is just horrible. I know I should transend this problem that must hit a lot of Italians and Germans when hearing foreign opera singers sing in their language, but I can't unhear it.
@@sergevandenplas8035 she is french, I am french and she perfectly pronounces MY LANGUAGE. She doesn't roll the "r" because she is modern and you have not to roll the "r" in modern french. You do it in French Baroque song but in baroque period, the french is differently pronounced. You can understand all what she is singing which is very rare !
1:26 wow a high F right off the bat! and a beautiful high G sharp above high C at 5:38! and every high E is fabulous! Her vibrato is so fast, her runs are so accurate and amazing, her tone is incredibly gorgeous and full of emotion- Natalie Dessay is absolutely incredible :)
+DoctorWhoBAMF Ah, I think you're right! I was listening to this with my score and cadenza options and I thought it was one of the ones I was looking at. Man though, I think this is becoming one of my favorite recordings of her.
It's funny reading you girls. Don't get me wrong I'm not laughing at you; I wish I were as educated as you in the opera field. I don't know if it's a high C, a F# or what but it's AMAZING
She used to be so incredible!! This is perfect... Her singing here is so natural, like her sensitivity and musical expression, like her attitude... she's so french in the best way! But I must say, why did she lose some of her qualities in singing? Anyway, now I know I must hear her first recordings!
all we can do is love them for the time we have them...then listen to their recordings and remember..........so many great singers in a lifetime.......

I think she is the best coloratura soprano ever. Beautiful high notes(specially 2 Octave G#!!! Oh my....!!! ) Is it even possible to sing that note...??? She did amazing job and I love to hear some more of her singing. Thank you for this video.Truly stellar!!
her voice is beautiful, she reminds me of Lily Pons. It is sad that we don't have the quality of recordings of Lily Pons as we have for this singer. Both sing this with so little effort. Awesome performance
Mozart's 'Queen of the Night' would be a minor warmup exercise to this singer. My God, she can go higher than any other I've heard so far. Plexeglass shattering!
One thing I love about her is she performs. She delivers an unearthly performance and throws herself into the role. Like, she isn’t just singing but she is there inside the character.
I'm stunned...not by high F or whatever, but of her both singing diaphragms and lungs energy - the same strength and balance I heared maybe for Jessye Norman. Amazing vocal base. Which allows these ornamentations to sound, like noone else i can recollect, could do,
@@franzbi8465 do you have to put the same reply on every comment? We get it! Comment on the video itself, or suggest we watch the other one *once*, not 700 times.
I just listened to Maria Callas trying to sing this aria. I say trying because she merely screeches (briefly) the top notes, which Dessay sings with incomparable beauty. This is by far the best performance of The Bell Song that I have ever heard.
This is the beauty of perfection in the human ( or perhaps I should say divine ) voice for all to cherish. This performance is beyond any words , but if I were to choose at least one , even tho it is feeble in it's summation of this performance .. it would be **SUPERB!**
If it isn't sung this well (which one soprano in a million can do,) it would be painful rather than gorgeous. I think I wouldn't want to hear it unless Dessay were Lakmé -- and alas, she is not singing this rep anymore. :( (okay, slight exaggeration. I know there are good coloratura sopranos out there -- but none quite like Natalie at her best!)
She was, in terms of artistry and musicianship, head and shoulders above. And, having a totally different instrument, she could rival her in terms of pure vocal athleticism wich was Sutherland's especialty.
@@fan2jnrc LIsten to this and tell me who did it better. You're right, she doesn't rival Sutherland because no one ever interpreted this aria in a far superior way than Sutherland. Her coloratura and ornamentation was exquisite, but Dessay did interpret excellently ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VvNXbWo1hVc.html
