Most store bought dehydrated fruit is soaked in sugar and preserved with sulfites... plus they're outrageously expensive - YIKES!
Making your own naturally dehydrated fruit is cheap and easier than you think, plus they taste like the real thing... because that's exactly what they are! :) Enjoy!

You are indeed a cool mom. Great for the kids and great for the whole family. Thanks for the tip on the meat slicer. I have one laying around that I haven't used in years, and wasn't planning on it since I stopped eating meat. Now I have a use for it. Yay!!!

An horizontal spiralizer is the tool of choice for my arthritic hands to simultaneously peel, seed and slice apples. The slicer is really an excellent idea for harder things like butternut squash, jicama and beets. Thank you for the tip :-D !!!

How are you liking your dehydrator
@aLittleInsanity
@aLittleInsanity 12 лет назад
Thanks! I've been through several of the vertical dehydrators and found that they dehydrated unevenly, leaked onto the heating element (which did not smell good), broke easily, I couldn't adjust the temperature for Living Foods or remove trays so I could dehydrate larger items (like Kale Chips & Pineapple). The Excalibur Dehydrator solved all of those problems and I L-O-V-E it! I have used regularly for the past 4 years and it is a work horse! =) Hope that helps! =) God Bless! ~ Erika

@novelista14 is correct. Store bought Banana chips are soaked in a sugar solution, and then deep fried in oil to make them crispy. Naturally dehydrated banana slices will crisp up nicely, but not crispy. We've grown to love the chewy banana 'candy' (as we call it) & sometimes dip the banana in coconut & cinnamon before dehydrating for a tasty variation! Just be sure to spritz the bananas with a lemon/water solution before dehydrating to keep them from browning. Hope that helps! God Bless! ~Erika

It has been a while since I have dehydrated any fruit but, I learned that the juice from the pineapple was a great preserving agent to keep my apples and peaches from turning brown. When I used lemon juice and water, I found it was to sour. I hope this helps. PS Love, Love, Love dehydrated pineapple. Sweet as candy.

Hi, do we need to use oil to make it crispy or is that lemon water solution enough to make it crispy? I like it really really crispy so what temperature would I need to set it at? Also, I am purchasing a cheap small dehydrator, would this still work? (would it be crispy?). Thank you! btw your baby is so cute!

Great video! But, even the extra money you spent on the timer model, wouldn't you still have to check the food to make sure you need more drying time? I have the 9 tray Excaliber and I love it, but, I still have to rotate trays for making leathers. Do a video on pear leathers please.

@brettburky Thanks for the comment! Congrats on the new Dehydrator! It is helpful to have even slices, but it may also help if you raise the temp to 115 degrees. Trust me, you will not lose any nutrients since the moisture in the apples will keep the temp low. Plus, you will avoid any bacterial growth that comes from sitting too long. Also, be sure that your heating coils are warming up - they can shift during shipment - check Excalibur's FAQ's for help on this. God Bless! ~ Erika

So please tell me more about the spray you are using. do you use fresh lemon juice? Why do you have so much mixed, does it not go bad easily or did you have a ton things to spray it on that day?
@aLittleInsanity
@aLittleInsanity 12 лет назад
@babythebabyslings I typically use 3 parts water to 1 part pure lemon juice (fresh is always best, but you can also use all natural bottled juice). When I really want to preserve the color (such as apples & bananas), I use a 2 to 1 ratio, or straight juice. Be sure to coat the fruit generously... you will go through more than you think, but if you have any left over, you can store it in the fridge for 2-4 weeks before it goes bad. Thanks & God Bless ~ Erika

You're exactly right! This is especially important if you live in a humid environment. Depending on what you're dehydrating, this can be a valuable tip so the food doesn't spoil. Thanks for the comment! =) God Bless! ~Erika

I hear many different things about what temperature. Does it depend on what kind of Dehydrator you have? I don't own a fancy Excalibur but mine is decent. It does have temperature settings. About to use it.
@aLittleInsanity
@aLittleInsanity 12 лет назад
It depends on how long you store it in the freezer. I've found that freezing works great if you use them right away... otherwise I love dehydrating and then using a food sealer to preserve them longer. The only problem with freezing, is that it only slows down the ripening / rotting process unless you blanch (quick boil) the items first... same with canning - you almost always have to cook the food & then heat up the can to seal it and prevent bacteria growth. Hope that helps! God Bless! ~Erika

Thank you for the upload. I'm wondering what the noise level is on the excalibur models. I'm just wondering if it's worth investing the extra money in the one with the timer so that I can run it while we're at work instead of trying to talk over it all evening or having it running overnight. Is it a loud machine?

