No matter how many times she jerked Nathan's heart out of his chest, and stomped that sucker flat, he seemed to know what was driving her. It was not disdain or rejection, but the terror of just how much she loved him. She loved Lucas, but not like that. She knew if something happened to Lucas, she would be sad, but could go on. Even separating herself from Nathan didn't work. Everytime he was in danger she was terrified. She had to come to the realization that not being with him, hurt both of them. It also hurt Lucas as he already knew her heart would never be completely his.
It has been so obvious that she was running from her feelings for Nathan. Even when she said she was looking for Jack in him, I don’t believe she was being honest with herself. When Nathan told her how he felt about her, her response was, “It would hurt too much if I lost you the way that I lost Jack.” Right there she separated the two men AND showed she was fearful. Also, she did not deny that she felt the way he did. A word about Lucas-Elizabeth was not as deep with Lucas about her thoughts and feelings as she was with Nathan. And to be honest, Lucas was not as deep with her. Yes, he said the romantic things, the “courting” things, the flirtatious things, but I never felt that they “shared” with one another. I truly believe that we have yet to see a “great love” story for Lucas, and one where his love (the woman he truly falls in love with) brings out those more intimate and deep feelings and thoughts dealing with life. I think when they do write it for him, it is going to be magnificent!
To me she admitted as much after Nathan told her that he was in love with her and she turned to leave and he asked her not to leave and she said, "if I don't leave now I won't be able to". In season 10 when she was at Jack's grave she told him that she wasn't listening to her heart and made the safe choice. She also told Rosemary the same thing and that she didn't know what her heart was trying to tell her and Rosemary told her that she knows what her heart is saying. I believe that Rosemary has known all along that Elizabeth was in love with Nathan and that is why Elizabeth turned against her in season 8 when she was taking up for Nathan by telling Elizabeth that Nathan was acting selfless by wanting to come to Hope Valley to look after her and little Jack and that he wasn't responsible for Jacks death.
@@dorothysampson7414 Yes! All of this! I also believe Rosemary has always known. I remember the time Nathan was riding out of town on his horse and Elizabeth told him to be safe. When she turned back to Rosemary who was sitting on the steps, Rosemary had a look on her face that was sad, concerned, and “knowing”. Also, there were absolutely strong clues in that scene when Nathan admitted his love for her that Elizabeth felt the same way. When he said, “I know you feel the same way I do,” Elizabeth did not deny it. She ran away and made the “safe” choice.

Can someone please tell me what season or episode was the scene from where Elizabeth and little Jack are playing outside of her house and she sees Nathan riding on his horse coming towards them and he stops and they just stare at each other. It's the scene near the end of this video.