Hi Erika ~ Well, I didn't use the electric slicer to slice them - but I'm dehydrating your pineapple rings. I've been dehydrating pineapple for some time, but I've never done rings. Always bits and pieces (to make Ani Phyo's Donut Holes here on RU-vid). Yes, the timing was great, I'm so thankful to know about using the slicer and that I didn't go ahead and sell ours. We enjoy a light sprinkling of cinnamon on the apple slices and then dehydrate. Thanks again! Debbie *Ü*

@david88at Yes, it can take anywhere from 6-24 hours depending on the thickness of your fruit/veggies and how chewy or crispy you want the finished product to be. As an example, when I dehydrate Banana rounds that start off about 1/4" thick - it usually takes about 18 hours for them to dehydrate so they can be packaged without molding in the fridge. Another great RU-vidr on this subject is @dehydrate2store, she has a great collection of dehydration 'how to' videos. Thanks & God Bless! ~Erika

Great Questions! We aren't 100% Raw or Vegan... but different diet preferences / restrictions in ourselves & our children have us eating a primarily Raw & Whole Food Diet with very little meat (if any at all). B12 can be found in Nutritional Yeast, and especially in Spirulina - which our family consumes daily. As for Zinc - there is enough in the veggies & nuts that we eat & Selenium too, as well as in Fish & eggs. Hope that helps! God Bless! ~Erika

Hi Lisa! I think a mandolin would work great! Just be sure to watch those fingers! =) And I also think that vacuum sealing them will make them last much longer. I've frozen fruit leather before, and it keeps great - just be sure to set it out for a little bit so it can soften before eating it. Hope that helps! God Bless! ~Erika

Dehydrating at higher temps (like 185 degrees for beef jerky) would probably have a greater impact on your power. But, I only use mine for 'Living Foods', so the temp rarely goes past 105 - 115 degrees (so the heating element doesn't work as hard. Mine runs often & I've had no noticeable increase in my electric bill. The fan is powerful, and it does make noise, but I keep mine in the kitchen and can easily hold a conversation without it interfering. Hope that helps! =) God Bless! ~Erika

I found my meat slicer at a thrift store for ten bucks. Most of my small appliances come from thrift stores actually. So many people get rid of stuff like that and sometimes it's brand new because it was a gift to someone and it sat in their cupboard until they got rid of it.
@scenethelite
@scenethelite 6 лет назад
Ebba Lytle omg me too! I just found a new dehydrator in its original box with the manuals for $7 for my healthy diet. Glad I'm not the only weirdo who hoards thrift store appliances... but they seriously don't make food appliances like they used to! I found this vintage Baconizer (a bacon toasted oven that separates the drippings and built solid as a rock!) that my grams used to have. Lol. I was like "crap, do I get the unused food dehydrator, the crockpot with lid & liner, or the baconizer?! OMG GETS'EM ALL!!! Lol. We should start a channel on vintage thrift store food appliances & their many uses... came across a rare vintage milk pasteurizer and was like "the things I could do with that!!!" Lol.
@scenethelite
@scenethelite 6 лет назад
Couldn't even find a RU-vid tutorial for this baconizer and was soooo sad. But they used make bacon on weekends for the fam, jerky, meatballs... I swear they always had something going in it and their massive homemade dehydrator! Us kids used to go sneak food out of them while they were cooking, & they'd find a tray or 2 missing when the timer went off. 😂✊🏽

@aLittleInsanity
@aLittleInsanity 12 лет назад
@clockworklilac Our Excalibur Dehydrator sits on the counter in our kitchen and often runs 24/7. The noise is obvious, but not so loud that I can't talk on my phone. It's kind of like having a fan running on low in the background... I don't even notice anymore. I know someone that keeps their dehydrator on a shelf in the garage so they don't have to hear it at all. I love the timer on mine, but you can also set a kitchen timer/alarm to turn it off manually. God Bless! ~ Erika

It's just the standard serrated (meat?) blade that comes with the Chef's Choice Food Slicer Model 610 from Amazon, but I've noticed it's gone up in price... they have a link to a different model (the 609), which is cheaper and looks like it might have the same functions. Hope that helps! =) God Bless! ~Erika

Hi Susan! No, there's no need to freeze or condition your fruit after dehydrating it. I usually use my food sealer to vacuum seal it if it's not going to get eaten right away... Otherwise I just store it in my fridge in a ziplock bag. :) Hope that helps! God Bless! ~Erika
